Last night while I was paranoidly staying awake all night (tl;dr version: I got hit in the head at soccer and I was scared to sleep in case I had a concussion) I watched The Girl Next Door because some people at the forum where I cheat on you guys said it was surprisingly good. Now, I saw it (in a theater, no less!) when it first came out, but didn't remember anything about it and suspect I probably fell asleep. The fear of death was enough to keep me awake this time, and I can safely say that it is not a good movie. It has some funny bits, mostly thanks to Timothy Olyphant's bad guy character, but the plot centers around a porn star who just needs the love of a goofy awkward high school senior to see what she's missing and believe in herself so, like, both stupid and offensive, plus the writers do not appear to have ever been in a high school, a bank, a strip club, a casino, or basically anywhere else on earth, and do not understand how those places work, especially with respect to the things that teenagers are and are not allowed to do in them.

I saw it this weekend. I was ... disappointed.

Russell Crowe was wasted in that movie, and poor Cate Blanchett was really wasted in it. What on Earth made her sign up for it, I wonder?

It didn't help matters that the two of them had exactly zero chemistry together.

Ew. I feel yer pain. I saw that pile of pigvomit in the theater, no less. It was one of those "let's drive to the movies and just see whatever looks entertaining that's starting soon" movie nights with the wife. Needless to say, we didn't end up with great pickings, and made the worst possible choice.

I'd never even heard of the comic book/graphic novel/whatever, nor of the film itself before we rolled into the parking lot. So maybe I was supposed to know what was going on without waiting for Exposition Man to tell me in the penultimate act. But I didn't, and I doubt knowing would have made it suck less.

No it wouldn't have, Sock, because they practically made that shit up whole cloth. Of course that was the charm of the original, the stories stood completely independent of one another and never were in any sense of the word serial. Each one was a slightly different reality with totally different power structures.

Also she didn't die ONCE in that movie. FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD! A two hour Aeon Flux, should have had her die at least six times, maybe eight.

I haven't seen the whole movie because I got bored early. But please someone tell me she took her artificial vertebrae out and bent herself into a pretzel to get into a top secret base.

:brooding: IM 2 already left the IMAX. Goddamnit.

1993's Secret Garden is on Youtube, so I'm watching that tonight. :^^

So look at what's just a train ride away from me:

Does this make any sense?
"When are you going to get Avatar?"
"To make this more concrete, we make a technical step. We perform a complex rotation to go to Euclidean space, rather than Minkowski. This is a rotation on some of the fields in complex space (leading to h00 → −h00 [sic] ). The result is that we may use on the 2-dimensional space an Euclidean metric, which makes all surfaces much better behaved."

I saw No One Knows About Persian Cats last night. It's about two kids who are trying to start an indie rock band in Iran so they meet a lot of bands, meanwhile they are also dealing with black marketeers to get passports and visas to go to London and play there. The story is very interesting but the acting is not always very good (they are mostly amateurs) and the dialogues are a bit preachy so it's a bit of a mixed emotions kinda thing. Good bands though.

Capitalism: A Love Story

I'm not big on Michael Moore, but this was actually an illuminating movie about just how much the rich have been screwing us over.

Really, the only negative things I can say about the movie are:

Moore's clowning around in public places doesn't help. If he wants credibility, doing asinine antics in public places just makes him look like an immature doofus; but if that's the image he wants to project, more power to him.

The interviews with a Catholic priest and a Rabbi, Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox--whatever the hell he was--don't really add any substance to the film. I could find you Baptist preachers who'd tell you that God loves capitalism, that Jesus would give Republicans the high-five.

Ghostrider is on TV. I have no idea why I am watching it. It's worse than I remember, and I remember it being pretty bad.

I found out that Maturin hasn't seen very many Werner Herzog movies, so I decided I'd get a bunch offa Netflix, one at a time, and we'd do a very slow moving film festival.

I hadn't seen Heart of Glass in a really long time, so I decided to have that be the first one.

I MADE A HUGE TERRIBLE BONER, YOU GUYS.

Maturin fell asleep about four times, went to the bathroom or something maybe three, played with the dog for a while, fiddled around in the kitchen, and then pretty much just sat there looking at his feet for a while.

It's still a good movie, though.

Know what would have been even worse? I was going to do Fata Morgana next. That's the one where, when I saw it in a theater, about half the audience walked out in the first ten minutes or so.

Stick with the Marriage of Eva Von Braun, or whatever it was called.
That's the only watchable one, and only because it's an allegory about East and West Germany, which we are all old enough to remember.

Not all of us. ;)

I'll have to watch it, though, as I like pieces like that. And BB2 grew up in West Germany, so I've heard plenty of tales.

The Marriage of Maria Braun. That was Fassbinder.

I think - I think someone just lost face! :giggle:

I  German cinema (European cinema in general, really). I love modern pieces like Goodbye Lenin (Stormy, did you see that one?) and The Lives of Others. I also like Wolfgang Petersen - I really hope he returns to Ender's Game and gets it out of production purgatory.

Arg. I mixed up my crazy German directors again.

Fitzcarraldo then, maybe Aguirre, the Wrath of God.

By "we" I meant Lisarea, Maturin and I. OK Stormlight too.

Or screw it, just get some Fassbinder.

A bit late to the page, but Werner did play himself in The Boondocks Season III opener.

Hilarious!

He's seen most of the big ones, like Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre. I'm working on the smaller ones now, mostly just because I haven't seen a lot of them in a while, and I'm using Maturin as an excuse.

Anyways, I have now modified my Netflix to bump up more plot driven stuff, though, so now we've got Kaspar Hauser, Stroszek, and Woyzeck coming up next, then some documentaries.

Also, he's not just some generic German director, you guys. OMG, WHATEVER, YOU WACKOS! As I'm sure he would say, though, this is not a significant bullet.
