Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Tasha (or Soft Kitty as we briefly considered renaming him) disappeared for a couple of days, and I kind of figured we were shot of him until he showed back up last night in the middle of the night howling his brains out to be let inside. I let him in and fed him (he ate with much gusto!) but he wouldn't stop yelling and it was the middle of the damn night so I tossed him back outside.
Then this morning by the light of day, I discovered all kinds of horrible wounds on him! I don't know what kind of shit he got into in the last couple of days, but it must have been pretty intense. As bey sagely noted, it's hard on the street for an orphan.
Graphic photos enclosed. (clickable for even more graphicness!)
I think his new name needs to be Hard Kitty.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
the Orange Kitty got put to sleep last week. I knew she hadn't been feeling well for a bit but I came home from work and she had a huge mass in her neck, she could barely breathe and couldn't move her head. Didn't think all the invasive procedures to keep her alive for a few more months was worth it. She's underneath the bird feeder now.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
We have a slipper thief in the household. Unlike shoe thefts of the past, these are not chewed. Instead it is a strange manifestation of puppy OCD. The perpetrator cannot stand to see two slippers laid side by side and must carry one to the opposite side of the house. The reasoning is inexplicable but the behavior undeniable.*
Contra is currently searching high and low for one. While walking through the front bedroom, he turned to Dante and asked, "Boo, have you seen my slipper?"
Dante, who had been laying on the ottoman in front of the window, raised his head and gave the most indignant grumfle groan I have ever heard. It had the air of a pshaw, sputter, and the shocked exclamation of an offended old gentleman. Had he been wearing a monocle, it would have definitely popped.
Contra explained that he wasn't accusing him, but asking him if he had seen anything. Dante rose, crossed the room with a hurumph, and laid down at my feet turning his back to that slanderous insinuator.
*The thief is definitely Muppet. I caught him the other day taking a nap with his nose thrust deeply into the interior of said slipper, sound asleep. Currently, he is acting very nonchalant about the whole thing. At least he isn't chewing them.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Zsa Zsa, as you probably know, is just a super good dog. She's gentle and nice and accommodating and well behaved and just all around reliable and trustworthy. Flossy is getting there, but has a ways to go; and Buddy just gets more demanding as time goes on. (Partly but not totally his fault. He is spoiled, but he also has medical things like he has to take a lot of pills, he can't hear, and he's having a harder time getting around these days.)
So we end up spending tons of time and energy tending to the other dogs, and poor sweet Zsa Zsa ends up making accommodations for them. But it is totally unfair to her, so a while back, I started taking her on special dates. Every Thursday, she gets her own walk where she can go at her own speed and greet people and other dogs and stuff, and just generally not be bogged down by Buddy.* And once a month, we also go out to a local burger chain that makes ice cream sundaes for dogs, so she gets a mini cheeseburger and a sundae (vanilla frozen custard with dog treats and peanut butter sauce) and THEN we go to the park for a longish walk. It is her favorite day ever.
I guess I can understand why she knows it's her walk day, because she can tell it's Thursday. But somehow, she also seems to know when it's ice cream day, too, which only happens once a month, and has only been going on for a few months so far.
But she totally knows, and just waits and watches all day for me to be ready to go. So like today, I just said, "Hey, Zsa Zsa," which I must say at least ten times a day, but she bolts up and starts doing this backward run-dancing she does when she is super happy, then heads right for the car door instead of doing her normal walk thing. She knows.
* Buddy gets four pretty short walks every day, most with Zsa Zsa; and Flossy gets one longer one, but we still can't walk the ladies together, because Flossy still gets extra wild and excited when Zsa Zsa is with her.

Aww Zsa Zsa! How cool that they make ice cream treats for the doggies.
Since we lost Duck, Lana goes to my mom's on days when Hubby and I both work. She gets really excited when Hubby is ready to leave and stands at the door. If I tell her she is staying home with me that day or whatever she looks really bummed out for a few minutes and hurts my fee-fees

You know your dog is spoiled rotten to the core when she is lying upside down on the couch with a pillow and blanket and gets indignant when you want to take her picture and looks at you like this.

Tasha's scabs have all fallen off and his toenails are almost grown back in. He has a cool Joaquin Phoenix scar on his upper lip now. It's pretty bad ass. It ages him a lot, he looks like a tough little man now but he still tries to nurse off our necks like a babby.

Kiddo does the R.E.A.D. program at our library. He could read to the dog at home, but he likes the library and the Librarians absolutely adore him so it's just a fun afternoon, and anyway I looked up the program.
Quote:
The Reading Education Assistance Dogs program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog. R.E.A.D. dogs are registered therapy animals that volunteer with their handler as a team, going to schools, libraries, and many other settings as reading companions for children. What a great program! So, you should support it or participate in it if you have excellent dogs.

The dog Kiddo was reading to yesterday, which actually for Kiddo is secondary to the human facilitator, kept looking at me (I was sitting a ways away to not be disturbing) and I would raise my eyebrows or make faces and he would wag his tail or smile at me. It was weird and funny.

That slideshow just about killed me. How do they manage to look so genuinely interested? That black greyhound with the blaze on his chest, the woolly Briard, that amazingly smart-faced merle Sheltie, even that tiny Papillon in the basket, they all look like they're reading along.

We have that here. It's called Tell-a-Tail. We regularly have a pibble named Zoe, a German Shepherd named Axel, a Pom and a Jack Russell whose names I don't know. One of our children's librarians brought her black lab Stella as well, but she was laid off so we don't get to see Stella anymore.

Okay one more. I love how there are Rotties and Bullies and Mastiffs in the programs, because these are dogs that many people fear. They are not only helping with literacy, they are ambassadors for their breeds.

I posted a pic of Zoe upthread somewhere. Here's a Facebook album of some. If you can't see them let me know, I can upload more.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
I forgot to update about the slipper shenanigans the following day. The puppetrator, who acted very cool and nonchalant about the whole thing at the time, must have felt remorse deep in his puppy soul. The next morning the missing slipper was carefully deposited back on the floor on the master's side of the bed as though it had been there all along.
Tonight I am marveling at the brilliant Dante again. We recently acquired a pair of club chairs and finally got rid of our old shabby sofa that the dogs were accustomed to taking over. You can imagine this lead to great unhappiness in the household. A trip to the drugstore for some cheap $5 pet beds was in order as a short term solution until I find or make nicer ones. Mr. Dante was not impressed by this development at all. I tried to fashion him another option from an old ottoman and his favorite quilt under his favorite window. That too was rejected. Two days of him being kind of achey and arthritic from stubbornly lying on the floor followed, but what could I do?
Dante decided to take matters into his own paws. Both Contra and I had totally forgotten that we had purchased a large plush pet bed when we first introduced Muppet and there was some difficulty in everyone finding a comfy place to sleep. That bed was spurned at the time and was stored in one of those space bags in the bottom of the front closet after a couple weeks.
Dante, however, DID remember and took it upon himself to liberate it from said closet if his humans were too stupid to do it for him. I came home in the evening and discovered a trail of plastic leading to Mr. Alighrrri, sound asleep in the middle of the front parlor enthroned on his new comfy bed.
For a moment, I swear I did not even recognize it or remember where it came from and briefly wondered if he had ordered it off amazon or something.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Okay so Kiddo walked in the door this evening and says "Mom! There's a kitten crying somewhere!" I went outside and heard it too, in the pitch black woods...so had no choice but to slog through the rainditch and break down vines, while looking for snakes, to get in the woods and find the kitten. Porch Kitty comes over and little kitten runs to her only to get growled at, and I was holding my phone for light, and had on flip flops and it had rained all day, and these are totally wild woods full of horrors and shit, and the kitty stayed just out of reach. So I said "We'll come back after dinner and I put on my boots". So Kiddo is all jazzed about his first animal rescue, and getting his hopes up of a new kitten, and suckering his grandma into helping us, and calling people about it. Then, when we went back the kitty had moved across the street to different woods... where I had not broken a trail. I was armed with tuna this time, and she came out p. quickly and I scruffed her and stuffed her in the carrier.
So we had her on the porch feeding her more tuna and stuff, and this car pulled up at the woods and I hear "kitty kitty!". So I yelled "Did you lose a kitten", they hadn't, but they had heard her on their dog walk and came back to rescue her. So kitty went home with cute 20 somethings and Kiddo was very disappointed. So we called lisapea and he feels a little better now. I am super proud of him for wanting to help
Here's the kitty
