Given that the English speaking Americas insist on doing things a little bit different from the rest of the Anglosphere, one might suggest there still be some sort of standardization in terminology. Take 'aluminum' (Aloominum) and 'aluminium' (All you mini um). For consistency's sake one would expect 'yallminium'. I look forward to this modest suggestion's implementation.

This following thrad is specifically about alt Reich recruiting technique but it really also describes 419 scams, Scientology, and any other abusive community. So, science?

Mister Happy Die Happy on Twitter: "NOBODY is talking about how the online depression community has been infiltrated by alt-right recruiters deliberately preying on the vulnerable.

There NEED to be public warnings about this. 'Online pals' have attempted to groom me multiple times when at my absolute lowest."

Americans shouldn't be satisfied with shortening the pronunciation of just one element, "Aloominum": this shows a lack of ambition on their part. Why not work through the whole periodic table? For the ones before Aluminium, they will struggle to shorten Boron, Carbon, Fluorine, and Neon, but most are ripe for abbreviation:

Hydgen, Heelum, Lithum, Bereelum, Nitegen, Oxgen, Sodum, Magnum, ...

I'm sure you get the idea. Think of the time savings when discussing Neodymium magnets.

I've always wondered why Brits are so insistent on pronouncing "aluminium" while dropping second'ry syllables almost everywhere else.

There are more -ium elements. The real question is why we Brits haven't changed the the oddballs to match the general pattern. Platinium would be much better.

I was buying a set of knives that were a steal alloy that had Molybdenum in them. The salesman couldn't pronounce it correctly even after I told him how to say it.

I've done both, for science, of course. When I was about six years old, I was out playing in my great-grandfather's auto salvage yard. In one of the old derelict cars, I poked the cigar lighter in. A few moments later, it popped out. It was winter, and I could not feel the heat from it, so I touched my tongue to it. The second-degree burn I received proved that a 12-volt cigar lighter was in fact connected to a power source, probably a battery still in the broken rusted-out carcass of an automobile. The power outlet test came about six years later, when I stuck a straightened paper-clip into a power outlet to see what would happen. What happened was a fuse blowing. Fortunately, I was old enough to know how to change out a fuse.

Yes, kids a fuse, not a breaker. I am old.

In the not a surprise category:

Scientists have established a link between brain damage and religious fundamentalism

Going to into the article, I was not entirely sure which causality direction they were going to go for. "Fundies beat up their kids causing brain damage" wouldn't have surprised me.

Quote:
Religious beliefs can be thought of as socially transmitted mental representations that consist of supernatural events and entities assumed to be real.
Not the first formulation I'd have expected. Not wrong, but I wonder how many committee edits that went through.

Quote:
cognitive flexibility and open mindedness present a challenge for fundamentalists.
The most not a surprise claim in the article.

Notably absent from this write-up:
  • effect size and significance for brain damage in terms of affecting those personality/cognitive characteristics
  • how those personality/cognitive characteristics are distributed among the general population
  • how common such brain damage is among the general population, or how much cognitive inflexibility/lack of openness can be attributed to brain damage
  • and by extension how much variation in fundamentalism in the general population can be explained by brain damage

I'm guessing that with that information, you would not conclude anything close to "fundamentalism is brain damage".

But maybe we're still a step closer to finding a cure for fundamentalism :P

On one hand, yeah I think we've all been guessing that.
On the other, I think it takes a bit more than that to get all the way to religious fundamentalism, vs say general fundamentalism on any ol topic vs just being a dick.

The prefrontal cortex is still a bit of a mystery and we don't know as much about it as other areas of the brain. What does seem to be processed there is the ability to see and feel things from another person's point of view. It's possible the logical empathy of others emotions is worked out here as well. Like a step above mirror neurons, not just, 'they feel sad so I feel sad for them to better connect me to their emotion', but 'their partner just yelled at them and stormed off, now they are being angry at me, I understand being in similar situations and am feeling their frustration... etc.' There also seems to be a large inhibitory area there as well, so it's possible that when people say they have a thought of something but a bit of them says 'nah' that's close to the truth, and damage to that area gives rise to impulse control issues.

Or in short, people with certain prefrontal cortex damage become ridged, mean assholes. But not all people. Some with other types, especially if only on one hemisphere act just fine. Development in this region advanced quite a lot in primates and humans so research is lagging behind compared to motor areas of the brain.
