More than what? From what I can tell from that, they just found that in their extensive sample of 23 native Californians aged between 18 and 22, they all used uptalk. There's no indication of an increase at all, only speculation that it is.

It's like that whole vocal fry thing that everyone was whining about not long ago. It's something that people have been doing forever, but someone comes up up with some fluffy teeny weeny study where they attribute it to teenaged girls and young women, and everyone gets all frothed up about how it's some loathsome and ineffectual affectation.

When "Life Hacking" is Really White Privilege

The line at the post office was 18 people deep.

I’d been waiting awhile, and was thinking about something I’d read: that in Europe, public services are for the public — meaning everyone — whereas in the US, public services are for those who can’t afford a private alternative. Hence the wait.

I looked around and noticed that no one among the patrons or the employees was a white man. At the Hanover Street post office, a half block off Wall Street, that was notable.

A white man walked in. He surveyed the line and confidently jetted past it, over to an employee pushing a wheeled bin across the floor. He put his hand on the employee’s back. He said, “Hey buddy … can you do me a favor? I just have this one thing.”

I also just have this one thing, I thought. And, this line is for people who have one or more things, douchebag. And, you have no right to ask a “favor” that dicks over 18 people uninvolved in granting the “favor.”

White Americans believe they experience more racism than African Americans

There’s a saying that “the new racism is to deny that racism exists.” If that is the case, it may explain a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School. Their findings claim that self-described white Americans believe they have “replaced blacks” as the primary victims of racial discrimination in contemporary America.

I actually want to talk to some of those people. Like, to find out what specific incidents they can cite to support their assessments.

Because I have been thinking about it, trying to come up with actual lived experiences I've had that I could have even remotely interpreted as racist against me for being white.

Here's what I've got so far:

1. There was an Indian restaurant I used to go to for lunch sometimes. Whenever I went in with a black guy, they'd automatically give us pickle with our menus. If I didn't have a black guy with me, I'd have to ask for it. I'm not even talking about dark complected Indian guys, either. I mean, like African Americans. So it's not like that was just racism against non-Indians or even non-Asians or anything.

2. I looked up one of those creepy marketing company's profiles of me, and it listed genealogy, adult contemporary music, and low fat cooking as some of my interests.

3. Sometimes, when I order something spicy in a restaurant, the waiter will ask if I am sure, because it's pretty spicy.

4. Somebody once gave me a $25 gift certificate to Crate and Barrel.

5. Once, I went to a Vietnamese market with a Chinese person, and we both bought exactly the same items--one banh mi, and a box of noodles--but they gave her some kind of 'retailer-slash-homey' discount even though she is neither a retailer nor a homey. So I ended up paying like $.36 more than she did.

So on reflection, I disagree with the assessment that racism against white people in America is ten out of ten. It clearly goes to 11.

One time I went to a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown in San Francisco with my roommate from China. The waitress said something to her in Chinese and pointed at me and what I was eating. My roommate nodded her head and they both laughed. After the waitress left, I asked what was up and my roommate told me, "she said foreigners don't usually like that." I said, "hey wait! I'm the foreigner?" and she goes, "oh, yeah, I guess not!" and we laughed some more.

It wasn't even spicy. I don't eat spicy food.

Mick's mother spent a good three years or so calling me "that large White girl" before she gave in and learned my name. I generally pull that anecdote out when I hear younger people complain about being uncomfortable being on the other side of racism before telling them to

The graph is interesting. Not only do whites perceive racism as a zero sum game but they have never thought they were as bad as blacks perceived and assumed blacks held more racism towards them than they did.
