Default Cassini: The Grand Finale

Today, the Cassini plunges into Saturn and its watch is ended.

Follow the action here: Cassini: The Grand Finale: Where is Cassini Now?

As I write, 157,000km from Saturn, 3h11m to end of mission.

20 years. And it will take 83 minutes for the final transmissions to reach us.

Also: Nasa's Cassini spacecraft poised to begin mission-ending dive into Saturn | Science | The Guardian

Quote:
For its swansong, the spacecraft will gather data on Saturn’s clouds as it hurtles towards them at 112,000 km/h. At that speed, even in the wispy vapours 1,500km above Saturn’s cloud tops, Cassini’s thrusters will struggle to keep its antenna pointed towards Earth. When they can no longer hold the spacecraft steady, it will start to tumble, communication will be lost, and the probe will burn to a cinder.

Less than 50,000 miles. Less than 2 hours.

This page Cassini: The Grand Finale: End of Mission Timeline has a cute artistic video of what the burnout will be like.

Final Signal Sent from Saturn

But it will still be 83 minutes before we get it and confirm the time.

Giovanni died on the 14th of September, his namesake on the 15th.

I missed it. Was there an explosion animation or something?

Kind of ... here:

But the final orbit and descent wasn't imaged and transmitted later, for obvious reasons, it was live streamed ... err ... communicated in real time ... at a massive 23 Kb/s or something.

It'll take them days or more to analyse all the final readings and tell us what happened up to the point Cassini could no longer keep its antenna pointed at Earth and started to tumble.

After that, no one knows what happened to it. Saturnian gas jellyfish might have sent up a vehicle of their own to capture it, once they were sure we weren't watching.

It's just that I was watching the countdown with the animated model and then went back to bed. I thought they might have played an animation of it breaking up and everything when it was supposed to happen, although probably not.

Of course there's a video of the live coverage. They even have a 360° video from Mission Control on their channel.
