I guess the relevance is that Betrayal at Krondor is widely regarded as a very good game.

The book however, read like a computer game and therefore sucked the big one. He really should have left it alone.

Re: best video game you've played?
This thread is ancient, but I feel that it cannot continue to exist without me mentioning a couple things.
- The FUCKING METAL GEAR SOLID SERIES.
Holy shit, how did I not get on this boat YEARS ago? This is right up there with the best shit ever made. All 4 of them. For some reason when the first one came out like 10 years ago or someshit, I saw five seconds of gameplay and was like "meh."
So I never played any of them, until last year. I'd have never done it at all if MGS4 hadn't come with my PS3. A friend of mine was like "dude, before you sell it at least try it." ...yeah, I ain't selling it. I immediately got every other entry in the series and have played them all at least 3-4 times.
- Rock Band 2
Guitar Hero is Dead; Long Live Rock Band. This pretty much improved on the music game in every conceivable way, and there are over 1,000 songs you can get for it now. That shit's just mind-numbing and awesome at the same time. I've probably already played this more than any other game ever, and I've only had a copy of my own since August.

Mass Effect.
Awesome storyline, almost totally non liniear, well developed characters and a great variety of classes. The gameplay can be a bit trying until you get used to it, but when you do, if you have a good class pick, you can dominate.

you're making me feel really old...
But elite.. god I wish they'd make a remake, but we still have the battlecruiser games I guess.

I don't know about the rest of the world but they're not making Rock Band discs any more in Australia. Sucks because I picked up the band kit for $48 after X-mas. I did get the last copy of Rock Band AC/DC at a local K-Mart and a second hand copy of a different disc but that's all I can find.
I played the first MGS years ago on PS and loved it. I need to reacquaint myself with it's brilliance.
I have been playing Medieval II lately. I'd just to officially announce that I hate the French, the Danish and the Pope.

I'm surprised they aren't more popular. They combine awesome strategy with awesome war.
Just getting back to Stormy's post, HL2 rocks but I finished AoM way too quickly.

War games are a hard sell. Usually a pure RTS does better. Those work better for the little kiddies that know how to manipulate .. things for lack of a better description. Total War games require some knowledge of strategy and tactics to be even remotely successful. Most works for us Grognards.

Errrr. Even RB2?? That's freaking bizarre. It's still EVERYWHERE here.
RB1 has pretty much gone out of production, but the used game shops should be filled with them - the only purpose of this disc nowadays is to import the songs into RB2 and sell off the disc again.

I only have Shogun and Rome, but I always thought that the strategic part of the game was boring and shallow compared to the tactical portion.

Re: best video game you've played?
I answered this when the thread was a babby, but I'd like to add Bioshock now. It may be the first console game I've ever played start to finish three times in a row. I haven't bought Bioshock 2 yet because I'm afraid I'll have to quit my job and school to play it.

Re: best video game you've played?
Would you believe I've got that game on my iPhone now? I've even played a couple levels (but I don't like the on-screen controls).

Re: best video game you've played?
I can't imagine playing it with onscreen controls. You need the feel of the space bar (was it?) when you shoot stuff.

Re: best video game you've played?
I usually re-mapped FPS games so the right Ctrl key was the fire button. Easier to hit with my thumb when using the arrow keys for movement.

Yep, all over red rover. Apparently Band Hero won in Australia so Rock Band packed up and went home.
Adam, I use the strategic part of Total War a lot. I have spies, princesses, diplomats and priests all over the place working for me. One diplomat in the right place can bribe an army and forestall an attack.

Just noticed this, and ...wow. Band Hero is fucking terrible, I can't believe it actually dominated the market there (or anywhere, for that matter), especially to the point that you can't even FIND RB games. Tried Amazon UK maybe? They sell PAL discs, unless you guys have your own region and can't use UK stuff...

Re: best video game you've played?
I don't even know what we use any more. The PS2 can play both PAL and NTSC and my computer doesn't care.

Re: best video game you've played?
SPANKY'S QUEST
Quote:
Spanky's Quest is a game, published in 1991 by Natsume, for the Super Nintendo. The main character is a monkey named Spanky who attacks by throwing different kinds of balls.
The game begins with a cutscene where a witch traps Spanky. Spanky attacks by throwing a small purple bubble. He can then bounce the bubble on his head. Every time he bounces the bubble, the bubble grows and changes color. The bubble can then be popped, depending the bubble's size and color, different types of sports balls will fly out of the bubble destroying enemies touched by the balls. For example, a purple bubble will release a baseball and the larges orange bubble will release several basketballs. If an enemy is touched by a bubble, he will simply be stunned and unable to move for a moment.
The enemies in the game are all different types of fruits mostly. The soundtrack is characterized by an upbeat jazz-like style of music with creative bass patterns.
