The court ruled there's nothing discriminatory about a city's desire to ensure only C-students get to carry police badges.

IMPD says officer drank before crash | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

To summarize, this cop was driving drunk with his lights and sirens on, crashed into some people on motorcycles, killing one and seriously injuring two others (one is still in a coma, and the other has been in intensive care and will require multiple surgeries still), and:

1.) He wasn't blood tested until two hours after the crash
2.) He wasn't booked into jail at all
3.) The police initially chose to issue a statement officially blaming the victims
Quote:
"Several vehicles yielded and moved to the right shoulder. . . . However, three motorcycles were stopped in traffic in the left lane and did not move," officer Brian K. Dixon, an IMPD spokesman, said in a statement released shortly after the crash. "The officer slowed, braked and swerved trying to avoid colliding with the motorcycles, but was unable to do so."
That's just a lot of isolated incidents, though, I'm sure. Nothing systemic there.

Similar to lisarea's story although kind of old:

This speeding cop ran into and killed a ten-year-old boy at sixty-seven miles an hour two years ago. His punishment? Suspended for one day. The boy's family apparently received a $250,000 payment (I was unable to confirm whether this actually happened, although admittedly I didn't look very hard), but that's pretty paltry compensation for losing their son's life.

I don't know about this one, seems more to do with this jerk being a garden variety asshole instead of a cop. Frankly, I liked reading that his own department is gonna discipline him for being an asshole, especially in another jurisdiction.

I chalk this one to not FUCK-worthy.

Summary of a kerfuffle in Indiana over forfeiture. By law, seized assets are supposed to go into a fund for the schools--serving the dual purpose of enriching the schools, and of eliminating motivation for police to seize assets without good cause. But they've figured out ways around that, so police and prosecutors end up enriching themselves with seized assets.

Despite law, schools get little of assets seized from crime suspects | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

Oh, yeah, and also in Indiana, the police have apparently fucked up the case against the DUI cop:

This time, police have hit a new low | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

And, to end on a high note, this journalist just got a $99K settlement after this altercation with a stupid, violent police chief:

Photojournalist wins settlement after frightening altercation with police chief

How likely is it that it would have come to that if it weren't for the video?

To continue an examination of police corruption and civil rights violations in my home state of Mississippi and now that the grand jury indictments have been unsealed, look for this one to get even more exposure to the light of day:

Natchez officers indicted in attack

"Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said the men are still on the force, though they are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of their case. He would not comment on the charges."

In my view, any felony criminal indictment after a grand jury review by citizens would support an outright termination from employment. More than enough probable cause exists (imho) to do so by statute and should be an inherent element of a good internal general orders policy.

We'll see what the Chief does after he has a weekend to think about it.

Apparently, it is standard practice in the US military to continue to pay accused service men and women until trial, even if they are imprisoned.

Recently, a reporter for a local news agency was terminated after she was arrested on a drug charge after being one of several people inside a house being served with a search warrant for meth and cocaine.

The case against her was no true billed (not indicted) after a grand jury review, but the stigma remained so she moved out of state.

Police departments have more than criminal statutes that would cover (and justify, in my view) a termination or (at the very least) a resignation, depending upon the accusations and facts.
