Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
So, if I were a UKer type person, going on holiday within the UK, what travel website might I use to check out things and such?
I know what to do here at home. I know what I did do back in the olden days of 11 years ago...none of that is today though. Hit me with your best travel sites, please.
And sorry to dash your hopes, but I am not coming. I am planning the trip for other people in my immediate family that are not me.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
To check out places you've identified - tripadvisor isn't bad.
To find places - I Google chaoticly
Will you need to find travel routes? TfL.gov.uk for London, and Citymapper. National rail enquiries for trains.

Tripadvisor? That's one of my sites anyway. Ok cool I am doing ok then. I thought you might have a secret special one.
They'll have Britrail passes so places with train stations are important.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
Make sure to use tripadvisor .co.uk and use IP spoofing to appear to be within the UK, otherwise it will serve you the iggnerant Amuricun version. Joking. I think.
I am less convinced by booking.com, hotels.com, expedia and trivago. But often more useful are the local sites some areas put up - Hotel - Edinburgh & The Lothians | VisitScotland, Stay in Bath | Quality Independent Accommodation | Hotels, B&Bs, Guest Houses In Bath, Cambridge Hotels, Things to Do, Events - Official Cambridge Tourist Information, etc, etc. Just Google chaoticly.
Travel -
Home - Transport for London
National Rail Enquiries - Official source for UK train times and timetables
Avoid thetrainline.com, they just take a fee which they pump into advertising.
Watch out for engineering works at the weekends and on bank holidays - there is always something closed somewhere. And keep an eye out for strike action, there have been quite a few recently : (some get called off but some have gone through).
Are you helping them to decide which regions to visit? If so, the best website for that is Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
We are pretty good on the major overall touring plan aspect . The problem I am having is accommodations that are accessible from the train station. I don't how I did it in the long ago, as there was much less web info than today and I had to actually email furriners (imagine!). Looks like I may need to communicate with humans once again as you don't have Comfort Inns on every corner as I am used to.

There should be Premier Inns on pretty much every corner.
Edit: Or maybe Travelodge, yeah I was thinking of Travelodge.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
I will ponder your more specialised requirements. There must be plenty of people with such plans so I'd expect something.
There are Holiday Inns and Travelodges all over Britain ... often close to stations, airports, and major motorway junctions. Might be worth looking at their sites.

"The Travel Planner" sounds like a rom com.
They thought they were going to get comfortable, reasonably priced rooms conveniently close to railway stations. The British tourism industry, not to mention the British weather, had other plans! Based on the bestselling post by LadyShea, this is the holiday romance you'll be talking about until the next one! Premières at Platform 2, Blaenau Ffestiniog Station.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
Travelodge is very basic - just a room but you have to make your own arrangements for breakfast.
Premiere Inn is a bit nicer and always next to some pub/eatery where you also get breakfast. At last they now have free WiFi - used to be an extra. They are clean and comfortable but a bit boring - they are all exactly the same as each other.
Bed and Breakfast places are much more variable - but cheaper and more interesting if you're prepared to take a bit of a risk. Some B&B places are fantastic but it's difficult to find them - if you're touring then pot luck is about the best option - or play safe and go for the Premiere Inns (but there aren't very many in rural Wales).

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
B & B worked well when I went, I even emailed a cute one today, and this trip will be a mix. In London they can stay at Comfort Inn, which is free for us is why I use them.

Re: Hello UK Peoples Who Holiday
I had good luck with Holiday Inn Express in Edinburgh and Manchester. If you have a membership with their reward system you get automatic late checkout for free, which is nice. For Brighton we went with a B&B that I think was listed as a boutique hotel. Honestly don't remember how I found that. I'm pretty sure it was chaotic googling, though.

I know what I did when I visited in 1980....I flew in to Heathrow and immediately trained out to Cambridge, where I disembarked the train and went immediately to the Tourist Information booth just outside the station. There, they booked me in to a nearby B&B (nearby being one of my parameters). It worked so well that I repeated it throughout England, Scotland and Ireland. England and Scotland had well marked Tourist Information booths/windows (with the big red lower case i) and the biggest problem I had was that some B&B beds were too soft (aka broken down mattresses). It was really great, I got a couple bum steers, but mostly it was just fine.
When I returned in 1996, my wife introduced me to hostelling...Hostelling International, actually. With that, we saved $$ until we needed upgraded amenities (like a private bath with a decent shower), when we'd do a B&B or modest hotel. The Tourist Information offices were still present and active then.
So...Are all the Tourist Information offices gone?
