What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
Seriously, I have no idea, I don't know anyone who has upgraded yet.
So tell me people, what the fuck is up with it? Is it any good? Is there problems? Would you recommend someone upgrade from Win7 for any particular reason?
Surely someone here has done it... what's the verdict?

I have a couple of friends who are currently on Win10. I'll give them a holla.

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
I've upgraded two of my PCs* to it. No real problems so far. A few things are a bit different but it's much less of a jolt than the "upgrade" from 7 to 8 was.
On a normal PC (as opposed to a tablet) it's very much like Windows 7 with a few minor differences.
I would say that if you have a machine with Windows 8.1 but you prefer/preferred Windows 7 or XP, then you should definitely upgrade it to 10.
If you have a machine with Windows 7, then there's not much point in upgrading to 10 right now unless you're curious.
* I still have other PCs running Windows 7, Windows XP, and even Windows 98SE on one old box.

tl;dnr:Basically, if you have Windows Media Center and want to make sure you keep that functionality without having to pay for it again, you should upgrade before the eligibility period ends.
longer version:
From a user's experience, MS really took the criticisms of Windows 8 to heart and really, really worked hard to make the best experience on the appropriate platform. Pretty much if you upgrade to Windows 10 from 7, you'll still be able to do everything you want in more or less the way, and if you're familiar with 8/8.1 you'll be impressed with how much easier working is. I forced my kids to upgrade from 7 to 10 after I did, simply because I enjoyed the Windows 10 experience much more. I haven't received any complaints from them about the switch.
My personal criticism of Windows 8 was that it tried to treat the desktop system like a tablet or a phone - focusing on running "apps" one at a time, maybe 2 if you're really bold. This is not how I - or even most people - use a desktop, especially at work. They fixed it a bit in Windows 8.1, but for 10, they really thought about making it the "best experience" on each device.
In general, I've been really positive on Microsoft since the new CEO started and the release of Windows 10, it's a good direction for the company as a whole.
(Also, a disclaimer, I recently started working there full time.)

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
Several people I know have done the MS-Windows10 fall upgrade to disastrous consequences. It's almost enough to make a person revert to Windows Vista.

I've upgraded everything to Windows 10 here. Except for the Monkey's old netbook which is stuck on XP. I had no problems beyond a few devices that needed their drivers reinstalled after the upgrade. No real improvements either that I have noticed.

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
I upgraded to Windows 10 at work. It is a pretty significant improvement over Windows 8 in terms of usability and performance. Boot time is faster and it seems to be generally more stable. Most importantly, I never have to deal with that fucking Metro UI again. After uninstalling some of the (many) useless live tiles and bloatware I can use the Start menu.
The upgrade from Windows 8 took SO LONG. Like, hours. Still worth it. And then last week or something it prompted me to install what I thought was a regularly scheduled update because it was rather cryptically named, but it turned out to be like a whole version upgrade. Version 1511, whatever that means. Anyway, that also took several hours. Because it doesn't tell you how big a given update is or give you a reliable progress indicator, I thought it had stalled a couple of times, until I googled it and found out that the update is a 4gb download.
Heh, also, Internet Explorer is replaced by the "Edge" browser, which appears to have almost no features whatsoever other than being reasonably fast. IE is still there for occasional pages that "require Internet Explorer."

I upgraded to 10 from 7 months ago. My one complaint: it now ignores my power settings, turning off the screen after one minute of inactivity no matter what I tell it I want. The only way to make it stop is to put it in presentation mode.

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
I managed to get Windows 10 working on my laptop. Never again. It may be a step up from windows 8, but is a big step down from windows 7. I suspect most of the windows 7 world wasn't ready for it. Microsoft's compatibility checker didn't check compatibility of much important -- certainly not video devices, and certainly not input drivers. This one just won the lottery, per se.
It crashes lots, mostly on boot. I had to disable 'fast boot' to get it successfully booting more than one time out of three. It keeps re-enabling that feature after updates. Sometimes it logs on in such a way that I can't click the start menu, and have to ctrl-alt-del into task manager for the shut-down option -- LOL, no, there is no shut down option in task manager any more. There is a 'log out' one which sometimes works, but just as often, I have to hard-power-off.
My Bluetooth driver pops up a red X error window every boot. After pursuing various upgrades, it seems this feature is there permanently, unless I feel like disabling bluetooth entirely. I might.
My trackpad does not have scrolling areas any more, or any way to calibrate it from drifting. There is no fix if my manufacturer doesn't make a win10 driver, which is doubtful, as my laptop was Vista sold with a free upgrade to 7.
The start menu is gone. The tile-based thing is a hollow echo with far less functionality. The chunky buttons take an enormous amount of space, and if I feel like using anything it doesn't show (lots and lots) I have to find it myself, by hand -- the safe, sanitized "search" doesn't generally cover app files it doesn't know already.
Windows explorer is gone. The file browser thing they have now is a hollow echo, slow to load, with half the functionality and three times the load time of anything previous.
Windows Calculator is a "trusted windows store application" now. Maybe that's why a 300mb video game loads faster than it. Is it net-loading, or just demanding that Windows Store components be loaded before it will run? I don't care, I just hope they're embarrassed. I would be.
Who ordered this shit? Who at MS looked at this and decided "Yes. This will define our OS for the next decade".

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
(posting again instead of doing more sneaky edits...)
"Control Panel" is hidden more deeply now. They can't kill it, but they really, really want to -- they have a new thing instead which knows what's best for you. Most special win10 options reside in there. It also pops up warnings of problems for you, mostly things neither it nor you care about or can solve.
Did I mention the ads? Built-in ads, built into the OS itself, for things like Microsoft Office. Last time they tried that was Windows 98, which MS got booed so badly for -- see the "push based advertising" flap -- that their second release of it included no ads at all. But this being the 21st century, they're now innocuous and acceptable, because what the hell, they're just the last adopters, it's not like they invented it.
Except wait, they did.
"old-fashioned" apps are slow to load, now. I take it they've redone the Windows API so many times now that "classic" apps no longer have any libraries in common with new ones. So a 16K executable I've been using since 1995 or so takes as long to load as Windows Calculator. (Which is slow.)

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
FUN POST-1511 MONDAY FACTS that I just found out on Monday while trying to do work:
1. All my touchpad gestures are re-enabled, somehow, even though I hate them.
2. The Synaptics app that used to let me change my touchpad settings (and disable gestures, for example) is not functional and just prompts me to uninstall it every time I try to open it.
3. Looks like the update forced a total reindexing, including Outlook. That should only take a couple of days when I can't search for stuff.

This works for that on 8, just keeps tapping a key every 59 s. I don't know about 10, it doesn't say it does.

Win 8 was horrible for the touch pad on a Dell 2in1. Tap was constantly opening things I didn't want, closing things I did, deleting for the hell of it. The damn thing was next to unusable until I turned tap off.

Yuuuup. I had turn all of that off. I use a wireless mouse for most of my tasks, but I occasionally still brush up against the touchpad while typing. The 1511 update re-enabled the SEND DRAFT E-MAIL NOW LOL touchpad gesture.

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
One thing that's annoying me and I've not fixed it yet is very frequent hard disk activity even when the PC is idle. It thrashes away for ten minutes or so, then goes quiet for maybe thirty seconds before starting over. It's not very intense activity and doesn't really impact on performance, but the hard disk in this PC is pretty noisy and it bugs me when I can hear it thrashing away for no obvious reason... The PC never did it when it was running Windows 7, and it still doesn't when it's running Ubuntu Linux. It 'only' has 4GB of RAM, but even when it's only running one or two simple apps and the task manager shows that there is plenty of free RAM, the disk is still noisy. Task manager shows that the disk activity is only 1% or so... but there shouldn't be *any* activity...

Re: What the fuck is up with Windows 10?
After an elaborate but ultimately random set of driver rollbacks and driver updates I managed to get the option to disable tap-to-click once again. I don't understand why a Windows 10 update would replace my OEM touchpad driver with a generic Windows touchpad driver (and then apparently a generic Asus touchpad driver that just grey out all the options). My co-worker started downloading 1511 some time this morning, and the download had been at 78% for about four hours when we went home for the day. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I noticed this too. That's a real power-saving no no if you're using a laptop, the disk will never spin down... And if it's writes, also a big no-no for solid state disks, which wear out fast from that kind of activity.

I am probably the last person I thought I'd see working at Microsoft, let alone shilling for it.
For now, I'm pretty positive on Windows 10 and MS in general, and it almost has little to do with the fact that I'm currently employed there. I had a contract job for the company that I disliked, but it was also around the time the new CEO started, and I could see the positive impact on the company, even if it didn't affect the job I was doing as much. I also upgraded to Windows 10 before I started full time, and I'd probably give the same advice then.
Not that 10 has been all sunshine and rainbows, but it's been at least as stable for me as Windows 7 on my desktop. (It doesn't hurt that my desktop is <2 years old).
