A blast that rocked a police station in southeast Damascus on Friday was caused by a seven-year-old girl carrying a belt of explosives, Syrian media reported.

The explosion in the bustling Midan neighbourhood of the Syrian capital wounded three police officers, said the Al-Watan daily, which is close to the government.

“A seven-year-old girl entered the police station, carrying a belt that was detonated from afar,” the paper posted on its Facebook page.

A police source told Al-Watan that she had appeared lost and asked to use the bathroom when the explosives went off.

So they sent her in there and blew her up. She probably wasn't even aware that it was an explosive belt. :deepsigh:

Maybe I should throw all this in the Syria thread, but I can't be bothered to look it up:

There's more propaganda than news coming out of Aleppo this week | The Independent

Quote:
It has just become more dangerous to be a foreign correspondent reporting on the civil war in Syria. This is because the jihadis holding power in east Aleppo were able to exclude Western journalists, who would be abducted and very likely killed if they went there, and replace them as news sources with highly partisan “local activists” who cannot escape being under jihadi control.

The foreign media has allowed – through naivety or self-interest – people who could only operate with the permission of al-Qaeda-type groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham to dominate the news agenda.

The precedent set in Aleppo means that participants in any future conflict will have an interest in deterring foreign journalists who might report objectively. By kidnapping and killing them, it is easy to create a vacuum of information that is in great demand and will, in future, be supplied by informants sympathetic to or at the mercy of the very same people (in this case the jihadi rulers of east Aleppo) who have kept out the foreign journalists. Killing or abducting the latter turns out to have been a smart move by the jihadis because it enabled them to establish substantial control of news reaching the outside world. This is bad news for any independent journalist entering their territory and threatening their monopoly of information.

More on fake news:

Quote:
We are witnessing the rapid death of the ‘western’ mainstream media, over Russia, Trump and Syria. It has not just shot itself in the foot, which it has done many times before, but now has put a bullet through its head and what passes for its brain.

This is not homicide but suicide. Here are recent milestones on the way to the media’s end times:

1. Over Russia, the repetition of Obama and Clinton’s lies that Russia interfered in the elections. They have no evidence at all despite what the Washington Post, the New York Times, the London Guardian and countless other ‘news’ sources are trying to tell you.

2. Over Trump, by mounting the most vicious campaign ever directed against an American political candidate. You don’t have to like Trump, you can even hate him, to see what they are up to. The vilification began when he announced his candidacy for the Republican primaries, and continued to build up from there, reaching a near-hysterical fever pitch during the last stages of the presidential campaign. At the same time the media protected Clinton, effectively throwing itself behind her campaign. It was so blatant it probably did her more harm than good. It failed because the public already knew what the media was trying to hide. The liberal media has had a collective nervous breakdown and has joined the Stein-Clinton-Obama campaign to derail Trump even before he is inaugurated. This is a shameful and shameless performance by people calling themselves journalists. They are, but only in the Goebbels school of journalism.

3. Over Syria, by telling lies for five years, capped off with the torrent of untruths told about Aleppo at the moment of its liberation. This grotesque misreportage is one of the greatest propaganda barrages we have ever seen and that includes the lies told over Iraq, Libya, Iran and of course – endlessly – over Israel and Palestine. Newspapers holding themselves as beacons of liberal opinion have turned out to be no more than stalking horses for governments engaged in yet another campaign to destroy an Arab government. Like Trump, you can dislike Bashar, dislike the Syrian system, and support the need for reform without allowing yourself to be sucked into this vortex of dishonesty put out by a media accusing everyone else of publishing fake news.

Okay, you have a point there, but on Russia they all monger war based on very little reliable information and on Syria they are all spewing propaganda on a scale not seen since WW2.

So basically Obama, Clinton, Harry Reid, the DNC, all the Democrats, the CIA and other intelligence agencies, are lying about Russia?

The evident connections between Wikileaks and Russia, Trump's former campaign manager and Putin, the obvious preference of Putin and his allies for Trump, and Trump's unending praise for Putin, Trump calling for Russia to hack Clinton's emails... all mere coincidences?

Somebody hacked the DNC and Podesta's emails, and our position is to be the same as Trump's... Could've been some 400 lb loser in New Jersey?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Clinton and Obama in particular are consistently ranked as two of the most honest politicians on fact-checking websites. And, not to nit-pick or anything, but the CIA and other intelligence agencies are not politicians.

If Russia interfered in our elections, that would be an act of war, and there is strong evidence to suggest that is the case beyond the say-so of politicians and intelligence agencies. The circumstantial evidence erimir pointed out is pretty difficult to argue with. I'm not saying that we should go to all-out war with Russia, mind you. I'd be ok with simply crashing their major Internet infrastructure or draining Putin's bank account or some other acts of cyber-sabotage, but something should be done.

That just means they lie LESS. I've seen both of their lies on Israel/Palestine and Syria and there are whoppers there.

Ok, but for Russia's involvement in our election to be a lie, the entire Democratic Party and basically all of our intelligence agencies would have to be in on a conspiracy, and the many odd occurrences above would have to be mere coincidences. It violates Occam's Razor to believe that, because it would require an incredibly sophisticated conspiracy and coincidences that defy belief. Conspiracies are difficult to pull off effectively if they involve too many people, and this would involve a ton of people. The simplest explanation is that Russia really did interfere with our elections, so it's probably the correct one.

Even if that were true, and the Russia claims were completely fabricated and coordinated, the second point is just bullshit.

Take the Russia part out entirely. Let's say that never happened. Let's even take Hillary Clinton out of the equation. Let's say he was running against a ficus and Russia didn't care one way or the other.

He's still a compulsive liar. He's still a con artist. He's still wildly incompetent at virtually every aspect of the job. He's still too arrogant to admit that he doesn't know what he's doing, or to listen to anyone who does. He's still a violent, stupid, dangerous person who shouldn't be trusted with the key to a gas station toilet, much less with launch codes.

And the media was far too easy on him. They should have recognized and treated his candidacy as a serious threat from the beginning. Their tendency to rely on wacky little clickbait stories about angry tweets and celebrity feuds drew attention away from the more serious threats he presents. To the average low information voter, the coverage of Clinton tended to at least sound like they were serious charges, whereas Trump's could have some across as all sort of frivolous charges that he was hurting people's feelings.

The fact that that guy thinks the coverage of Trump was unfair and coverage of Clinton was all positive kinda harms his credibility.

I don't know what to think about Aleppo and Syria, and either way I'm not sure the U.S. has any good options to intervene anyway. But it's certainly possible that U.S. officials are being misleading about Syria but not lying about Russia. There's a more plausible explanation for the opposing narrative than there is on the Russia stuff.

It's also the case that there are Republicans, who would have little incentive to lie about Russia in this instance since it undermines their own president-elect, have made statements that Russia hacked the DNC and RNC.

Ok, maybe you are right and there is actual evidence for the hacking. Maybe I have become too cynical about the Democrats because of the disinformation shitstorm on Syria.

I mean Obama saying with a straight fucking face that 'The Assad regime cannot slaughter it's way to legitimacy' is like trying to go for the worldwide chutzpah record when he is supporting the Afghan, Libyan, Iraqi and Somali regimes slaughter their way to legitimacy and Saudi Arabia slaughtering it's way to the Yemeni and Bahraini goverments' legitimacy.

:giggle::giggle::giggle:
Seriously?

The 'vilification' began long before the primaries, such as when he was under investigation for racial discrimination, or for illegal money handling, or for running a scam university, or... the list goes on and on. The author either has done no research or is extremely biased.

If anything the 'death of western journalism' came when all sides are assumed to be equal, when Hillary's emails were given equal weight as having a history of fraud and being under multiple investigations for fraud, which then included paying off government officials to not prosecute. When a compulsive liar was caught red handed, on tape, lying to people's faces not once or twice but a half a dozen times in ways that were obvious to a small child, and the news media said "now we must fairly cover the faults of both candidates." as if they were equally liars.

Trump gamed the system that the right wing propaganda media has been building for years. To seem 'fair and balanced' media forced themselves into portraying them as equals. To attack Trump as he should have been attacked gets you labeled 'liberal news media' so we were left with either media portraying Hillary as corrupt as Trump, or Trump as honest as Hillary when the two aren't comparable. Leaving people to shrug off the differences as "well they are both shit" when comparing a sack of fertilizer to a burst pressurized sewage main left to shoot a 20ft geyser for 3 straight days after a free all you can eat taco bell and tequila weekend.

See this for instance:
Quote:
“To the jihadists of the so-called Islamic State, our fire will soon reach downtown Raqqa and by then you won’t be able to escape,” the SDF said in a hair-raising statement last Monday. “This is the final call: either surrender to the Syrian Democratic Forces or die.”
Syrian Democratic Forces capture new areas west Raqqa amid ISIS retreat - ARA News

is almost word for word what the Syrian army said about Aleppo rebels. Of course that was all over the media and it was supposed to be announcing a 'genocide'. How much do you think we will hear about this 'hair-raising statement'?

One of the many, many extreme right parties we have plans to outextreme the others by starting a war on the War on Christmas because supermarkets are talking about 'feestdagen' (literally party days, so holydays whithout the Holy) instead of Christmas. Of course they only do it so they can throw Sinterklaas, Christmas and New Year's Eve on a pile and don't have to change their windows every week, but who needs facts when it's War on War on Christmas?! They failed to notice though that one big department store chain has been calling Easter eggs Spring eggs for years.
