Am slightly disappoint : no folk metal no Viking metal no pirate metal? And really, no industrial?

Just one foray into double adjectived metal (melodic death metal)? ... there are so many more!

I thought it was light on the melodic/stoner/desert metal as well, and along with the aforementioned Viking/pirate etc. metal they either totally missed crossover, drone, noise, djent and post metal or conflated each with some other subgenre.

Still, the ability to capture the essence of each idiom they did cover, in less than 5 minutes, was pretty amazeballs, imho.

I've seen that map many times before (and listened to at least 0.01% of however many Finnish metal bands that is).

But I hadn't noticed the source was Encyclopaedia Metallum ... so let's have a search ...

Kosovo is still Not/Available in their list; outrageous.

Finland now has ... 3,952 metal bands. And a population of 5,525,487, making it about 715 bands per 1m people.

It's cumulative (includes inactive bands) so the total number isn't going to go down. And the population isn't increasing much, which would be the only way the ration could go down.

There's no search filter for "active" (and what would that mean? Most recent release? Most recent tour?) but you can filter on genre.
