It is a “hollowed-out country,” “ill at ease with itself,” “deeply provincial,” engaged in a “controlled suicide,” say puzzled experts.
The same could apply to America - except, as they point out later on, no one's puzzled by partisan divides in America.

Quote:
Jan Techau, a German who has traveled extensively in England and ran Carnegie Europe, sees Britain as a tragedy.
Um no, it's a farce.

The phrase "controlled suicide" is used again later. Controlled by who, we wonder, not needing to wonder very much.

They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

The way the vote has been reported makes it look bad. But it's really a question of whether animal rights legislation belongs in the Brexit bill or elsewhere. Here's what Tory MP Zac Goldsmith tweeted, and other MPs have been quick to issue similar statements via Twitter or other media.

Zac Goldsmith on Twitter: "No, MPs did not vote that animals aren't sentient @Benfogle @domdyer70 @DeborahMeaden @sueperkins https://t.co/eQLz6plfa9"

Tony Blair confirms he is working to reverse Brexit | Politics | The Guardian

Quote:
“So when the facts change, I think people are entitled to change their mind.”

Blair was referring to the slogan on the Vote Leave battlebus, which said the UK sent £350m per week to the EU which could be spent on the NHS instead. The claim was widely dismissed as untrue because the figure took no account of the budget rebate, money never sent to the EU in the first place, or the cash returned in the form of EU spending in the UK.

The Battle of Brexit may be fought over the land border between the UK and the EU.

This morning: Helen McEntee, Ireland's Europe minister, says nope: Ireland: no go-ahead for Brexit talks to move on | Politics | The Guardian

Breaking news: Just in time for the go/no-go meeting with Michel Barnier, Theresa Maybe says yep: MEPs say UK has conceded on Ireland border in Brexit talks

So we have the following simultaneous conditions:
  • There will be continued regulatory alignment between the EU and NI, avoiding any "hard" border.
  • The UK will leave the EU and the customs union and have complete freedom.
  • The UK remains a whole, with GB and NI enjoying complete territorial and economic integrity.

George Orwell had a term for this kind of double thinking ... what was it again ...
