City of Heroes: Freedom
BORT! HALP! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK?
City of Heroes Freedom
Quote:
Pay for the content and features that you want. Choose to play for free, or become a VIP player and command VIP service. With City of Heroes Freedom, you don't have to buy the game or pay a monthly fee to play. You can download the game and play for free for as long as you wish. If you upgrade to VIP player status you will unlock a bounty of content and benefits. You can also buy a variety of content and services from a new in-game store.
|
I read through the FAQ and the only thing that I kinda like is being able to pick and pay for specific costume pieces, emotes and stuff from Booster Packs. Though that will probably not help me at all, since I tend to buy the entire Pack.
But for the most part...
I AM PANICKING HERE! BORT!

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
You honestly have no choice in the matter, Mr. yau. You have entirely too many characters that you play (nevermind the actual total number) for you to even consider dropping VIP status.
I am forcing myself to be nice about this. I haven't yet gone to the forum to see what everyone else is saying but I'm pretty sure a goodly number of them are crying DOOM™. Which, I have to say, I'm feeling a bit of. But I think that's just a territorial response. My feeling on it is that I've been here all along, paying my hard earned dolla-dolla bills and then they go and open this floodgate to allow some unwashed masses [back] into the fold.
Then, the reasonable side of my brain suggests hey, this game is 10 years old, something like this was bound to happen. hey, I wonder if that other game I used to play is f2p too? man, I don't want to get up. I think I'll reheat those leftovers around 6 or so.
Um. Oops. That was my stream of (semi)-conscience. F2P hasn't killed Lord of the Rings or Champions, so I guess it's okay. But still, I'm mostly a pessimistic type person so I have to make the effort not to let that dominate when it's just my opinion and not necessarily fact based.

That's pretty much the main complaint right now. I guess it's because I've never really experienced an F2P crowd, but I find the reaction to be kinda elitist. The big problem now is that players want to move ALL of their characters, bases and SGs into the new VIP server. Or make a F2P server and put all the lowlifes on there.
I'm not sure I like that response, I mean, the CoH community prides itself on welcoming new players and helping newbies out and stuff...this reaction seems very different than all that. We welcome you only if you pay?
But, again, I've never experienced the F2P crowd, so maybe it's exactly as bad as they are saying.

I've played Lord of the Rings for a bit and Champions for not as long. I don't recall the crowds in the low zones to be anything more egregious than anything not already encountered in heavy traffic zones of CoH.

You realize, of course, the F2P structure means we can start a FF Super Team for serious this time.

I might be up for that when I get back from vacation. Does the F2P version allow friends lists? That was the tough part when I tried the trial version, it didn't.

Here's a side by side of what's available to whom. Regular F2P accounts will be nearly as limited as trial accounts.
It's still a while away. (As is said on the community "Soon™".) So some of that may change before it's available.

Ahh, so it appears to be basically a trial membership that doesn't expire. That's sorta cool, I guess, and I'll prolly create somebody when it hits.

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
And now WoW's going F2P for the first 20 levels. Some suspect that, in WoW's case, it's a response to RIFT. (There's allegations that ActiVision is trying to figure out how to make WoW more profitable, or even "profitable at all" -- apparently they may have been spending more than they were making recently.)

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
This has caused me to create...
PONY HEROES!
Trying to think of an SG name that will fit in the box, but be as awesome as <Sufficiently Advanced Technology is Indistinguishable from Friendship>.
We have:
Pinkie Pyro (fire/kin troller)
Roarity (sonic/sonic defender)
Shudderfly (ill/emp troller, with a fear theme)
Applesmack (inv/ss tanker)
Twilight Glitter (dark/dark defender)
Rainbow Bash (ma/wp scrapper)
Got some work to do with standardizing the costumes a bit (making them all the same, small, height), and then I have to go recruiting players or something to allow all the ponies to play together.
Costumes to be posted when I have time and screencaps.

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Okay! Here's the five that I did. I'm guessing everyone can guess which they are without captions. Sadly, my screencappery failed and I don't have their bios.
Shudderfly: "TREMBLE AND DESPAIR BEFORE MY WRATH if that's okay with you, I don't want to be a bother."
Pinkie Pyro has about a kilobyte of something about how she'd like to give people cupcakes but for now is using force.
Roarity: "Criminals? In Paragon City? Such a crime against fabulosity must not go uncorrected!"
Twilight Glitter has something about how she'd rather be reading, but she's here with her friends, and anyway she's been reading a book about learning by doing.

They are nice...but...I think Pinkie should be wearing brighter clothing. But the rest are very good. Like the pink sneakers.

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Pinkie's clothing was based on the thing where she was going around dancing in a top hat and tux. I could go to something different and see whether it works. The wedding tux woulda been great, but it conflicted with the tail.
Thing with Pinkie is that it's hard to get something sufficiently pinkie-like; the canonical example in the show was her wearing a wrapped gift box and swimmy fins, but neither of those are available. I will kick at it.
BTW, they all have auras when they're in combat.

BTW, yes, I'll be adding the little cupid wings to Shudderfly when I get a chance.
Currently working on The Caryatid Crusader. You know those stone columns that look like women? In D&D, they're a kind of golem that attack intruders. Backstory is, one of those was created, then the top secret lab ended up being sold off in a bankruptcy sale, and someone put the statue up in Atlas Park. Whereupon a Hellion mugging triggered it. It is now attempting to purge Paragon City of unwelcome intruders, after which it will return to its pedestal and look inconspicuous.

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
That launch was a spectacular clusterfuck. Seriously, I am in awe.
That said, it's basically running now, only one obvious major failure left. (You can't scroll the list of servers, so they have it randomizing the order so you can see your server eventually).
Market's still flawed, in that you can still try to buy things you already have. But! It does work. And there's a real backpack option. And there's TONS OF OMG AWESOME.
Also, Staff Melee will be in the game in the future, people found the power icons and stuff for it. Looks awesome. I have my name-reservation ("Rotary Club") already.

Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
GIVE US US FREE! Freedom is upon us all, and woe be upon any cut purse or dime store Doctor Doom threaten the city! (Or, sorrow befall any mask who dares threaten the chaos of the Isles!)
Street Justice is upon us all, and by great fortune it's the 7 year anniversary of Tanker Tuesday. I've only recently gotten into Tankers so I haven't attended events for that long. But in honor of this auspicious day, I give you the Riveteer:
Can we take our city back from the criminal element?
YES WE CAN!

Ooh, StJ's out? I gotta reroll Aunt Millie, who's currently inv/db, as inv/stj. She's putting the AUNT back into TAUNT AURA.
