I am intrigued. :chin: I thought Rieslings were uber sweet by their very nature.

Also, you people with your high-falutin boxes of wine can just feast your eyes on this! It actually comes highly recommended by a real-life foodie, but I confess I haven't tried it myself.

Well, la-de-dah, Mrs. Lovey Howell!

I prefer to suck my wine out of discarded hobo clothing.

It's OK, Scarlatti. I put some Kool Aid mix in mine, so it still tastes pretty good.

:unnope: They span the gamut from uber sweet to very dry. Most of them are sweet, though, you are correct.

But not this one!! I quite like Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling.

does barley wine count? as its called by the brits.

or perhaps a german version... a good 12% alc/vol dopple bock. from what i've read thoes german monks wanted a good strong liquid bread for linten fast. It just sounds like a good excuse to get drunk really fast to me.... oh yes lets all not eat and drink strong beer for nurishment.

I have been curious about the "premium" boxed wines, so this thread inspired me to finally try one.

There is big wine warehouse next to my office, so I scooted on over there to check out the selection. They mostly had the typical 5liter/$5 stuff, but there was a smaller section with the premiums. They come in a smaller box, but are still a respectable 3 liters. Also, since they are more snooty, some call them "cask" wines, but it reality it's just a plastic bladder in a box.

This is the one I picked

It was pretty good, but I'm getting burned out on cabernets, I should have gotten the pinot grigio.

I can totally relate to Chuckles story, I feel the same way about Jim Beam. Although, I would have to say boxed wine is a little superior to bourbon, for example, Wiki says the wine bag makes a great blow-up pillow, which beats the hell out of sleeping on a Jim Beam bottle.

A great thread to ask,
what does everyone think about the drive towards synthetic cork and the even more controversial drive to screw tops?

I'm on a big vinho verde kick right now. It's cheap, it goes with many foods and it's great to cook with. It isn't the least bit challenging, but it's fizzy!

Synthetic corks and screwtops? If they work, I'm all for 'em. I swear people get snooty about the strangest things.

I'm the wrong person to ask about corks and caps, seeing as how I'm drinking out of a bag-in-a-box.

I have no opinion one way or the other about synthetic corks. If I find out one is bad for the environment or something, I might take issue, but until then I don't give a damn.

As far as screw off tops, go, I love 'em! I own at least one hundred thousand corkscrews. I keep one in my glovebox and another in my makeup bag, yet I still somehow manage to find myself stranded somewhere without one, and I have to purchase another to add to the collection. Screw-top wines just may be the solution.

I'm fine with synthetic corks, but still have a problem with screw tops.

Yet as I sit here typing, I am drinking sparkling wine from a can... go figure.

Maybe the screw-top people just need to do some good marketing.

Screw tops are for people primitive enough to drink wine from the bottle. Never dealt with synthetic corks. Sounds wierd.

I don't mind the synthetic corks. They're less likely to break in an old bottle.

Screw-tops, to me, indicate a low-quality wine.

Screw-tops do a much better job of keeping wine fresh than a cork does. I think a lot of quality vintners would use them if there wasn't such a strong negative association.

Not always the case, though. Red Bicyclette, for example, has a screw off top, and it's decent for a table wine. It's perfect for concerts, picnics, and any other ocassion where Ensign Steve is likely to forget her corkscrew.
