Literal meanings of places in the U.S [MAP]. - Slate Magazine

Fun as hell but grain of salt. Just at a glance I can see that they are really reaching on some of these. Also what's with "Land" everywhere? Nevada just means snowy. It's an adjective. You don't have to say Land all over the place, it makes it look too busy. Also I think Colorado means colored. Okay, the thing is a piece of shit and I regret posting it! No but seriously, it's cool.

Okay, help me figure this one out.

Mexico = Navel of the Moon
California = Land of the Successor
Mexicali = Mexico & California

That would be fine, except...

Texas = Land of Friends
Arkansas = Land of the South Wind People
Texarkana = Town of Friends and South Wind People

How about a little consistency, eh?

Finally (I promise), using The Messengers instead of The Angels for Los Angeles is a little bit too literal for me.

Land of Those Who Speak Normally (where lies the great city of Stink Onions) is pretty awesome, I'll admit :giggle:

So, North of Flint (which is still Flint, boooring) is Place of those at the Outlet. I suspect it's probably supposed to be Saginaw but since there is an outlet mall just North of Flint in Birch Run, I've decided it must be there instead.

Colorado does literally mean colored as might be guessed by the resemblance, but it also can mean red specifically. The name originates from the Colorado River which got its name from it or some tributary/nearby river having reddish water, so it does make sense to use "reddish" on that map.

Nova Scotia being "New Land of Darkness" is fun, but the ultimate origin of the term Scot in Scotland is unknown and just means Irish person (the Scottish Celts came from Ireland after the Romans withdrew).

Some of the "lands" do make sense, since endings like Virginia, Carolina and Georgia do basically mean that.

Also, it's good that they're not calling this "true meanings" since I'd say that the true meaning of New York is simply that. At the time it was named, York simply meant the place in England. While when York was named, it did probably refer to yew trees (there's some controversy about it's etymology). The meaning intended by the namers is what the "true meaning" is, I'd think, even if that meaning is lost later as it was with York and many of the Native American names in the US.

I do find it interesting how little we think about the meanings of place names. I had been in Southern California for a couple years before the holly bushes outside Pitzer suddenly make it click in my mind that Hollywood meant a forest of holly trees.

Hollywood is neither holly nor wooded. Discuss.

Pennsylvania, means Penn's woods, because the state was forested from one end to the other when ceded to William Penn. There is still a lot of woodland in the state and I own 2 acres that are all trees except for the drive and the house. My builder wanted to bring in topsoil and plant grass, and I asked him if he was going to mow it because I would not. That ended that.

Hahaha. Today, I got mad, like actually legit mad, that apparently some people think Colorado is "midwest." But that's because I pretty much define the midwest as the boring states I don't care about, including Idaho.

I would recomend looking at the US Geological Survey Maps, the 7.5 degree series are very detailed, individual rural buildings are indicated but in urban areas it usually just indicates a built up area with only major buildings indicated.

Whodafuq could call Texas "Midwest"?

Also, for boring: most of the eastern half of Colorado, it's just like Kansas only with less people, less crops, more cows.

When speaking English I suppose. Although we also have pretty silly accents when speaking German or even Dutch.
