Default WWI in Color, Powerful

LiveLeak.com - WW1, War in the trenches: colour footage

Powerful statement.

I remember seeing original color photographs from that era online once. Unfortunately I do not remember the link. I wonder if this video clip was colorized, though.

I thought this thread would be about that Dutch site with the pics, Stormy.

I wonder where the color footage comes from. I'm can't help but suspect that at least some of it was re-enacted. You see a lot of early period footage that was reshot after the fighting was over to ensure they had the proper conditions for shooting.

It's great stuff, though. Big Bertha going at it is just amazing, and you can really see the futility of digging out and planking those trenches. Shovelful after shovelful makes no difference whatsoever.

As I recall, most of the footage of men going over the top was staged, for the reasons you give. Even the stormtroopers with the flamethrower probably is, as the camera wouldn't have been that close to the enemy trench most likely.

Tanks came about late in the war and in too small of a quantity to really affect the outcome. Plus, they broke down a lot and commanders didn't know how to use them properly.

A unique war, large advancements in technology without much advancement in strategy. This equaled mass death and destruction on an unprecedented scale.

Sad state.

I think World War 2 makes people forget how terrible World War 1 really was. World War 1 caused everything, and brought us the joys of warplanes, tanks, flamethrowers and weapons of mass destruction (chemical warfare, i.e. gas) amongst other fun inventions.

(Personally, I find WW1 a more interesting subject to study than WW2 - neither side was all good or all evil, and the outcome was in doubt until almost the very end)
