Sanders held a campaign rally in Denver yesterday. The rally was supposed to take place in the Bellco Theater within the Colorado Convention Center, but it quickly outgrew the theater's 5,000-seat capacity and got moved to a larger hall in the Center. Over 11,000 showed up.

Word around the campfire is that the GOP has a ton of defamatory swill to dump on Jane Sanders, Bernie's spouse, in the event Bernie gets the Dem nomination. None of it appears to have any truth whatsoever, but as 2016 proved, truth is meaningless when such swill is directed toward a woman who opted for a career path other than "lukewarm bowl of nothing."

If he gets the nomination he will need an infantry battalion as personal security, that's what I'm thinking.

If only the honorable Mr Sanders were more popular or electable then he could maybe consider being the nominee.

Also a lol at how the dorks on the other side of the aisle have to attack the candidate's wife.

Every accusation is a confession. They don't trust or respect their own wives. But would be threatened by any criticism of them.

The centrists generally fear and hate the left more than they hate Donald Trump.
It's so weird how anonymous comments in Politico are all the proof chunks needs to make such strident claims.

Obama is basically going scorched earth against Sanders in his mind, despite the fact that he actually hasn't done anything.
What Obama Is Saying in Private About the Democratic Primary

Seems that that's not his plan. One anonymous source maybe doesn't prove Obama is conspiring with the DNC to kneecap Bernie after all.

(As an aside, this held up well, but Klob still has basically no chance.)

Wasn't expecting Bloomberg to do so well. Hopefully, tomorrow's debate makes him have to address his actual record instead of hiding behind slick ads. I expect it to mostly be everyone piling on Bloomberg, certainly Warren has been indicating that's her plan, but we'll see.

Debate tonight- Bloomberg qualified. Everyone else is sharpening their knives for the frontrunner Bernie Sanders, or for the fresh Billionaire meat. Bloomberg literally dropped one third of Billionaire Steyer's $1.5 billion net worth into this race in the past six weeks. You know, like we do in democracies.
Bernie was endorsed by MiJente yesterday.
I'm back home after doing volunteer work on the ground as an individual for the Sanders campaign Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and half of Monday. Then I was back at work for a ten hour shift at the University, which is permanently closing in April- 1500 people losing their jobs, and health care, including me.

I'll figure out what stays in Las Vegas and what I'll share after the Nevada Caucus this coming Saturday, but I will say I met and worked with people for whom I have the utmost respect and gratitude; I learned a ton and came back energized.

Voted Monday evening, not without a hitch.

The State Board of Elections - which is the first result when googling early voting locations here - published incorrect one-stop voting hours for the county board of elections office, located in the urban core in the largest or second largest county in the state. (State and county board offices are literally blocks away from each other. Who knows how accurate their info for other counties is.) So when we turned up at around 6, the building was locked and we had to drive to a different polling place. I tried to call and leave a voicemail, but the state board's voicemail box was full so I had to email them and cc political correspondents for various state/local media. At least that one error was fixed Tuesday morning.

Curious to know how many folks relied on the list, got to the office and found it closed and just gave up. In retrospect I was probably kind of a dick to the oblivious county employee who shooed us away but I was also p. angry in the moment.

But, alas, instead, Bloomberg, with his authoritarian impulses and his record of racism, sexism, and violence, has decided to be the turd in the Democratic punch bowl, plopping into the election to ruin the thing for everyone who's been there. Already in second in national polling, with way too many people who should know better accepting his apology for Stop and Frisk, he has a real chance at the nomination. And way too many people are champing at the bit for the Democrats to have their own douchebag billionaire to face down the worse douchebag "billionaire" in the White House. Jesus, you know how fucked a nation that makes us?

Bloomberg is kind of a weird, fussy man. I'm not sure his appearance on stage is a good thing for his campaign.

I didn't watch much of the debate, but what I saw and what the clips on Twitter showed me was Warren going for the jugular - not just Bloomberg, but especially Bloomberg. I liked it.

Warren tore Bloomberg to shreds, and got some good hits in on the other candidates, including one or two on Bernie. Certainly anyone watching has to be thinking about what she would do to Trump on a debate stage.

Buttigieg and Klobuchar tore each other apart, but I think Buttigieg probably had the better night. He might've gone a little too far on the AMLO thing tho, which gave an opening for Warren to defend Klobuchar without being too nice.

Biden seemed like maybe he came to play at first, and participated in the Bloomberg pile-on, but he couldn't keep the steam up for the whole debate. Not his worst, but not his best.

Bloomberg had basically no good moments at all. His best moment was his closing speech, but even that was delivered without passion. I love how many people thought that letting Bloomberg into the debate was somehow a conspiracy to help Bloomberg. If anything, the way every other candidate was laying into him made it look more like a conspiracy to destroy him.

I thought Bloomberg would go harder after Bernie, but even though it was a stupid line, the thing about Bernie being the most famous socialist in the country who owns three homes... kinda landed? Not because it's a good point, but because Bernie totally took the bait. When you're saying that you "like thousands of other Vermonters, have a summer camp" it seems like you're saying owning a second home is normal or not a rich person thing. I think most people think of owning a second (much less a third) home as not normal. But there was no reason to be saying that at all.

Bernie could've said that he's lived a fairly modest life for a member of Congress, which comes with a healthy salary, but he only made any millions after writing a bestselling book. A nice opportunity for a general election pivot to say "I don't begrudge people for ever making any money, even a million dollars if they create something wonderful, it's about how you make that money and a system that is rigged for the 1% and corporations. Wall Street banks make money charging outrageous interest and fees to working people, [insert attacks on other exploitative industries], I've never said someone making a few million dollars off a popular book is the problem."

I do wonder how Bernie might handle the kinds of attacks Trump will make on him. He can handle the attacks on his policy for being too far left. Trump will attack him personally, and I feel like Bernie doesn't react well to those kinds of attacks.

Other than that, Bernie did pretty well, some solid hits on Bloomberg.

I just got a mailer from Bloomberg's campaign. It doesn't even ask for money, which actually makes it worse. Now I can't send back an empty envelope to do my part in making his worse-than-useless campaign cost him even more money. :curses:

I can't even describe how much I love the fact that entertainment god Dick van Dyke is alive and kicking. Here he is, featured in a Sanders spot.

So I was part of the Strip Caucus team in Nevada. What that looked like was almost entirely an organizing model pulled straight from union organizing skills; not surprisingly the team leader is a labor organizer who organized workers at the Satellite Caucuses in Iowa.

6:30 AM briefing, team assignments
7:30 -9:30 canvassing at one or more Casino locations- talking with people as they leave employee parking and head into work, or coming out- at the shift changes. These are brief intense conversations, often in Spanish, asking people if they like Bernie Sanders, if they are planning to caucus, and then giving them more information, getting contact numbers- walking with a person. De-escalating responses from security, or from police, or from Trump supporters, or from Culinary Union staffers. Often getting kicked from properties by security teams.
9:45 Field office debrief; contact numbers into the spreadsheet and text follow-ups, with phone call follow-ups a few hours later. Either break for lunch and regroup and/or scout Casino and Hotel properties for canvassing: where are the employee parking and entrances, are there public places to stand, what's security like, when are shift changes. I did a fair amount of scouting. If you had time and no assignments we were also phone banking out of the field office, preparing materials for the next canvass, etc.
2:30PM briefing and field assignments
3:30PM-6:30PM or later canvassing shift changes, same as first round.
7:00PM debrief; go get some food and go to bed because we're up tomorrow at the field office at 6:30AM to go again.

Other team members were canvassing the mosques; volunteers from different ethnic minorities- for example Ethiopian and Bosnian- were here reaching out to these communities, directly in their own language, to engage people in this fight. Spanish-speaking volunteers gained access and invites to a soccer tournament.

As the week progressed, that's spread-sheeting and big-boarding all the Strip Caucus sites, who we have as contacts that are organizing their coworkers to caucus, training for the caucus, building those internal teams, inoculating against Culinary Union misinformation.

Organizationally, Bernie understood the importance of the Strip Caucus as it is 2% of the entire caucus vote for Nevada. No other candidate pursued these votes- primarily cast by Latina housekeepers, Latino maintenance staff, immigrant and working class folks.

Here is the difference between what other people are doing and what Bernie Sanders' campaign is doing. We knocked over 500,000 doors in Nevada- which is pretty much all the doors. We came to people directly and asked them to stand together for a better world, and told them what we truly believe- that their voices are important and matter and that a better world is possible when we stand and fight. When a worker told us they were too young or not a citizen we told them regardless, if you believe in this message, then your voice is important in telling your coworkers who can vote that they can caucus for Bernie Sanders.

No other campaign has this energy, no other campaign has this dedication. I met people from Australia and the UK here to volunteer for Bernie Sanders. Here's three teachers from Tuscon, who drove to Nevada to door knock for Bernie Sanders. Here's a mini-bus full of nurses from California, here to knock doors for Bernie Sanders. Here's a guy who drove 25 hours from Louisiana. In every primary state so far between 1,700 and 2,000 volunteers have come from out-of-state-Bernie journeys, above and beyond any paid staff on the ground- and said let me help do the work.

On the ground in Nevada, I never saw a single person from any other campaign. Most people we talked to had only heard from the Sanders campaign.

The ground game is the difference, and it is unstoppable, and this is why we're now fighting for Bernie to win the majority of delegates to prevent a brokered convention. I believe that Bernie Sanders will go on to resoundingly defeat Trump in what will be one of the highest turnout elections in our history.

Further I believe that this ground organization and the organizing model will be vital in the push to implement Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and the rest of Sander's agenda once he is in office. This is the difference. This is worth fighting for, and I am humbled and proud all at once to be shoulder-to-shoulder with people doing the real work and fighting for a better world together. It is energizing and inspiring.

Like Bernie said in the pretty chaotic debate last night, in 50 polls run so far he beats Trump head-to-head in 47 of those polls. Bernie has broad support across many demographics. If he wins the nomination, the "us" part of "Not me, us" will bring in people who usually don't vote, we will absolutely expand the electorate and win.

The Democratic Debate last night in South Carolina was marked in how poorly it was moderated as candidates argued and jockeyed for position on stage; the fact that most of those candidates on the stage need huge wins to maintain viability in the race of course being a factor. A number of people in the media and online pointed out the surprising loud booing at the mention of how many billionaires support Biden and Buttigieg and wild cheering at milquetoast dialogue from Bloomberg; perhaps relating to the $1,750 to $2,300 ticket price for this event.

Quite a scrum, knives out.

McSweeney's- America Must Not Become Socialist, Lest we Abandon What Makes our Country Awful
Quote:
If America embraces “Venezuelan-style” socialism, a term we all know the meaning of that I will refuse to explain, make no mistake — America will no longer be the land of the free that all of us wealthy white people know and love. Just take a second and think about it: healthcare that woefully lags behind the rest of the world, crumbling infrastructure, a corrupt and incompetent electoral process. And now, stop thinking about America, and start thinking about what it’s like in Venezuela. Under socialism, Americans might have to ration their medicine — and not just their insulin, like we currently do. Americans will be forced to spend hours waiting in long lines at the hospital, instead of spending that time with your family, huddled around the phone with a Kaiser Permanente customer service rep, as you try to understand why you were billed three grand for an x-ray.

Americans need to understand that a socialist government, while sounding good in theory, would ultimately result in totalitarianism. A socialist government could use its power to spy on its citizens, listening to their phone conversations, reading their email, even watching them through their laptop cameras. In America, our intelligence agencies can only do those things if they lie to Congress about it first. Our Founding Fathers created this illusion of checks and balances to keep every facet of our government equally unaccountable. If that feels undemocratic or authoritarian to you, know that capitalism allows for private tech companies, like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft, to sell you the home assistants that make our surveillance state function. A socialist government would merely invade your privacy, forgoing all that juicy profit! The American free-market creates competition, and competition pushes these tax-dodging corporations to be better, so they can do worse by you, the public. And as we all know, private industry is far better at infringing upon your rights than the government.

Well, I was talked into watching the debate last night.
One conclusion:
Klobuchar will never make it. She was WAY too polite.
