Haiti earthquake
As if those poor people didn't have enough misery.
I don't have a lot, but will be donating to Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross as both are already on the ground and working.

Re: Haiti earthquake
Are they? I thought DWB had backed out of Haiti a long time ago because of all the corruption and violence.

I wasn't sure either, so checked their site before posting to make sure they were already there or were already deploying.

The first reports are now emerging from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams who were already working on medical projects Haiti. They are treating hundreds of people injured in the quake and have been setting up clinics in tents to replace their own damaged medical facilities.

ETA: Another organization was sent to me by email, though I haven't vetted them they seem good on a quick review Be the Change | Mercy Corps

Re: Haiti earthquake
The amount of hospitals and the UN headquarters being crushed bodes ill.
Mercy corps has a good profile, they use about 80% or more of their money for actual care instead of administration.
I donate medical supplies to them, they do a dental clinic for the indigent in Portland.

Re: Haiti earthquake
Mercy Corps is who I've used when donating to disaster relief for years. They may have changed since I last did the research, but when I looked into it, they had the highest portion of donations spent on actual care provision that I could find.

Why does he sound like he is trying to poop but cannot?
Prolly trying to poop out the Debil!
Anyways, isn't the whole point of a pact with the devil that you become rich and then he takes your soul? Otherwise why bother if you are being punished for it both on Earth and Hereafter?

Re: Haiti earthquake
Good ol' Pat being true to his nature, blaming the victims. Well, at least this time he didn't blame the gays or the women folk. So all you good Christians pray now with Pat that your god will make them see the light now that he's reigned down death and destruction. The rest of us will try to mop up his mess.
ETA Good to know that Pat knows what the devil said to them.

Re: Haiti earthquake
I'm sad to say that given the world's remarkable capacity to pretend Haiti doesn't exist, this horror might be the best thing that could've happened to the country. I posted this thread after watching a documentary about the country four years ago and regrettably haven't given it much thought since then. I really hope the end result of this tragedy is an overall improvement to the situation there.

Re: Haiti earthquake
My cousin Anne has been in Port-au-Prince for months, setting up clinics. Thankfully, she is fine - her facebook says she's at the French embassy.

Re: Haiti earthquake
The evil and internationally hated US military has landed an air force control crew, apparently the airport's control tower has been knocked out with the radios and they need to sort out all the aid aircraft which will be coming in from abroad, and the carrier Carl Vinson is being sent with a whole slew of transport helicopters instead of the normal air group, as the easiest way of getting stuff around the country.
Sizeable French response as well.
It's interesting how the Dominican Republic, on the same island, has come out so much better. I wonder how much is a result of overcrowding vs poor quality control of building manufacture vs just 'it was closer to Haiti than D.R.'

Re: Haiti earthquake
Every article I have read stated that many/most buildings were unsafe under perfect circumstances. I have to assume that DR, as not the poorest country in the hemisphere, has better building codes and regulations, and you know, more money to spend on safety.

Re: Haiti earthquake
I blame the restaveks for not working hard enough to stop the earthquakes. They need to be taught a lesson.
Seriously... Haiti was already totally f'ed up, and now what little infrastructure their cities have is destroyed.

The alleged leader of the conservative movement, however, has shown his true colors today in a way that should shock and disgust any true conservative, and certainly, any good Christian or good American.
On his radio program, Rush Limbaugh has not only chosen to politicize the earthquake, but is actually discouraging listeners from donating to relief efforts!
Limbaugh’s reasoning is chilling: First, he claims that “we” have already donated via income taxes…in other words, since our government is helping Haiti, we need do no more (other than complain about it.) Second, Limbaugh insists that such donations would be wasted anyhow:
Quote:
There are people that have been trying to save Haiti just as we’re trying to save Africa. You just can’t keep throwing money at it because the dictatorships there just take it all…(and) you’re not creating a permanent system where people can provide for themselves.
|
Aside from conflating Africa and Haiti (a rather racist rhetorical move), Limbaugh ignores the fact that the charities involved are or will be working on the ground directly with the victims in a country whose government has been all but wiped out; no dictator will be able to pilfer a substantial amount from donated funds. He also ignores the fact that relief is needed immediately without regard to the systemic or institutional issues he brings up.
Just as unconscionable is Limbaugh’s accusation that President Obama is using whitehouse.gov to solicit donations for earthquake relief in order to 1.) skim some of those donations and 2.) develop a list of contributors from whom to solicit donations “for (Obama) and other causes.”
But all whitehouse.gov does is link directly to charities providing relief to earthquake victims and survivors!
This is not conservatism. It’s the most vile of partisan politics mixed with a disgraceful lack of human compassion.
