Kim Jong Il has died.
Now it gets interesting:
Quote:
Kim Jong Il, the second-generation North Korean dictator who defied global condemnation to build nuclear weapons while his people starved, has died, Yonhap News reported. He was 70.
The news came in a radio broadcast at noon local time, Yonhap reported, citing North Korea’s official media. Kim probably had a stroke in August 2008 and may have also contracted pancreatic cancer, according to South Korean news reports.
The son of Kim Il Sung, North Korea’s founder, Kim was a chain-smoking recluse who ruled for 17 years after coming to power in July 1994 and resisted opening up to the outside world in order to protect his regime. The potential succession of his little-known third son, Kim Jong Un, threatens to trigger a dangerous period for the Korean peninsula, where 1.7 million troops from the two Koreas and the U.S. square off every day.

NK state television: Kim Jong Il is dead
North Korean Leader Kim Jong Il, 69, Has Died - NYTimes.com
I have been a relatively passionate amateur North Korea watcher for a while. Not only because of its novelty as an anachronistic throwback to Stalin, or the genuinely erratic leadership, but also because it represents all the things I found engaging about the failures of Soviet and East European communism. This is pretty huge. Kim Il Sung planned for the succession for years before he died. It will be interesting to see whether the totalitarian-communist dynasty can sustain itself with a young Kim Jong Un and a regent, or whether there is an independent party structure to compete with it, or whether the whole horrible regime will be swept away. If nothing else, it will give the outside world a little bit more data about the political realities inside the North.

I guess I didn't realize how little is known about N. Korea. All the news articles use the qualifier "It is believed" and "it is thought" every other sentence.

Its a bionic Brezhnev. So the question becomes - does he have the technology?

Re: Kim Jong Il has died.
I wonder if anyone in the army in a position to benefit from a dynastic change, or even a reform movement. Personally I would be seeking that person out and offering them lots and lots of money.

Sauron, you advocate for a country run like Korea, does this sadden you?

Oh for Christ's sake, J. When has Sauron ever in his life advocated a dictatorship?

just because one does not recognize a small group of people in control as a dictatorship does not make it not so.

Ha ha - you took that as liv denying that North Korea is governed as a dictatorship! It's partly liv's fault for packaging her defence of Sauron as a question, I guess. But still, in two bounds you've leapt from misinterpreting Sauron's stance to missing liv's point.
I can't wait to see how you are going to misread mine ...

Re: Kim Jong Il has died.
The point is going to be that the US is a non-communist dictatorship, while North Korea is being painted as what all lefties aspire their country to be.
If we want to respond in the same way, we should ask Jerome how his dreamland is going, but unfortunately there is no news from those parts of Somalia where government has broken down completely.

Re: Kim Jong Il has died.
We need fair and balanced views from both the right and the left ITT! So can someone please link the views of the Imperial Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan please?
Come to think of it, we already HAVE the opposite view taken to a ludicrous degree. We have AML.

Nope, you don't understand what I wrote. Start from the beginning, it is only a couple of posts, see if you can get it.
