Chateau JoeP has been visited by the Fox of Ultimate Naughtiness.

I was working at my desk (OK, pretending to) when I heard some loud and insistent growl-hissing from the cats. The back door was open because hot and humid, and my first thought was the very chilled cat next door had come in. But no, it was :fox:. The cats were doing their growling and extreme fluffing up on the landing and the fox was, at the time I first saw it, in the bath. I offered to give it a wash but it ran upstairs. I shut the cats away and managed to shoo the fox out of the top bedroom whereupon it scampered down the stairs out of the back door out of the back garden and for all I know into the next county (which is about 500yds away).

Before the confrontation it had eaten what was left of the cats' dry food, and some wrapping paper which I didn't know I had, and taken some of the cat's toys out into the garden.

After the confrontation, the door is closed and I am considering screens.

Seagull carries away dog from garden in Devon | World news | The Guardian

Quote:
A dog owner has asked for help to be reunited with her miniature chihuahua after a seagull took it from a garden in Devon.

Becca Hill, 24, from Paignton, has appealed for information about four-year-old Gizmo, who was carried away on Sunday afternoon.
This is some kind of horror film stuff here.

I hate having sick animals. Skywalker is sick, and we're not sure exactly what's wrong. She's drinking some water, but hasn't eaten in 2 days. She's been to the vet, and the doctor has ruled out intestinal blockage, so we're treating her for gastroenteritis and/or colitis (the next most likely issue), so we are hoping to see some improvement today. (The picture is from last year.)

Our younger cat had an intestinal blockage which the vet didn't see at first: a shoelace (yummy! I must eat that!) caught at the stomach and trailing into the intestine. In fact, if I recall correctly, they didn't make out anything on the X-ray and only discovered it through laparoscopy (and removed it at the same time).

She's more prone to eat plastic and foam, which should show up in imaging, so we're still betting on an infection. Mrs. Reasons happens to be home today, so it was up to her to decide how she wants to handle it.

So after almost 5 days of nothing but water, she actually ate something this morning. Not much, but something. So, she's getting better, but not anywhere near normal.

At this point he's still pretty chill, but I think in about a week when most of the pain is gone, we're going to have a lot of trouble keeping him from overdoing it on his healing leg.

This is actually the first time I've considered getting health insurance for the dogs - this was pricey.
This one. He's a pretty smart dog, but sometimes...

This weekend he tried to leap over a concrete planter, failed, knocked it over and hurt his previously injured leg. The wail of pain was heartrending, and he wouldn't use it for a day.

We iced it for the rest of the day. He's walking on it now, and it's still tender but weight bearing. We think the hit he took was more painful and confusing than injurious.

I have no idea why it took us several weeks to figure out our dog had fleas. Probably because the dog that showed the first symptoms was the one who's prone to rashes and hot spots.

But now it's pretty clear both dogs have it, and probably the cats, too.

Now we're 2 flea baths in and collars on all the furry animals.

There are a couple-few different medications that will keep the fleas away much more reliably than a collar. They're not cheap, but some last 3 months, so you only need to dose them 4x a year. Our pug hasn't shown any side effects from them, and as long as I remember it in time, zero fleas/ticks. I let it lapse once and she actually managed to get a tick - probably from the local rat/squirrel/raccoon population getting into our back yard. Had to have the vet remove it, which was more expensive than the meds.
