Not that any of this is likely to surprise anyone who's read this thread, but:

All of the Creepy Things Facebook Knows About You

For what it’s worth, I’m pretty certain I’ve made all of one post on Facebook this year, which was to thank people for birthday wishes. Apart from that I’ve only even logged in on about three other occasions.

The linked About Facebook Adverts is informative. And of course, makes it all sound perfectly normal and non-creepy, and mentions settings you can make inside Facebook but doesn't mention deleting cookies and using ad blockers and Privacy Badger.

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (Epic), says that by going back on its agreement to keep WhatsApp data private, Facebook is violating an agreement reached with the FTC in 2012.

The agency’s final order requires the social network to obtain its users consent before changing settings that affect the privacy of their information. “The FTC has to act,” Rotenberg says. “It’s absurd that a company can disregard a legal judgement.”

well yes that invasion of privacy being specifically what whatsapp was founded to prevent what the fuck

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened (google) but is absolutely the fastest I've seen a tech business literally sell their principles to the highest bidder...

They should be able to shell people who intentionally fuck people over by the million. Frogmarch them out of their homes and make them watch it burn.

Did people really believe that a company whos entire business model is collecting personal data to sell to advertisers wouldn't eventually do the same with anything they bought, I'm kinda surprised it's taken this long.

Mark Zuckerberg accused of abusing power after row over 'napalm girl' photo | Technology | The Guardian

Quote:
Norway’s largest newspaper has published a front-page open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, lambasting the company’s decision to censor a historic photograph of the Vietnam war and calling on Zuckerberg to recognize and live up to his role as “the world’s most powerful editor”.

Espen Egil Hansen, the editor-in-chief and CEO of Aftenposten, accused Zuckerberg of thoughtlessly “abusing your power” over the social media site that has become a lynchpin of the distribution of news and information around the world, writing, “I am upset, disappointed – well, in fact even afraid – of what you are about to do to a mainstay of our democratic society.”

Rumors of Mark Zuckerberg’s death may have been greatly exaggerated – but by his own billion-plus user website, as a glitch on Friday afternoon led Facebook to declare two million users, including Zuckerberg himself, prematurely dead.

People logging in to their accounts to find that they had been “memorialized”, with a message saying (in Zuckerberg’s case): “We hope people who love Mark will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life.”

Facebook failed to remove sexualised images of children - BBC News

The story isn't really that facebook has a loose set of morals when it comes to censorship, it's that they are apparently complete assholes, asking the BBC for examples of sexualized children on their platform, and then reported the BBC to the police for sending them images of children of an explicit nature, images hosted on their site, which they deemed acceptable.

Well, that's disgusting. If Facebook cooperates with the Pakistani government, there should be a user and advertiser boycott of the platform. Blasphemy is a nonsense crime since all religion is complete and utter horse shit shoved at people by charlatans with an agenda.

The second thought I had is that this technology, if ever successfully developed could help sufferers of ALS or locked in syndrome communicate with the rest of the world. Seriously, having either of those conditions is utterly terrifying as you're essentially trapped in your failing body with no way to communicate with others. This technology could provide those sufferers with an outlet to communicate with others.

Lastly, the prospect of Facebook being in control of such technology makes me deeply uneasy. They have a casual disregard of their users privacy, whose private information are essentially treated as merchandise for their customers. Letting Facebook have unfettered access to the speech centers of your brain is a recipe for disaster.

Facebook fined €110 million by EU over WhatsApp buy

Quote:
European Union regulators have fined Facebook €110 million for providing misleading information during the investigation of its 2014 acquisition of WhatsApp.

The fine was levied after the social networking company incorrectly told the European Commission competition regulators that it would be unable to establish “reliable automated matching” between WhatsApp and Facebook user accounts.

In August 2016 WhatsApp updated its terms of service and privacy policy to include the possibility of linking WhatsApp users’ phone numbers with Facebook user identities.

After issuing a statement of objections in December 2016, the Commission found that the technical possibility of linking the accounts existed at the time of Facebook’s original submission to the Commission and that Facebook itself was aware of this possibility.
Surprise!
