Apologies for the length of this. It's an hour long documentary about one of the collateral benefits of the EU—the peace in Ireland. It's of interest to those who are struggling to understand why the actual land border between the UK and the Irish Republic is and isn't there, why that matters, and why Theresa May's Brexit is fucking it up completely.

And Paddy Kielty makes it so real.

An hour, you say. Surely there has to be an easier way to resolve this.

Yes, in a nutshell the Brexit proposition is: no border between Northern Ireland and the Republic (because peace); no border between Northern Ireland and Britain (because United Kingdom and Theresa May requires the DUP support); hard border between "Europe" and "the UK". The solution to this set of simultaneous equations does not exist in the plane of reality.

Not a real conservative: if it was worthwhile, private enterprise would already be busy reclaiming reusable rubbish and selling it.

That only happens at scale in poor countries and (while Britain is apparently trying to become one) we're trying to exclude the kind of poor people who know how to do this.

Both Britain and the US have somehow forgotten that this whole colonialism thing only works if you do it to *other* countries.

Brexit in the Caribbean - Beaches and borders - The Economist

Quote:
The islanders say they rely heavily on the European Union and on nearby islands owned by France and the Netherlands. Anguilla’s airport does not have a runway long enough for big jets, which makes it dependent on the French and Dutch halves of neighbouring St Martin. Although tourism makes up a big chunk of Anguilla’s economy, nearly all visitors must first fly to the Dutch half of the island and then travel overland through the French half before catching a ferry for the last leg. Letters and parcels take the same route. Meanwhile, Anguillan patients pop back and forth to receive specialist treatment not available at home. And in 2016 a third of the island’s capital budget came from the EU’s development fund.

I thought the "Hold my beer, I've got this" attitude was uniquely American, but in following (though loosely) Brexit I've come to the conclusion that it seems to be universal.

To be fair, the source on this is wingnut conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, so take it with a boulder of salt, but LOLOLOL if true.
