You do know that thirty people can read the same horoscope and all of them will think it was written about them, don't you?

Welcome Jamie!

I will say that in terms of precognition I don't believe in astrology. But insofar as personality types I am not so certain. The time of year that one is born can have a great influence on what genes are expressed across species. Which is why the stars have nothing to do with it and as constellations have moved the signs remain the same.

I have always wanted to do a study in which astrologers are given the bare info that they require and psycologists are given the bare minimum they require to do a Myers-Briggs or Strong inventory of personality. A correlation can be drawn between the houses and the bianaries in MB especially.

I will say that this curiosity of mine in no way contradicts my worldview,

Hello. On break, so I don't have much time to post (using company computer against policy  )

Myers-Briggs is a very general personality test as is the MMPI and MMPI II. I don't like such tests because they have no regard for certain types of thought-processes (which I can go into if you wish this weekend).

My majors involved psych and soc and phil so this type of thing interests me greatly. I would be interested in reading the results of such a test. There are a lot of things that could act as causation in that test, and may even perhaps compromise it. A lot of things would have to be taken into consideration.

Nice to meet you.

Jamie

But Astrology, now that's reliable!

Evidence: You think psychology is a crock. It might not garner a criminal conviction, but it's enough for me.

Your move, creep. [/robocop]

Ah, but define crock.

Psychology is the study of assumptions and patterns, is it not? Is there any single piece of evidence "material" evidence - that would certify either astrology or psychology?

So then, lets travel the realm of absolute and relativity. I am willing to be you believe in absolutes. Am I correct?

Psychology is the study of of human mental processes and behavior, which are products of the brain.

And what is the brain but a collection of patterns and assumptions? Unless, of course, we have innate knowledge of absolute truth?

What are you talking about? The brain is a collection of human cells.

Psychology. While I appreciate your literal definition of the word itself, have you given thought to the concept of it? What is psychology? Is it not the seeking of behavioral and adaptive patterns of the individual mind? Patterns. One down, one to go.

Assumptions. Can any psychological theory be proven by means of material proof? No. Therefore, the only thing that anyone (psychologists) can go off of, is assumptions. Hypothesis. Assumptions.

Therefore, psychology is a collection of patterns and assumptions.

If that's crap, then perhaps we better tell those who coined the term psychology about it... that might help them in their discovery of the individual and everything associated with the individual.

Psychology is one of my majors.. by the way.

Jamie

Well, the patterns are easily found, so isn't it more about seeking the reasons those patterns exist?

Quote:
Assumptions. Can any psychological theory be proven by means of material proof? No. Therefore, the only thing that anyone (psychologists) can go off of, is assumptions. Hypothesis. Assumptions.
And in science, assumptions and hypotheses are tested and sometimes theories emerge. Proof is for mathematics, not science.

Psychology and neuroscience are starting to get together to try to conceive material evidence babies these days, and already they can see that the brain is physically altered in structure and function in patients with depression and PTSD, for examples. Evidence is being gathered and testing underway. Tests and evidences the coiners of the term couldn't even imagine.

So, for many, psychology is getting closer to being a physical science. However some, even many, psychologists choose to stay on the philosophical side, others go woo with it.

Your use of vague terms like "patterns and assumptions" to discuss the brain, rather than terms from biological science seems like you want to keep the discussion in the woo realm.
