I believe about half of the "fireworks" out in my "neighborhood" are in fact gun shots or anvil shooting. It's either a bunch of yahoos that don't know their nearest neighbors are only hundreds of feet away or it's an unadvertised Civil War reenactment.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
My neighbor has a small blackpowder canon. He sets it off when the local football team scores a touchdown, random occasions with guests, and on New Years eve.
My Brother in Law's family has one they load with ball bearings and blast stuff across their lake.
My Father in Law's neighbor has a civil war canon and the sheriff made him stop shooting it off because people's pictures fell off their walls. And it's loud.
So canon fire is not something unheard of around the 4th of July and other special drinking occasions.
I know quite a few people with canons now that I think about it.

Okay, what they're firing off might be artillery.

They use these babies where I come from, modified milk containers. They use carbide and water which makes ethylene gas. Very flammable/explosive.

Well...at least they aren't firing off selected sanctioned scriptures.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
They were firing off artillery at the patriotic concert I attended on the fifth, but only during the 1812 Overture. I'm not quite sure why a piece about a conflict that had nothing to do with America always shows up in patriotic concerts, but I assume it's because we like to hear things blow up. Or, you know, our knowledge of history is so bad we think it's really about the War of 1812.
Doesn't explain The Magnificent Seven theme, though. That one really baffled me. At least I got my Sousa, even if I did have to wait until the very end during the fireworks.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
You did better than I did. At Cal Expo, it was all overwrought country music, all the time. A few days later I discovered that July 4th is (coincidentally? ) National Country Music Day, to which I was like NO! You inbred motherfuckers do not own patriotism, no matter how hard you have convinced yourselves that you do.
Eight of the 10 songs were about soldiers or veterans. Seriously, I counted. They had dumbass lyrics like "would you make the sacrifice?" and I was like "MOTHERFUCKER, WOULD YOU?!" Or would you just cash in on the idea of it and sleep on a pile of money in your tacky McMansion in Nashville, all the while convinced you are a true patriot? Where were you when they built the ladder to heaven?
Seriously. For Christ sake I am a fucking veteran and it made me hate the show. It made me hate the 4th of July fireworks show. There is so much more to love about America and what's left of her freedoms than military service. It's not fucking Veteran's Day. Or Memorial Day. Or Armed Services Day. Or the Army's goddamn birthday or any other fucking shit. Just fucking stop.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
The only thing I hate worse than country fucking music is morning fucking traffic. And that's because I can't turn off morning fucking traffic. I grew up rural with cowboy boots and jeans and hate country fucking music.
If country fucking music becomes some sort of test for Americanism, I'm fucking leaving.
Fuck you country fucking music.
PS. Fuck.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
You probably would have been very annoyed at my concert, ES. During the Armed Forces Medley they had the service members of each branch stand as their theme was played, and then re-enactors wandered through the crowd and shook their hands. They also all stood and saluted when the re-enactors walked down the aisle with their flags.
I had no idea what the 4th of July was like in a red state.

Re: Responsible Gun Owners Thrad
ROFLMAO...
The NRA will not be allowing 'operational' guns on the floor of the national convention this week in Nashville. In order to take a gun in to the convention, the firing pin must be removed.
NRA Bans ˜Operational" Guns At NRA Convention For Security Reasons – INCISITY
O my dawg...the NRA is going to abridge the 2nd Amendment rights of their very membership...at their own gathering. Hey...Maybe they think that the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to own and carry a firearm, but the firearm need not function at all.
Aw, geez....And I was hoping for a live ammo demonstration of the newly licensed and trained blind shooters from Iowa. Now, the NRA seems to think that no guns is the best guns....at least at their convention. What are they gonna do if some 'bad guy' shows up?

Guns Don't Kill People - Lawyers, Guns & Money
As Lemieux says:
Quote:
The ability of people involved in “domestic disputes” to acquire handguns the very next day is the only thing standing between us and tyranny.

And how would things have gone if the shoe were on the other foot, you ask? Glad you asked.
Why Is the NRA Ignoring This 14-Year-Old Girl Jailed for Shooting Her Abusive Father?
There is a lengthy pattern of this kind of thing happening, actually, and the Love, Joy, Feminism piece goes into excruciating detail about it. (Note that I got the link to this via the comments of the LGM piece, which are excellent.)

" The Atheist Pig" has a good response for those who insist that mass shootings are because "God was banned from society" (a claim I hear with distressing frequency from various acquaintances and relatives):

What a ridiculous reason anyway. 'God' was banned from society all over Europe way more than in the US.
