DuckDuckGo is good.

I make very little effort to replace other G**gle products. Would love to find a good online calendar thing.

I was specifically looking for an offline calendar for myself because I don't need anything that syncs or anything because I'm just not that busy or important. So the fact that I don't know of them doesn't mean there aren't any good online ones. There probably are and I just don't know about it.

FWIW neither am I, it's just that I recently discovered that I can reduce some of my anxiety if I don't keep everyday tasks like "flea treatment for the cat" or "get the recycling out" mulling over in the back of my brain. Much better to put a note into my phone as soon as I think of something, then forget about it until some device goes "ding!" My only calendar sharing is with my partner...

This is some good advice.

I just want everyone to step back and look at this big breaking story:

Google Keep now lets you indent items in lists

Isn't that exciting? Google Keep, an Android notetaking app, now allows you to indent list items. It lets you make indents. And someone wrote a whole article about it, and people in the comments have a lot to say as well. Because the Google note taking app now lets you make indents. You know, like you could do on a fucking VAX.

MOTHERFUCKERS.

GOD DAMNED MOTHERFUCKING SHITBALL MOTHERFUCKERS.

So Matlock and I have a Ting plan, where we're charged for our shared minutes, texts, and megabytes. Neither one of us uses our phones heavily or anything, so our usage is usually pretty minimal. And when it does go above, it's usually me doing it.

So imagine my shock when I looked at our usage today and Matlock's been using 25mbps a day for several days now! I do have his data turned on because our messaging app uses data, but for comparison, I only had 10mbps on mine this month so far. You will be shocked to learn that the excess usage was all Google Play Store.

I do have it set up only to update on wifi, but Matlock said he'd been getting notifications and maybe he clicked on them and let them download on mobile or something. Anyhows, this was also killing his battery, so he put it on the charger and wasn't anywhere near his phone for the afternoon.

So I looked again to see if I could figure out for sure that this was going to stop, and it's downloaded about 250mbps while it was sitting on the charger. In wifi range. With mobile updates turned off. Not only bumping us up to the next data price bucket, but almost to the one after that.

So I disabled all the major Google services on his phone and turned on his Restrict Background Data, and now he has an undismissable warning in his notifications telling him that background data is restricted, and if he touches it, it turns it back on again.

This is straight fucking bullshit. Fuck Google and fuck anyone who's OK with their shit.
