848417 Story telling chimp. Pan is the Genus for chimpanzees and narrans is the root for 'narrate.' The point that Pratchett is trying to make (and I doubt he originated this) is that humans aren't distinct enough from other chimpanzees to merit our own Genus 'Homo' and that Sapiens (wise) is too often inaccurate.
