3D printing failures
Already posted this on Facebook, but I like to share....
So, I've been having a bit of trouble with the Cobalt Blue filament I ordered. I was printing out a bunch of stuff and not getting good results.
So, I started printing small cubes, for calibration, and the tops of the cubes are really sucking. I thought they might be interesting under the microscope, so...
These 2 are the messed up tops of the cube.
This is the side of the cube.
These 2 are the shape of constant width, and some printing issues I'm having.

Re: 3D printing failures
I have a friend who really likes blue. He would really dig these as wallpapers.

Creative Commons license, as long as you don't sell them, send them to your friend.
The pictures should be all linked to their Flickr page. If you can't download them at high enough resolution from Flickr, PM me and I'll send you a full size image.

Re: 3D printing failures
Well, that's some of the most impressive making lemonade out of lemons that I've seen for a while. Those are gorgeous! I'd print one and frame it if I had any space left on the walls of my living room.

Re: 3D printing failures
Not exactly failures, but I don't want to start a new topic.
When the printer I have is instructed to print "supporting material", it prints this odd lattice-like structure under the parts of the model that overhang.
This is at a higher magnification, 100X rather than 40X.
This 3d printer doesn't do very well unless I print a "raft" - basically a flat surface just slightly larger than the object. This is a defect of the software that comes with it, I shouldn't need to print a raft, but it helps iron out some of the printing quirks this printer has while starting up.
This is a small piece of the top of the raft. This is also at 100X

I don't know if this fits with your interests but I ran across a useful resource for 3D shape files if you happen to be interested in paleoanthropology.

I'll look it over to see if there's something I can print....

I've been looking online, and I saw a Jack Skellington one I want to print, but I have to change filament color, and I haven't. I haven't found anything else that really compels me for skull designs.

Re: 3D printing failures
Walgreen's had a sale on prints today so I ordered a poster of the fourth one of your 'failures'. I bought a frame and I will take a picture once I hang it. I'm waffling at the moment because it seems too close to the color of my living room so I feel like I need to either hang it in a different room or buy a bigger frame and mat it in white.

Re: 3D printing failures
Well, I finally got the 3D printer out again and working, thanks to the NASA created state-shaped pinhole camera.
I had an idea for a potentially interesting set of photos: simple steps at smaller and smaller intervals.
Well, the first didn't print very well - my printer does a really crappy job with thin prints, and then then I discovered the failure was much more interesting that the successful second.

Oh, I thought about orienting the picture that way, definitely.

Re: 3D printing failures
I got a good print of my little model this morning. It looks like I intended, but, it doesn't look quite so nice up close.
I suppose I should explain this. On the left are "steps" of height 0.25 mm, and on the left are "steps" of height 0.1 mm.
This is what it looks like (at a different angle) in OpenSCAD.

Re: 3D printing failures
Sometimes, I wish I would remember that I have 2 working microscopes, and they each have virtues.
Here's two more. This one is just of the 0.1 mm high, 1 mm wide steps:
and here's an exposure merged image of the same as above. This is so much better that I'm tempted to throw away the other.

That's what I like about you, mr specious. When you fail we still win.

Re: 3D printing failures
I switched my 3D printer to ABS filament, because I was trying to print something which I thought would benefit from the slightly more flexible plastic.
Well, even the ABS plastic doesn't hold well together when I get kind of irregular layers that aren't well fused together. Basically, my 3D printer still kind of sucks.

Re: 3D printing failures
When you 3D print in multiple colors, you can have the printer create a brim around the print where it discharges one color to load the next. It winds up looking like a little wall around actual print.
This is the brim from a gradient print I did.

Re: 3D printing failures
specious (or others), anybody have 3D scan and print capability? I'm considering if it's feasible to have an impossible-to-find replacement dial for my parents' 40 year old oven replicated, but have no idea what would go into it or what it would cost.

No 3d scanner, sorry. My printer is in a box as well. It was a victim of a "I must reduce the number of hobbies I have" phase.

Re: 3D printing failures
Oh well! There's a guy on Craigslist here, and a couple of universities have labs. I just need a student willing to misuse academic resources for me!

You might find a maker space and somebody looking for a project.
