It was at JREF, a couple years ago, shortly before they got banned. Someone always eventually replies. It is a law of nature. :D

It will not die. He's infesting other threads now but we're replying there, and that seems to be keeping him away from the actual content, more or less.

It's not containing him, though, and I believe that is intentional on his part. A genuine community effort to ignore him is at least worth a shot, I think.

Then throw it out the window. Or it's only going to get worse. Some people are just assholes and shouldn't be allowed to post.

It won't work. He's already poisoning threads that have nothing to do with him and get no replies, and it's not getting better. He'll continue escalating until he ruins this board, replies or not, and the longer we wait the more you'll have to violate your hands-off nonmoderation to get rid of him.

Let him freak out. When replies dry up, he will get bored. It may take awhile, but he will find his next board to troll.

By then everyone else will be bored of this place too. "Let him pee on us" is not a viable answer.

We'll see. I don't see why a longer wait will entail more violations of our current policies, and since we as a board have yet to deploy all those ignore features we built into the forum, I have no reason to assume your pessimism is justified.

Why? We know his modus operandi, so we know this will not work. Let's do something that will.

Imagine a random web-lurker coming along and browsing threads here, fnding them full of porn, insults, spam and worse -- all of which nobody seems to see but him. Imagine the flame trail left as he backpedals away with great gusto.

Ignore features are great for unresolvable disagreements, but this jerks's a forumwide disaster.

I'm don't have him on ignore. I've read some of his posts. And yet, I do not feel that my experience in this forum has been ruined or harmed in any significant way. I don't expect that to change no matter how often he posts or how many of his posts I read.

I think that the forum community is doing just fine with or without him. I don't see a need to change the forum philosophy with regards to moderation.

Having seen him kill at least two threads already, I'm going to have to disagree on this one.

I know if I was starved for attention I'd hang out at a forum where my thread in the Philosophy forum was the second most popular thread in there. Where every little nonsensical peep I make garners a handful of enthustiastic responses. Where whole threads are devoted to discussing me.

If anyone would rather stop coming to the FF than click "Ignore this user" on someone they find offensive or obnoxious, then I really don't know what to say to that. But we're not about to implement moderation or start agreeing to ban people because of one or two irritating posters. I think history is crystal clear on where forums that adopt that administration strategy end up.

Perhaps. I do not think it is worth it. How long will it take before he gets bored? Days? Weeks? Months? During which he'll be spewing unmoderated vitrol all over the place at an increasing pace. And even then he might come back habitually because gee, golly, he can still post -- we're not banning him! What suckers for punishment we are. It's not worth it. Ban him now.

Well I understand your point corona688, but I think you are jumping the gun here. None of us can predict his reaction. Go ahead and do what you like though, it certainly will be a true test of the "system" because not all users will ever take the same action even against such an obvious troll.

You're speaking to one. He'd still be spewing offal and ruining threads left and right even if I had him on ignore; there's no point in ignoring him unless we can get ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE to ignore him, including nonregistered lurkers.

Do you suppose we could make him 'invisible'? Make a special group you have to opt-in to see any of his posts. And I don't mean this "ignore" where you still see placeholders for every message, I mean really invisible.

Well, I've just encountered him in one of my threads and, as yet, he has troubled me not one whit :). There's no intelligence, wit or interest in the things he says so there's no reason to pay them any mind. Random insults from a person who doesn't know me don't bother me at all.

If he is ignored, he can't harm or kill threads. That's the point. I don't want to ban people, that makes them a martyr.

Thank you for making my point for me. You've just admitted ignoring him will not work.

Irrelevant, since we're talking about stuff that actually happened here, not stuff that never will. Unregistered lurkers in particular, though not exactly posters, do not have the ability to ignore him.

I disagree. Even if we ignore him, he is still making a mess, a mess fully visible to anyone who doesn't have ignore features, i.e. lurkers. Imagine how awful he could make this place if we ignored him let him run unchallenged.
