Hey, in the unlikely event that Trump is removed from office by the Senate, who thinks Mike Pence will be any better when it comes to belligerence and escalation of violence?

The picture we are getting is of the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and Vice-President Mike Pence both egging on an impetuous President to launch the January 2nd drone attack that killed the Iranian military commander Qassem Suleimani at Baghdad International Airport. None of Trump’s other senior political or military advisers, meanwhile, appear to have urged restraint, despite the near-certainty that the move would inflame the entire Middle East and provoke reprisals. Any deliberative policymaking process appears to have been replaced by a combination of belligerence, toadyism, and saluting the Commander-in-Chief.

It's worth keeping in mind that both Mike Pompeo and Mike Pence are Evangelicals. They would probably love to jump-start the events that they believe will lead to Armageddon and to the Second Coming of Christ.

Indeed, I've seen several Facebook posts recently which have suggested that the "End Times" are nigh, that Trump is doing "God's will" in helping to bring about those "End Times," and that they can't wait to be "called home" to Heaven.


Pointing out that Christians have been claiming that the "End Times" are nigh for roughly 2,000 years now does not seem to have any detectable effect upon their beliefs, but it does tend to engender nasty, hate-filled responses.

Given that what's changed in the past century is that we ourselves can bring about our own extermination multiple times over, I dearly wish the eschatologically minded would leave it up to GODot's timing and refrain from efforts to hurry things along by their own intervention. Personally, I find the prospect that I might somehow take flight to meet my invisible creator unlikely in the extreme. I see no advantage to perishing by manmade catastrophe.

My enjoyment of pointing out Trump's stupidity has been tempered by a realization that the primary reason why Trump is so lazy and stupid is because he knows his fans will excuse and ignore it.

I don't really want people to stop doing it, because I think it helps keeps my sanity that other people acknowledge how much of a shitshow Trump is.

Social Security is called the "third rail of American politics" for a reason - it's a live electrical wire that you're not supposed to touch. It's easy to forget now (and was always hard to understand), but Bush 43 was relatively popular when he attempted to privatise Social Security. Katrina is what we remember as what caused a big dent in his popularity, but it was really the two events together - Katrina and the failed Social Security privatisation attempt. Then President* Sundown here just blurts it out on live television. It's like Romney's "47%" remarks if Romney had known he was being recorded.
