House chimp freaks, mauls
Surprisingly tragic and terrifying chimpanzee story
There's a lot of weird stuff in here, but this is probably the weirdest for me:
Quote:
Travis had been in an agitated state most of the day Monday, and at one point his owner took the unusual step of giving him tea laced with Xanax in an attempt to calm him down, Capt. Conklin said.

Re: House chimp freaks, mauls
Chimp was 200lbs? I always picture them as smaller animals like 40lbs

Ya rly, me too. There's a pic @ the article, the thing is massive. I wonder if you have to have any permits to keep a chimp in the house, esp. in the city.

Re: House chimp freaks, mauls
They stop acting once they reach maturity because they're too unmanageable. That's why the ones in movies look wee and cute.

Moral of the story- 200lb chimps don't make good pets.

Secondary moral - If you're going to kill an enraged 200lb chimp, you'd better bring more than a butcher knife and a shovel.

Third moral- If you're going to have a 200lb chimp as a pet, you might not want to be a 70 year old little lady.

Ms. Herold called 911, grabbed a knife and stabbed Travis several times, to little avail. When emergency service vehicles pulled up, Travis fled, leaving Ms. Nash face down in the driveway.

So it's not even like he took one swing and she was down for the count. Grandma called 911 and the chimp didn't back off until the paramedics got there. That's a long time to sit there and fuck someone's face up.

Re: House chimp freaks, mauls
I wonder if female chimps are more manageable? IIRC, male chimps are significantly more aggressive and violent.
A bonobo would probably also make a better pet. You'd have to worry about it humping people tho...

Re: House chimp freaks, mauls
Just a reminder that animals, as much as we might try to make them human, are still animals. I'm not sure that inside a house would be the proper living arrangement for a full grown chimp.

And it wasn't even his chimp that did that to him. What a sad story.
