Re: First World Problems
I've bought 3 desktops over the last 5-6 years, and only one of them came with a (very cheap) wifi card installed. That one was an HP though, so I guess they do that.

Mine too. It was some kind of "media center" build with a big hard drive and a remote that looked like a TV remote with a windows button on it. I posted about it on here in 2008, remember? Cuz the first one they sent me was a refurb I bought on Woot and it was defective and HP replaced it with a brand new one but they were out of my model so they upgraded it.
Anyway both of them had wifi cards.
I still have it, I schlepped it all the way here and after the move it won't boot up anymore. I was so going to wipe it and build a shiny new media server on Debian or something, but it's borked so it's just taking up room on the dining room floor.
The big monitor is still good though and it's hooked up to the boxee in the bedroom. It has internal speakers but the volume can't be adjusted by remote. We didn't bring the old big TV with us so the old little bedroom TV is in the living room. Between the two of them there are only 3 HDMI inputs, which is like less than half we need for our devices. Most of those devices have wifi, too.
These are the first world problems, folks.

Re: First World Problems
Big hard drive? Mine has two, one 250GB and the other a 320GB, and both of them are full.
First world problem? My new DVR has 2TB, and nothing on it yet.

I haven't had a desktop in like 6 years, so have been spoiled by laptops and tablets and phones.

Re: First World Problems
I tried to buy my kid a new laptop for her birthday, but the 17.3" touchscreen was too big, so was the 15.6". The 10.1" tablet was too small and so was the 11.6" 2-in-1 laptop.
She did fancy the 13" touchscreen laptop. Which happens to be the most expensive. Kids.
I should buy her a desktop with a fancy internal 56.6k modem and make her huff that to class. I remember on a project at work, we had to dial in to remote computers and chisel stuff on their rock hard drives. The group leader couldn't get IT to upgrade our modems so he bought some at the store and we put them in ourselves. The jump from 9.6 to 28.8k saved the project $4000/month in long distance phone charges.
I had a laptop back then. More of a large brick with a small screen. Top of the line Pentium 1 processor with 128 meg of RAM and a 20 GB HD though.

Re: First World Problems
Has someone been hogging your wifi when visiting you? Are such people going to be allowed to know the new password?
And
what did you end up naming it?

Re: First World Problems
This oe is theoretically faster, though I doubt it will make much difference out here in the sticks. The problem was I was paying double, as my old one came with a dongle I never used (and I checked - won't work on my little laptop that is on the brink of nervous breakdown).
So I retired TheSignal and am now serviced by Secret_Lair.

Re: First World Problems
I used to always have a comprehensive naming scheme where I'd name the network and the devices along a single common theme. So prior to this one, our wifi was The Gabors, but there are only three Gabor sisters, and I changed Zsa Zsa because I can't have a computer AND a dog both named that and I thought about adding names of various Gabor husbands, but don't want devices named after those dorks plus I hate Zsa Zsa's current husband, so I started naming other devices after cryptozoological animals like my Chumbys are El Chupacabra and the Jersey Devil. Then I changed the wifi to Monster Island, which are totally different kinds of monsters, so nothing makes sense, and it's probably doing a real number on our feng shui or something.
So this is my first world problem too. I need to sit down and figure this all out once and for all.
GOD, MIISA, THANKS FOR REMINDING ME.

Re: First World Problems
At home I'm awash in NetgearXXX and LinksysXXX names. Several last names and an address. Nothing fun. Mine is different but not special.
Maybe I should change it to PollyAnnasPornShop and track the increase in the number of pings.

Re: First World Problems
Everybody in my hood has 2WIREXXX, including me, I guess because we're all on the same provider and never bothered to change it after getting it set up. It's fun when I have people over because they're like "what's the wifi?" and I say "It's 2 wire something" and that is no help at all!

Re: First World Problems
Mine are named after the planets, so I have Mercury and Venus, but the one time I had a third one I had to endure the stress of deciding whether to name it Earth or Mars.
Earth seemed wrong because we're on Earth so we don't need to connect with it, but Mars seemed wrong because it's the fourth planet not the third one.
I saw the suggestion that you should name your SSID something like PiracyDetectives or VirusTestingLab to put off any potential freeloaders - but I don't think that would work very well.

George Sanders is not a dork! You take that back, Pea.
So, my first world problem is that I don't have anyone to fight with over Geraldine McEwen being the best Miss Marple ever. Because she totally is and I'd like to explain why to someone at length, but no one will fight with me about it.

So you ended up naming the 3rd one Pluto and that's why it's gone now?

The first rule of fighting is picking something people can fight or at least mildly disagree over.

Someone at work keeps drinking all the coffee without making a fresh pot. Forcing me to make coffee 3 times this morning and hold my cup under the maker to speed up getting my fix.
I'll eventually catch the culprit.

The microwave who cried wolf
Our microwave dings FIVE FUCKING TIMES when it's done cooking or timering. FIVE!
Microwaves are supposed to ding three times. No more, no less. Five dings is an amount of dings for an EMERGENCY, not for telling you a burrito is heated up or whatever.
