Default Old people and financial aid

So I found a certification I want to get to add health information management (specifically medical coding) to my business offerings. There are a bunch of training programs, but I want someone else to pay for it, so had to find an accredited school to be eligible for federal grants and stuff. Which it all pisses me off, as I could probably just study for the certification exam if I knew what books to get, but there it is. A nearby traditional University offers the course online so that will work.

Anyway, do they give many grants to non-traditional students, specifically old people? Am I going to have to jump through more or fewer hoops? Anyone gotten a grant at 41 or have any idea what I might expect?

Try looking at Pell. The federal backed student loans are not age based (the Hope one may be) I haven't looked in a while, but there are plenty of older students at the school I am at with federal loans.

If you find a school you like, you can always as the financial aid office and they can set you up.

Yeah I just wondered if there was a difference between the "in theory" and "in practice". One would hope they would want to encourage people to further their education, but this is the real world, and a bureacracy at work

Oddly enough, earlier today I read an article about scholarships offered by a rural electric cooperative in Colorado to it's members, they have a number available for high school seniors going into college and 10 scholarships/grants for adults over 18 who have an interruption in their traditional education. So, yes, grants and scholarships are indeed available to non-traditional students.

Also look around for grants and scholarships for displaced workers.

You might need to gin up your case for being a displaced worker to get one of those specifically, but that might also lead you to other resources for the olds.

Unless your parents can still claim you as a dependent, your age has nothing to do with anything. As far as non-traditional goes, your hoops might be slightly different than if you were on a degree path, but maybe not. I would fill out the FAFSA and apply for Pell (those are both done in the same step), and get in touch the financial aid department at the university and see what else they recommend.
