Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
In another blow to libertopia, US to phase out for profite private prisons calling them less safe and effective than government run prisons. Because who would have thought profiting off the incarceration and forced labor of others would turn out to be a bad idea?

Ugh, that video calls him a targeted individual. That is not the same thing as a sovereign citizen.
Targeted individuals are mostly people with paranoid delusional disorders who, thanks to the internet, have been collaborating on a kind of grand unified theory of their collective paranoia, involving what they call 'mass stalking.'
It's really really sad, and I am not linking to it, and I am nervous even mentioning it, because that's how it spreads.

'What is Aleppo?': Gary Johnson bungles question about Syrian war | US news | The Guardian
Quote:
Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson appeared clueless about the Syrian crisis on Thursday morning, asking “What is Aleppo?” during a television interview.
Mike Barnicle, during an interview on NBC’s Morning Joe, asked Johnson: “What would you do if you were elected, about Aleppo?”

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
Johnson, being a Libertarian, doesn't need to know anything about other countries because he isn't going to be mucking about in foreign affairs or foreign adventures. In keeping with Libertarian principles he believes that all those foreign people have the right to go to hell in their own way without interference from the United States of America.
In any case, wasn't Aleppo one of the Marx brothers?

"Who's Harriet Tubman?"
-Gary Johnson, soopergenius.
ETA: According to Johnson, it also doesn't matter that global warming is happening because the sun will swallow up the earth millions of years from now. I am not exaggerating. #FeelTheJohnson

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
Johnson knows the stuff he needs to know.
How does he know that the stuff he knows is the stuff he needs to know?
He knows that the stuff he knows is the stuff he needs to know because it is the stuff he actually (or virtually) knows.
Ipso facto ergo propter huffandpuff Q.E.D.

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
Gary Johnson unable to name his favourite world leader. Or, apparently, any living leader at all. Apparently Bill Weld was able to name Shimon Peres (who is not alive) and the last name of Vincente Fox (but not his first name).

I'm not sure if that's better or worse than a Palin-esque "Oh, you know... All of them."

I'm not running for President, but I'm fairly well informed and I couldn't think of someone off the top of my head.
But the first person I thought of that I a) knew the name and b) actually liked was Justin Trudeau.

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
One consolation from this election is that I can mock the Libertarians for not being able to crack 5% even this year.
It's not a great consolation, but...

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
A Libertarian Utopia Was Actually Tried—and It Failed Miserably | Alternet
Quote:
Unfortunately for Oliver, Australia did not take kindly to a privately owned principality being created in its neighborhood and pressured Tonga, being the closest country to Minerva, to act.
Taking up the challenge was King Tāufa’āhau Tupou IV, the heaviest monarch in the world, weighing in at over 440 pounds. On June 21, 1972, he led an expeditionary force to invade the Principality of Minerva. Without an army or navy to call on, the king recruited a five-man convict work detail to undertake the invasion and, to add gravitas to the expedition, a four-piece brass band played the Tongan national anthem from on-board the royal yacht Olovaba to inspire the troops. Taking courage, when he saw that Minerva was unoccupied, the king decided to personally lead his force. Once the tide was out, the king went ashore. After tearing down Minervan flag, he read aloud a proclamation of sovereignty. The reef now belonged to Kingdom of Tonga.

Re: Dispatches from Libertopia
In the meritocratic utopia of venture capitalism, the unstable, incautious but highly charismatic nutjob who persuades capitalist ubergenuises to overvalue his company by multiple orders of magnitude, then pilots the whole mess into the shitter in a blaze of commingling, self-dealing and related chicanery is punished swiftly and decisively with a $1.7 billion payout plus $185 million in annual consulting fees.

The Wework saga is demonstrative of the bullshit level of speculative literature capitalism; we describe to you why this company is worth billions, plenty of graphics but no data required! Much like Tesla and Uber are money pits that have never been profitable, or holy shit the whole Theranos debacle.
