Re: WTF happened to Google?
I know, but I have no choice. I should have done this years ago. I'm something like 10 versions of WP behind and all kinds of shit is broken. I'd have to pay god knows what sum to have the old theme completely recoded and it still would be feature-poor compared to a new theme.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Ensign Steve, I want you to do me a favor. Someone implemented the brilliant idea of making logging into Gmail three steps instead of one. I used to go to gmail.com and see two boxes, one for my user name and one for my password, on a mostly blank page. Simple, elegant and efficient. Now I see a splash page advertising the mobile version. When I click on the login button, there is now one box for my user name and I have to click next to get to put in my password. FOR NO GODDAMNED REASON!
So here's what I want you to do. I want you to find out who was behind this. I want you to find that person and I want you to slap that person with a fish, Python style. Please?

I don't even know what that all is. It hasn't affected My Maps so I assume it was some kind of wiki like crowdsource map project? Is this some kind of srs bzns problem for people that this is down?
What is making me cry is that I cannot save stuff from Google Maps UK (with it's train info) to My Maps.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I can't explain Google Maps any more ... it used to do stuff that was quite cool and then it all got harder.
I think Google Map Maker is just an evolution of "suggesting edits" into "outsourcing Google's work". Google My Maps is a different thing.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
AAAAH!
So I was searching my mom's name on Google News, trying unsuccessfully to find some old newspaper articles, and fucking Google does that thing where when they have no direct results, they show you stuff they have for some reason decided is related.
For my mother's name, they've chosen to show me:
A story about an uptick in chupacabra sightings
A couple of stories about Discovery channel viewers being mad because a snake did not eat a man on some show.
A story about someone in Australia faking a shark attack
I didn't see anything in any of those stories about people with the same or even similar first or last names as hers, and I think I deserve an explanation as to why Google thinks my mother had anything to do with these things.
If they can automate their guesswork, they can provide some even vague explanation for the reasoning behind the guesses.
Ensign Steve, when you go back into work the next time, please go find the lever or whatever in the building to turn this feature off. It is a stupid feature and it is making me angry.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Dejanews was started by the sibling of a librarian I used to work with. Seems odd they would be the example of going wrong.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
A lot of people really didn't even like the idea at the outset. Prior to that, newsgroups were archived kind of haphazardly, and there was still the notion that your Usenet posts were transient, or at least not consistently being saved. So a lot of people were pretty put off by the idea of everything being archived for posterity in a single, easily accessed place.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
So, I breathed a bit of new life in my Nexus 7 by turning of all animation and uninstalling Facebook.
Honestly, I'm not sure which one did it, if I get bored, I'll try each one and see which did the trick. Neither is a big loss, as far as I can tell.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
It sure would be nice of Google allowed children to have their own accounts with parental permission and controls so I wouldn't have to use another provider for Kiddo's email and browser.
