Unson offered to to stoke the kettle, so we're doing personal Bobali pizzas on the grill.

We went to a really, really, really, really, really bad, cheap, lousy Italian buffet.

Homemade chili and tex-mex bread!
If the weather holds out probably grill some chicken with Orange chipotle seasoning.

Tex-Mex bread is a round wheat loaf made with corn kernels, cheddar and jack cheese, with some type of red and jalapeno peppers. Should go great with chili!

When I go back to the store this evening I think I will get some nutella for the baguette.

Re: What's for Dinner?
Peach cobbler I made from the Georgia peaches I got last weekend. I had a late lunch so I think that will probably be it.

Re: What's for Dinner?
Today was BIGASS SALAD day.
Our salad started with boiled eggs and crispy bacon. We then took some of SigOth's bread that had been left over from a previous meal and made fresh croutons with Parmesan and various herbs and spices.
Next we cut up cucumber, red and yellow bell pepper, monterey jack, jicama, and vidalia onion and stacked everything on top of bibb lettuce and radicchio.
We had some strawberries that need to be used up, so I made a strawberry and ginger vinaigrette for our dressing. Finally we topped the whole thing off with some roasted cashews.
Two huge plates of salad and we ate every last bit of it.
Dessert was grilled peaches and vanilla yogurt.

Re: What's for Dinner?
That sounds like the chef's salad my husband makes every so often.
It's too hot, so we went out for tamales and tacos.

Re: What's for Dinner?
We got a big haul from the farmers' market yesterday, so we just ate off that stuff. We always get these giant loaves of rustico bread from a local bakery there--they're round and barely fit into a full sized paper grocery bag and people point and laugh when you buy one--so we eat mostly that plus salads and other vegetables for a couple of days after we go. I had bread and French breakfast radishes and a spring mix salad and a bunch of little sweet peppers. I don't know what anyone else ate other than the bread.
I've been thinking about fish tacos a lot, though, so I might make some of those tonight. Best part: I'm the only one who likes fish tacos, so maybe they can have bread again. Ha ha!

Re: What's for Dinner?
I'm going to make lasagna with zucchini instead of noodles. Yellow wax beans for a side and peach cobbler and ice cream for dessert.

Re: What's for Dinner?
Had too many projects today, so dinner had to be simple and fast. I had a ham and swiss sandwich. And then another. And then one more.
Washed them down with root beer.
ICE COLD ROOT BEER!
There is a god.

Re: What's for Dinner?
Hmmm... It's about time for my Asian Pear, Jicama, and Daikon slaw. I'll have to make a stop at the Super H Mart tomorrow.
Peal and julienne one medium size jicama, one asian pear and one good size chunk of daikon.
Peel and shred one medium size carrot.
Blend together fresh ginger, garlic, rice wine vinegar, chili pepper, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil... The amounts are up to your personal taste.
Toss everything together in a large bowl and serve.
I will sometimes sprinkle the top of the slaw with black sesame seeds just before serving. It makes a striking presentation.

Re: What's for Dinner?
I had a breakthrough with Mrs. Puppet this weekend. A nutritionist absolutely insisted that she start eating fish, but she has gone her whole life hating anything from the sea except for shrimp/prawns. Somehow, I managed to convince her, finally, that all fish is not created equal. So I got her to eat tilapia*, and not only did she not upchuck, she actually liked it. I kept it extremely simple, just squeezing a lot of lemon on it and saute'ing it in olive oil with some garlic and salt.
Next up, besides coming up with more interesting ways to do tilapia, will be to introduce other species. I'm starting with the least pungent fishies and will slowly work my way to stinkier varieties. Problem is, the least stinky fish is usually the most expensive. Tilapia isn't bad, but the next candidates, Chilean sea bass and halibut, are fucking outrageous. After payday we'll give it another go.
*In before "YOU WOULDN'T EAT IT IF YOU KNEW IT WAS CALLED TOOTHFISH." I'm so sick of hearing that shit. Like nobody called it tilapia before the "effetes" got hold of it. Except for a few million brown people, sure.

Re: What's for Dinner?
I need to try something like that with Maturin. He's not a total fusspants or anything, but if I make fish, he really doesn't eat it except for maybe a polite tablespoonful or so. And I really don't like making it just for myself and leaving him to his own devices. That's mean.
If it doesn't get too hot today, I'm going to roast up some beets and fingerling potatoes and anything else I can find that needs roasting, and then figure out some way to make that be dinner.

Re: What's for Dinner?
We will not be having the Asian Pear, Jicama, and Daikon slaw for dinner. I did make a big batch of it, but...
We eated it.
All of it.
Damn it was good.
Wish I knew what I was going to have for dinner tonight.

Re: What's for Dinner?
Ha ha. That stuff does look awesome.
So question: Think it'd work with fish tacos? I'd normally just do a regular cabbage slaw, but that sounds so good, and I'm already thinking about fish tacos really hard. It seems like a shoo-in for the fish, but would it be dissonant with corn tortillas? Like, just the fish and the slaw, with maybe some rooster sauce instead of salsa?

Re: What's for Dinner?
Personally I wouldn't include sweet fruitiness of any kind in tacos (tangy fruitiness from tomato & lemon is fine), but that's just my personal prejudice; a lot of people/restaurants do, so I don't see why not. It's particularly common in Calimexican pseudocuisine. Maybe most wouldn't use Asian pear, but if you like mango salsa &c., it would probably work for you. If anything, I think the aforementioned slaw would be better with corn tortillas than flour.
