Trump's company asked Panama president to help in hotel spat

U.S. President Donald Trump’s company appealed directly to Panama’s president to intervene in its fight over control of a luxury hotel, even invoking a treaty between the two countries, in what ethics experts say was a blatant mingling of Trump’s business and government interests.

What's so terrifying in all of this is that levels of corruption that -- just a year or so ago -- would have seemed all but unimaginable don't even trigger a raised eyebrow nowadays.

Previously-unimaginable levels of corruption are now considered normal.

I remember when Hillary Clinton was the "corrupt" one.

Because, like... people associated with her charity asked for diplomatic passports and then didn't get them. And she had a private server. And she gave paid speeches to many organizations, including a Wall Street firm. And she attempted to intervene on behalf of a Nobel Prize winner.

Unfortunately, there wasn't anything interesting for the NY Times to investigate regarding the Trump Foundation, so they needed to write many articles about the "clouds" surrounding the Clinton Foundation. (WaPo might have found a nugget or two during the campaign though.)

The Wire is evergreen in today's world:

The Nixon Speed Run website seems even more relevant than ever at this point, too. Or, as Bootsie over at LGM put it, "This year's speedrun of the Nixon Administration at AGDQ is amazing with all the new skips."

(For those not familiar with video game speedrunning, Awesome Games Done Quick is a twice-yearly event that features live speedruns of a number of popular video games to raise money for charity, most frequently Médicins Sans Frontières or the Prevent Cancer Foundation; they are currently the largest fundraising event for both charities and have raised some US$14.5 million since the first event in 2010. Skips are generally glitches in a game's programming or design that speedrunners exploit in order to complete games as quickly as possible.)

And, of course, another evergreen quote, slightly updated for more relevance to today's world:

"Look, forget the myths the media's created about the White House--the truth is, these are not very bright guys fucking idiots, and things got out of were never in hand." -Deep Throat (W. Mark Felt) in All the President's Men

Now, I won't be surprised if certain folks suggested that "liberal hysteria" about Russia or whatever is responsible for Trump's decision to significantly increase the scale of US attacks in Syria, and Assad's forces specifically. Hillary Clinton said something a year ago, and people aren't declaring that Putin and Assad are innocent of all charges, therefore all the liberals have been pushing for this.

Trump has a "non-interventionist mindset" after all. His instincts are not to get involved. He even said he wanted to withdraw a few weeks ago. On the other hand, I already pointed out that Trump had been getting advice from John Bolton all the way back in 2015 and through his campaign, and his praise of Bolton wasn't a secret. No liberals were pushing for Bolton, he appointed him because Trump likes him.

Also important for the Bolton stuff is... Fox News. Bolton went on Fox News a lot, and Trump watches Fox News a lot. In fact, some of Trump's recent actions seem like they might've been influenced by specifically Fox & Friends.

Trump's daily briefing (a.k.a. "Fox & Friends") warns him not to pull out of Syria - The Washington Post

Kilmeade added that Trump “wants Saudi Arabia to pay for our 2,000 troops [in Syria]. I'm fine with that because we are doing their work. But there is not a person around the president, I believe, that would support him pulling out the troops. It would be a disaster.”
Trump's erratic tweeting about Russia perfectly mirrored this morning's episode of Fox & Friends

Doesn't matter that Trump sometimes concludes that we're wasting our time in the Middle East - although I think that's as much about us not being able to simply "take the oil" like he wants and that we rarely get a clear "win" that he can trumpet about - he can be manipulated by others because he's an ignoramus and he has chosen to surround himself with people and listen to people who do like military intervention. As I've already gone on about. In general, it's a mistake to attribute any sort of coherent ideology to Trump regarding policy. Trump's lodestars are self-enrichment and ego-stroking, and you have to also take into account his toxic masculinity, obsession with "strength" and "weakness", near-total ignorance of most issues, impulsiveness and laziness, etc. This is more useful than expecting him to follow a coherent foreign policy approach.

Given the recent news coming out about Trump's lawyer and other developments in the Russia probe and corruption in his administration and Comey's revelations and so forth, one might want to consider Trump's motivations aside from just being an idiot who believes whatever he sees on Fox.

The thing about Trump is that he's constantly projecting. So when he says something like this, it's often because... it's what he'd do in that situation.

Coincidentally, Fox News suggested the very same thing to him...
Fox & Friends suggest Trump could bury Comey's book by bombing Syria – ThinkProgress

Anyway, seems far more likely to be an influence on Trump than what Hillary Clinton or liberal newspaper columnists or social media users might be saying.

Rather than telling Trump's opponents to change their rhetoric on the theory that Trump will take what they say very seriously but will wildly overreact to it because he's an idiot (hence saying that Russia's cyberattacks and propaganda efforts constitute an attack on the US means he will jump right to WW3 with Russia), it would be better to try to understand what Fox News is up to. Rupert Murdoch's views on Syria are almost certainly more consequential than Hillary Clinton's at this point.

Reading Comey's revealing (and damning) explanations for why he handled the Clinton case the way he did reminded me of this scene from Game of Thrones (a very good scene in the show, I think).

(This video and my post contain spoilers)

In this scene, Comey is most analogous to Orys I, the just, who nonetheless allows his evil brother to seize power.

But I can also see making an analogy between Comey and Ned Stark. It is perhaps an even better analogy. Ned Stark was easily manipulated by his sense of honor, to his downfall. But a crucial difference is that Comey was much more concerned with being perceived as honorable than Ned Stark*. Thus rogue elements in the FBI, Giuiliani, Jason Chaffetz, Trump and his ref-working about the election being rigged, etc. were able to manipulate Comey into doing things he might not have otherwise, because it was necessary to maintain his reputation of honor. They put him into a situation where his honor might be questioned if he did the right thing, and he responded exactly as they wanted him to.

*Ned allowed people to believe Jon Snow was his bastard, even though it sullied his reputation for honor. He also gave Cersei a chance to flee, but privately, an act which would likely not be publicly known and thus not enhance his reputation for honor. Comey would not have done either of those things, from what I can tell.
