Go throw a few bucks to their GoFundMe if you can afford it.
Edit: Allow me to revise that final sentence. According to the BJ comments GoFundMe takes 8.5% out of donations to charities, so give them money directly or go through YouCaring if possible.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
The problem with the student is not simply that he thinks homosexuality is a sin and gay marriage is not Biblically valid.
It's that he expressed support for government workers imposing their beliefs on citizens in contravention of the law. Which clearly suggests that as a social worker, he might feel that it is acceptable for him to deny services to LGBT people or refuse to recognize a same-sex spouse as a spouse on the basis of his beliefs. Regardless of whether that was publicly posted, I think that's an issue. If you want to be a gov't worker, you need to commit to fulfilling the law without discrimination.
Of course, the university is also correct in stating that simply expressing such bigoted sentiments would affect how LGBT people would feel trusting him to treat them fairly. And the issue of supporting Kim Davis makes that even worse, since he's expressed support explicitly for treating LGBT citizens differently.
The article does not frame it in terms of his support for gov't officials applying their personal beliefs to the application of the law, and it seems possible that the university did not either. Instead it's about how his hateful sentiments would make LGBT people feel. I agree with that, of course, but I am somewhat sensitive to the notion that crybaby Christians will feel all persecuted if you suggest that they can't talk about how Sodomites burn in hell forever anymore. It's stupid, but stupid people vote (of course, I don't know what public opinion is in the UK, it might be that there's no reason to be concerned). Focusing on how his statements suggest he would not perform his duties is a stronger argument since it does not rely as much on being strongly enough pro-LGBT to think that being anti-gay for religious reasons is no more valid than being racist and dressing it up as religious. We wouldn't let a KKK member justify discriminating against black people as a religious belief, and I'd say the same for anti-LGBT discrimination. The fact that there's stronger scriptural support for anti-gay bigotry is irrelevant, the gov't's job is not to adjudicate such theological distinctions.
(I would, however, be interested to know whether they would similarly expel a Muslim for expressing support for sharia or otherwise endorsing Islamic anti-LGBT rules. Not because I think both should stay but because I think both should be expelled.)

To the Guys Who "Outed Me" This Week
This part jumped out at me:
Quote:
It shows the deep-rooted insecurities of Christian men who’ve been raised in such a misogynistic, alpha male head space, that the idea of someone being gay genuinely terrifies them—maybe because they imagine someone treating or viewing them, the way they’ve always treated and viewed women.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/04/supr...s-reasons.html
Quote:
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed a victory on narrow grounds to a Colorado Christian baker who refused for religious reasons to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, stopping short of setting a major precedent allowing people to claim exemptions from anti-discrimination laws based on religious beliefs.
The justices, in a 7-2 decision, said the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed an impermissible hostility toward religion when it found that baker Jack Phillips violated the state's anti-discrimination law by rebuffing gay couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig in 2012. The state law bars businesses from refusing service based on race, sex, marital status or sexual orientation.
|
Today I learned that a narrow grounds ruling is a ruling not meant to be broadly applicable, a ruling just for a specific purpose.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
Singer/songwriter Sam Smith comes out as gender non-binary
A person as famous as Sam Smith coming out as non-binary is in all likelihood completely unprecedented. This is a huge deal. I mean, Smith has sold millions of records, has several Grammys and Oscars to his* name, and sang the theme for the most recent Bond film. Hard to overstate the importance of representation like that.
*Smith apparently wishes to continue using male pronouns for the time being, which is just as well because I'll apparently have to train myself out of using them for him.

Along similar lines, amazing interview from The Daily Show:
I'm not going to do justice to the interview by attempting to summarise it. Just watch it.

This video by ContraPoints is fucking mindblowing and I salute Natalie Wynn
As a cis-gendered male, the education is appreciated, the writing and humor and realness is awesome.
Also, Chelsea Manning has now been in solitary confinement for 20 days.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
Chelsea Manning was released from jail Friday after 62 days of confinement, including 28 days in solitary, after refusing to answer questions before a grand jury; she has stated that she will not testify in front of any grand jury, but expects continued attempts to compel her testimony.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
I'm not sure that really counts as an LGBTQIA issue. Not everything that happens to a queer person is a queer issue per se...
