GSA: Trump Hotel Lease Is Fine Despite Our Own Contract

Quote:
The Government Services Administration released a letter on Thursday saying that the agency sees no issue with its decision to lease the historic Old Post Office Building to be used as President Donald Trump’s hotel in Washington D.C., despite a stipulation in the lease that has been interpreted to prohibit any elected official from benefiting from the deal
The justification is that Trump won't actually get his hands on the money made during his term until after his term. Is it just me or is there a really obvious ethical problem with that line of reasoning?

Quote:
In the letter, addressed to Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons who is now overseeing the hotel, GSA contracting officer Kevin Terry argues that because the president had resigned from a formal position with the company and was no longer receiving proceeds from the hotel while in office, the lease was good to go. He cites the fact that the Trump Organization agreed not to send earnings from the hotel to the president’s trust until he leaves office.

Thank you, Trump. Thank you because I am joyful. Thank you because I am well. No matter how old I become, I shall never forget how we received Trump two days ago. Centuries will pass, and the generations still to come will regard us as the happiest of mortals, as the most fortunate of men, because we lived in the century of centuries, because we were privileged to see Trump, our inspired leader. Yes, and we regard ourselves as the happiest of mortals because we are the contemporaries of a man who never had an equal in world history.

The men of all ages will call on thy name, which is strong, beautiful, wise and marvelous. Thy name is engraven on every factory, every machine, every place on the earth, and in the hearts of all men.

Every time I have found myself in his presence I have been subjugated by his strength, his charm, his grandeur. I have experienced a great desire to sing, to cry out, to shout with joy and happiness. And now see me--me!--on the same platform where the Great Trump stood a year ago. In what country, in what part of the world could such a thing happen.

I write books. I am an author. All thanks to thee, O great educator, Trump. I love a young woman with a renewed love and shall perpetuate myself in my children--all thanks to thee, great educator, Trump. I shall be eternally happy and joyous, all thanks to thee, great educator, Trump. Everything belongs to thee, chief of our great country. And when the woman I love presents me with a child the first word it shall utter will be : Trump.

O great Trump, O leader of the peoples,
Thou who broughtest man to birth.
Thou who fructifies the earth,
Thou who restorest to centuries,
Thou who makest bloom the spring,
Thou who makest vibrate the musical chords...
Thou, splendour of my spring, O thou,
Sun reflected by millions of hearts.

The science of “blue lies”: There’s a reason Trump supporters embrace his alternative facts - Salon.com

A Scientific American article on the president*'s "blue lies". Worth reading in its entirety; it's one of the best explanations I've read in awhile for American politics, and will probably influence me going forward.

The Southern Appalachians region is one of the poorest in the country. The Southern Appalachian region is infamous for its high rates of unemployment, the low wages for those who do find employment, the very high poverty rates, etc.

Consequently, there are several federal programs which aim to help the people of the Southern Appalachians. Chief among these is the Appalachian Regional Commission, which provides funding that is intended to help improve the local infrastructure, improve education, reduce poverty, and so forth.

The counties that make up the Southern Appalachian region went overwhelmingly in favor of Trump during the last election. In my experience, whenever the subject of politics comes up, there's about a 90% chance you'll hear something like this: "I hate Democrats; all they care about are city people [especially brown city people]; they don't give a single, solitary damn about us [white] country folks. Democrats have never done anything for us."

Meanwhile, as an editorial in yesterday's newspaper notes, one of the first programs slated for elimination -- not reduction, elimination -- by the Trump Administration is the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Will this come up in the next election? I'd bet you almost any amount of money that it will not. If it does, it will almost-certainly be because some local politician blames the loss of the Appalachian Regional Commission on Democrats -- somehow.

It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly good the Republicans are at getting people (especially poor rural people) to vote against their own interests.

"Another kick in the teeth": a top economist on how trade with China helped elect Trump - Vox

Another article relating to the president*'s supporters. This addresses trade and its economic effects. It's an interview with an economist who has concluded that trade can be a lot more one-sided than it's generally held to be, and that the effects have disproportionately affected certain regions of the country, which have become far more right-wing in response. He also concludes that the president*'s policies will make things far worse. Also worth reading in its entirety.

I am almost loathe to say this because it normalizes the situation, but nothing of real substance has actually changed. ISPs have never been prohibited from selling your personal information to anyone who wants it. The legislation that just got taken back had not even gone into effect yet, and the other net neutrality rules that are going to go away had only been in place a few months or something.

That legislation was long overdue, and sorely needed, but we have never had any kind of privacy protections from our ISPs. They are not terribly forthcoming about what information they are selling or in what form, but if you cannot buy someone's individual browsing history on the open market right now, you probably won't be able to anytime soon. I'm guessing that they avoid doing anything quite that blatant just to keep it under the radar. And as I said in a different thread, it is extremely unlikely that, even if the major ISPs set up open markets to buy specific individuals' internet histories, they'd put their pals on it. So I don't think the people taking up collections right now are actually trying to rip people off or anything, but I'll eat my hat if they are able to do what they're promising.

There has never been any real requirement that your ISP disclose what information they're selling, so it's mostly down to trying to figure it out after the fact based on what gets out. So, I mean, yeah, I don't want to normalize it to make people OK with it or anything, because normal is much, much worse than most people seem to realize. I've been getting Cassandraed about this shit for yeeeeaaaars, so I'm glad that people are finally paying some attention.

Things are very very bad right now, and the one big change that did get made is that the part where congress is prohibited from passing similar privacy protections in the future (plus there's a weird thing with the FTC's jurisdiction right now, which is super egregious, but that's probably temporary), so there's not much that people can do now with the current scheme.

If you want to do something make things better, the best way IMO is to use this to gain traction for municipal broadband efforts. Right now, while people are finally paying attention.

I still think that cat might be already out of the bag, and it's just a matter of time before some data aggregator sells/is hacked.

Data aggregators can have some scary amounts of stuff: Data aggregation - Wikipedia

As far as them selling or getting hacked, most of that stuff is and has been available on the market already, so I'm not sure how more hacked or sold it could get. I point people to Pam Dixon's testimony on data brokers all the time, but just in case anyone has missed it, here it is again. There are more links and stuff in the privacy thread.

And it's true that you can't take back what's already out there, but there's new information to be gathered all the time, so if we did staunch the flow, it could die by attrition.

Also, holy cats, it is crazy how ignorant Trump's supporters are. Maybe it was the vague and largely nonsensical he said combined with the dumb marketing slogan or something, but the people who like him all have the weirdest and most counterfactual beliefs about how he must agree with them about their personal issues they care about.

These guys thinking he'd protect their internet privacy, I saw a guy who had convinced himself that Trump was going to legalize marijuana (AFTER he'd nominated Jeff Sessions!), and thedoc somehow seems to think that Trump is against eminent domain* and will destroy the Appalachian Trail.

It's been a months long process for me just trying to grasp the enormity of how stupid so many people are.

* In thedoc's defense, I don't think he knew the correct terminology for that, so maybe he'd just not been able to look it up.

My sister has a friend on Facebook who is convinced that Trump will do anything possible to make space colonies a thing. I have no idea where the fuck she got that idea, but she thinks Trump is going to spend big on NASA and work on manned missions to Mars and space mining and all this stuff... And she brings it up constantly on my sister's posts that are about unrelated issues about how Trump is awful. So bizarre.

Air and water pollution (even given that they've improved a lot since a few decades ago in the West particularly) are responsible for a number of mental/neurological health issues, I suspect.

Some recent studies suggest that air pollution may be a contributing factor in autism, for example.

Makes me wonder what the effects the rampant pollution in countries like China and India and Nigeria might be having.

It's one of the few geniuses of his con, although I'm not sure I would give him credit or if he stumbled into it. In many fans head's he's seen as a buddy. Thus his constant lying ends up having a secondary purpose, because everyone knows he lies and he does it so often, you are never quite sure where he stands on any of his statements and this wobbliness makes for a nice blank slate to fill in with other things they are certain they have in common with their buddy.

If you really listen to his freeform, it's a combination of bonding with the audience in a way that makes it seem like he's having a conversation with each person, and will often engage them emotionally, then a meandering ramble that is vague enough to allow each person to take away what they want. The emotional engagement makes people weight the value of each statement sometimes just erasing them or making them the star. This is why he reads like shit, well even more shit, as it hasn't been edited down by the viewing experience.

Or in short, he's holding church, reading from the wet moldy cheeto bible.

The racist and sexist statements signal trustworthiness/authenticity to a lot of racists and sexists, who believe that most other white/non-black people/men hold the same racist/sexist beliefs that they do, but can't say so because of the PC police.

So it's not just that a lot of those people chose racism/sexism over their self-interest on various other issues, it's that their racism/sexism was part of what enabled Trump to convince them that he wasn't just full of shit.

To a person who's not a racist, Trump saying that New Jersey Muslims were cheering on the rooftops on 9/11 makes him a lying racist demagogue. To the racists, this is evidence that he's willing to tell the truth when other politicians are not, which pulls them in to be conned on other issues, like that he'll bring healthcare costs down and the like. Some of them might still have made the tradeoff if he explicitly said "I'm going to make things bad for non-white people, but I am also going to cut your healthcare and XYZ other programs that you like," but I imagine a lot of them wouldn't have.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spends his first weeks isolated from an anxious bureaucracy - The Washington Post

Many career diplomats say they still have not met him, and some have been instructed not to speak to him directly — or even make eye contact.
Good thing it's not a people and relationship building kind of job.

Or maybe he knows with the budget cut to the department, the first dead embassy personnel makes him a literal murderer.

Here’s why Comey may have stayed silent on the Russia probe before we voted — and it should terrify Trump

Quote:
According to a WhoWhatWhy exposé, published Thursday on AlterNet, the FBI declined to inform the U.S. public about ties between Trump and the Russian government for fear of exposing informants and “[jeopardizing] a long-running, ultra-sensitive operation targeting mobsters tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin — and to Trump.”

Sort of like this, from Edwin Meese - Wikiquote

U.S. News: You criticize the Miranda ruling, which gives suspects the right to have a lawyer present before police questioning. Shouldn't people, who may be innocent, have such protection?

Meese: Suspects who are innocent of a crime should. But the thing is, you don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime. That's contradictory. If a person is innocent of a crime, then he is not a suspect.
But from Edwin Meese - Wikipedia
Quote:
Iraq–Jordan Pipeline Scandal

During the 1980s, James McKay, an independent prosecutor, was appointed to investigate alleged financial improprieties by Meese while he was attorney general. As part of this investigation, McKay looked into Meese's involvement in a Bechtel pipeline deal in the Middle East.[23] The pipeline was to extend from Iraq to Jordan and was negotiated by Meese, Shimon Peres, Bruce Rappaport, Robert C. McFarlane, and others. Although he was not prosecuted, Meese ultimately resigned. Prior to his departure, several top Justice Department officials resigned in protest of what they and others viewed as improper acts by the attorney general.[24]
Did that make him guilty?

Context for those unaware:

:lolhog:

In other news, it looks like the FBI is also probing whether shitgibbon aides directly helped Russian intelligence last year. Stone is the only one mentioned by name, but I wouldn't be surprised if people like 9iu11ani, Manafort, or Page were under investigation for this as well.
