Default Should I get another Mac?

My eight year old Macbook has a few problems, bt the most recent isse is that I spilled some water on it, and now several keys have stopped working. (I had to copy and paste the u in the title, and I cannot type qotation marks.

I like the idea of having a Mac - its gotten me ot of a few jams with my iPhone and when the Windows PC was having troble. Bt, I dont need a Mac, I jst like having one.

The laptop mostly gets light dty - its 80-90% web browsing, and then sometimes for qick photo processing.

Is it worth nearly twice the price jst becase I like having an OSX system in my home?

I think its not about money, its about value. I got a lot of value from my MacBook, and I am thinking that if Mac hardware quality is still worth the premium, then I may want to spend that extra money.

I think that when you use something a lot, you should get the one you really want.

You have my permission to get a new Mac.

Apple has really doubled down on soldering everything together and locking you out of really any repair or upgrade. If that's not a problem, then yeah go for it! Because of that it can be best to get slightly more RAM or graphics than you might need at the moment because it won't be upgradable in the future, or just assume that it might get older faster.

Yes. MacBook and MacBook Air refresh should be on the way soon. MacBook will probably have a lower price point if you want to buy new - if that is less important will be good deals on refurb.

My old MacBook lasted six years until the screen broke and I just decided to replace it, though the drive was fine.

After about year the new MacBook wouldn’t take a battery charge, and the problem wasn’t the cord or adapter. There was something wrong with the port, the guy at the Mac “Genius” bar told me. He then explained to me that because the innards of the port were soldered to the motherboard and keyboard, all one unit, all that would have to be replaced for about 750 bucks, half of what I paid for it. And of course the warranty would not cover it because the problem was somehow “my fault,” though he could not explain how.

Personally if I were you and you like Macs, get a new MacBook. They are much improved over something eight years old.

But don’t listen to anyone at the “Genius” bar. Check everything they tell you.

I did, and discovered the charge port was NOT soldered to the motherboard. It was a separate unit. I pointed this out to the “genius” and he freaked out and asked, “where are you getting this stuff from?”

“From your own online Apple documentation, fuckface,” I replied. (I didn’t actually say “fuckface,” only thought it.)

“Let me check our documentation,” he said, and scurried off to a back room. He emerged with a shit-eating grin and said, “Well, you’re right, and the fix will only cost 96 dollars. Is that better?”

Uh, yeah fuckface, that’s better.

That guy Louis Rossman seems to know what's up with the Apple products.

I don't pay much attention to the details of the Apple related stuff he says because it's irrelevant to me, but he seems like a p. cool guy, and he does a lot of explaining on his YouTube and on his main website.

So, I bought a new MacBook. Ordered a new MacBook pro 13 inch with 16G memory and a 512G hard drive.

When it came down to it, the latest 13 inch MacBook pro (which is about the size I want), is not twice the price of a Windows laptop with similar specs, it is twice the price of laptops with lesser specs.

It is easy to find a cheaper laptop with some better specs, but they were usually much larger form factors, and the really nice stuff was only a few hundred dollars cheaper, and some were just as expensive.

(In order to post this, I copy and pasted u, avoided contractions and the number seven.)

Well, I guess now that your problem has been solved, I can confess that my shift key has been giving me trouble.

So I think it is time for me to swap out this 30 year old keyboard with one of my other ones so I can clean it. :smoove:

Oh, oops! I got a 13" Silver Macbook Pro (2018 refresh) with 16G memory and a 512G hard drive.

The keys are a little different, and I think I like the old MacBook's keyboard better. The toolbar is cute but ultimately not world changing. Maybe I'll change my mind about it when I start to use it more.

My MacBook has lasted twice as long as any Windows laptop I've even owned. Not one single problem, and after many years it's still quite relevant. I think a person could make an argument that it's not more expensive, when you are thinking about the long-run.

I'm pretty sure my wife has gone through 3 laptops since I purchased my first MacBook. I had to add more memory to it to keep it working well, but it's been a useful device all 8 years I've had it.

I'm anticipating getting 5 years out of the the thing. If I get that, it will be worth the money. The problem is that it's a gamble. It's always a gamble, but this is a more expensive gamble.

Default Re: Should I get another Mac?

I am on year six of my mid-2012 MBP and look forward to at least one more. Maybe 2. I upgraded the RAM and put in an SSD.

I replaced the fan about 2-3 years ago when the bearings started to fail. That cost about $10.

A couple months ago I thought it was time to cash it in when the screen started failing. I decided if I could fix it for $100 or less I would. Symptoms were consistent with LVDS cable failure so I ordered a new cable for $12. About an hour of work to replace it. Symptoms improved but then returned after a couple of days, so I ordered a used display for about $60. Swapped out the old one with the replacement - only about 30 minutes of work - and it's fine now. I think maybe it was the LVDS connection itself on the old screen. Also got pretty good at disassembling and reassembling it and I have not lost any of the screws that are actually important. The only other thing that I have done to it is tighten up the screws on the hinges. After five years of heat and abuse they got a little loose and I think the wobble might have contributed to the cable issue a little.

So I expect it to last at least another year. So far there is no macOS feature I am not able to use.

I'm driving an iMac from 2009. It's getting slow, especially since I upgraded the OS to El Capitan (a long story) but I have done nothing else to it. Apple tax? Looks more like a rebate to me.
