Default Quitting quitter quits party that campaigned for quitting: a UKIP thread

Ukip's only MP Douglas Carswell quits party | Politics | The Guardian

He quit the Conservative Party to join UKIP, now quits UKIP to be an independent.

He has a point. Now that UKIP has "won" - in achieving its goal, if not in being successful in power which is the actual point of a political party - there's no point in UKIP.

The real story of course is all the internal factions in the "party". Is it reassuring that far right (and far left) parties seem to squabble a lot? Or is that a factor in pushing the Conservatives to adopt their positions rather than oppose them?

Oh look, a UKIP thread. Handy that someone made one.

Ukip to face tribunal over use of data in EU referendum campaign | Politics | The Guardian

This could also go in that individual privacy thread but I couldn't find it. As quickly.

Quote:
Ukip is to face a tribunal over its use of analytics during the EU referendum after refusing to cooperate with an investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
...
“We are concerned about invisible processing – the ‘behind the scenes’ algorithms, analysis, data matching, profiling that involves people’s personal information. When the purpose for using these techniques is related to the democratic process, the case for a high standard of transparency is very strong,” said Elizabeth Denham, the information commissioner
Quote:
A Ukip spokesman said the party was prepared to cooperate with the ICO, and was only appealing against a threat of criminal sanctions. “We’re perfectly happy to deal with them, but not under the threat,” he said.
Yeah right. "We're perfectly happy to deal with them, just as soon as we've completed this secure erase operation."

Aside from there never having been a point to making UKIP a party, it seems to me that quitting the UKIP to become an independent is a bit of a redundancy, isn't it? Isn't UKIP the "United Kingdom Independent Party"? So, this guy is no longer an Independent (UKIP), but now an independent?

I suspect there is a nuance here that I do not understand.
