Re: ChuckF's new machine
I guess the electricity only powers an electric motor (perhaps more than one) and after that everything is mechanical. A spray of WD40 or similar on the mechanical parts (not the electrical ones) might be a good idea to lube the bearings so that it runs more freely.
Even if a motor does burn out, it's not the end of the world - it's just a matter of finding a modern motor with roughly the same dimensions and running speed to replace the faulty one.
It's probably just burning off some dust from the motor innards. Best to plug it into an adapter lead with a safety fuse (and an RCD breaker would be a good idea, assuming you have such things in the USA) and keep it away from flammable things till it either burns out or stops smelling and you're confident that it's okay.

We have these in the US, they usually put them in kitchens and bathrooms ... places with lots of water. No more killing ourselves by dropping the hair dryer in the bathtub.

Yup, I have been plugging it in to kitchen outlet with a ground fault breaker, but I don't have a fused adapter. It smells like dust, and it's not like there are flames shooting out the register, though that would be pretty badass now that I think about it. Part of what makes me nervous is that the cord is original, and I really should make a replacement, but I think that probably only increases the chances of immolation-by-electro-mechanical calculator.
I didn't tear it down enough to get to the motor; I will need a more dedicated space and patience for that.

Re: ChuckF's new machine
When you plug it in again, make sure you have a video camera handy for the flames.

Now you're talking.
In fact, if you decide against the ceramic case, see if you can attach rotors at the corners. A flying flame-throwing electro-mechanical calculator, would, I think I am correct in saying, be something.

Flame decals!
This flying flame-throwing electro-mechanical calculator needs them.

Find some talented hippy to engrave the H.R. Giger-style innards on the ceramic. Best of both worlds.

Re: ChuckF's new machine
I bet Lenny could make you a case for it with flames cut out. It might be a bit too hipsterish, though.

Re: ChuckF's new machine
So I mentioned that typewriter to my dad nonchalantly and he went to the antique store SECRETLY AND BEHIND MY BACK and bought it for me. :O
He is bringing it over tomorrow, so I am not sure if he got the same one I was looking at, but I will post pictures before it bursts into flames.

If it were my mechanical calculator, I would have my dad hand pinstripe it. Just saying.

Re: ChuckF's new machine
That's it. I bought an autoharp for myself gift shopping. It was 35 dollars. It's finding things like this that make me think this town might actually be an okay place. I have my eye on an accordion sitting in one of our music shops as well.

There's a thrift shop in my neighborhood, the cool shit ChuckF and and Gonzo have come across makes me wonder if it would be worth giving the place a look see.

That's funny, my friend's parents bought him an autoharp just a few months ago.
