Default Qatar Qrisis

Are y'all getting news about this, or is it only Al-Jazeera reporting it?

One or two*, make that several*, make that many* Middle Eastern countries appear to have cut diplomatic relations with Qatar - and stopped flights and blocked the land border and blocked their ports to Qatar ships and ships bound for Qatar - and are in the process of expelling Qatari citizens.

* Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Libya, the Maldives (wot?)

Qatar diplomatic crisis: All the latest updates | Qatar News | Al Jazeera

On Qatar's side: Iran. Iran is offering food deliveries replacing those currently blocked at the borders.

Seeking dialogue and calm: Kuwait and Turkey.

Fanning the flames: Israel. Trumpster.
Qatar row: Trump claims credit for isolation - BBC News

So what's going on? Qatar is accused of sponsoring terrorism (through and/or along with Iran). (But Saudi Arabia isn't? Must be the wrong kind of terrorism.)

Qatar-Gulf rift: The Iran factor | Qatar | Al Jazeera

Quote:
Saudi Arabia has claimed that Qatar is supporting "Iranian-backed terrorist groups" in the Saudi province of Qatif and in Bahrain, accusations that Doha called a "campaign of lies that have reached the point of complete fabrication".
The rest of this article is fairly Qatar-centric, portraying the current flare-up as part of a couple of decades of Saudi & UAE trying to squash Qatar's independence.

It’s Qatar v Saudi Arabia. But the west can’t afford to pick a side | Peter Salisbury | Opinion | The Guardian

Makes out that Qatar has been supporting and building relations with just about everyone - various terrorist groups, Iran, Israel, Britain, and the largest US base in the Middle East.

Qatar row: What's caused the fall-out between Gulf neighbours? - BBC News

Since Trump supports the pressure on Qatar, I am inclined to support Qatar, but they do seem a bit unpredictable and unrestrained (wait ... like Trumpster). I'm sure some of you have more in-depth knowledge.

Wrong kind of terrorists, exactly. Qatar is pro-Muslim Brotherhood, including Hamas. There are other things going on, like this: "Forget Terrorism": The Real Reason Behind The Qatar Crisis Is Natural Gas | Zero Hedge

And this:
Quote:
There’s a lot going on beneath the surface of this startling power play. For many years, Qatar has aggravated some of its larger Gulf neighbors, who blame Al-Jazeera, a TV network directed by the Qatari state, for enflaming the Arab Spring that presented a direct challenge to their governments. Egypt has accused al Jazeera of “inciting terrorism,” and the network has been blocked from broadcast in all these countries for the past two weeks. Both the UAE’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed and the Egyptian government blame Qatar for its support for the Muslim Brotherhood inside their countries.
Most importantly, the Saudis—and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, in particular—take a much harder-line approach than Saudi governments of the past to Qatar’s more nuanced relations with Iran, the Saudis’ great rival. The message to Qatar’s leaders is simple: “Fall in line or we will bury you.” They hope either to force Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad to abandon the independence of his foreign policy or to create conditions for a coup inside the emirate to remove him from power.

Technically they're not sinking, it's the ocean that's rising. That's a flaw in Trump's plan though, he may have to rejoin the cilmate treaty. :blank:

Those are shi'ite regions btw. Bahrain's population is majority shi'ite but the royal family are sunni. The 'Arab spring' there was brutally suppressed, mostly by Saudi troops.
And east Saudi Arabia has areas that are mostly shi'ite too, there have been protests and there have been attacks on police by gunmen (vice versa). Neither of it has much to do with Iran, apart from the fact they are Twelver shi'ites like the Iranians.

And in Syria meanwhile:
Quote:
Should the rebels- demoralized and fatigued by the pitiful infighting taking over East Ghouta between Qatar-backed Faylaq ar-Rahman and Saudi-backed Jaish al-Islam – agree to hand over Harasta to the Syrian Arab Army, the Damascus-Homs Highway will be completely secured again and re-opened for the first time in over three years.

It remains unknown whether the recent Saudi-Qatari diplomatic split has anything to do with the ongoing Ghouta crisis. However, it is important to note that Harasta is predominantly held by Ahrar al-Sham and represents the faction’s main Damascus stronghold. The rebel group is believed to have extensive ties to Qatar and its regional ally Turkey which have for long sponsored Muslim Brotherhood affiliated groups like Faylaq ar-Rahman inside the war torn country.

Ahrar al-Sham giving up control of Harasta in favor of the Syrian government is Jaish al-Islam’s biggest nightmare as it would entail setting the city of Douma (Jaish al-Islam’s largest stronghold in Syria) up for full virtual siege within Eastern Ghouta totally crippling the Saudi-aligned faction that is already struggling to keep its eastern fronts together against the non-stop barrage of government assaults near Nashabiya and Hawsh al-Dawahira amidst the brutal infighting taking place in the central Ghouta towns of Hawsh al-Ash’ari and Erbeen.
Battle-weary rebels vie for reconciliation near the Syrian capital

What has changed in the Gulf to precipitate a crisis now? The answer is that the Trump wrecking ball passed through the region last month and the US President’s unreserved backing for Saudi Arabia, and in particularly for deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has disturbed the regional balance of forces. It has already emboldened the Sunni monarchy in Bahrain to crush the last Shia resistance to its dominance, killing five protesters in one village and closing down the only remaining independent newspaper.

I just found this article, I already had the same thought as the headline, so I wanted to find out why he (David Hearst) thought it was.

Why the campaign against Qatar is doomed | Middle East Eye

Quote:
Three regional blocks are vying for control.

The first is led by Iran - its state actors like Iraq, Syria, and non-state ones, the Shia militias in Iraq, Hezbollah, the Houthis.

The second is the ancien regime of absolute Gulf monarchs: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and they include Jordan and Egypt.

The third block is led by Turkey, Qatar, the Muslim Brotherhood and the forces instrumental in the Arab Spring.

In this three-way fight, America’s allies are just as destabilising to regional order as America’s foes, and the campaign launched against Qatar is a prime example of this.
Anyway, so yeah, Qatar has allies, primarily Turkey. It is also not as hostile to the first group of states, and they will never join a boycott led by the ancien regimes. And plus, as he also points out:

Quote:
Qatar is not Gaza. It’s got friends with powerful armies - a country with a population smaller than Houston has got a sovereign wealth fund worth $335bn.
And it has this about Trump's role...

Quote:
The two game changers for Saudi Arabia’s campaign against Qatar are the Turkish parliament’s decision to fast track legislation allowing Turkish troops to be deployed at a base in Qatar, and the statement by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps accusing Saudi Arabia of responsibility for the attack on the Iranian parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in which 12 died.

This leaves Saudi Arabia isolated. It can bully a smaller nation, but it cannot defend its own country without substantial amounts of foreign military support.

Whatever their commander-in-chief may tweet, the US military in the Gulf is trying very hard to avoid having to provide it. Which is possibly one reason why the White House and the Pentagon have been saying different things about Qatar this week.

Shortly after Qatar’s land border with Saudi was closed at dawn on 5 June, the Pentagon lauded Qatar’s “enduring commitment to regional security”.

It said pointedly about al Udeid airbase, which is the forward base of US Air Forces Central Command, that “all flights continue as planned”. Some 10,000 US troops are based there.

Then came Trump’s tweets, which essentially claimed ownership of the extraordinary moves against Qatar, by saying they were the fruits of the address he made in Riyadh before 50 Arab and Muslim leaders. And then came a second Pentagon statement, renewing praise of Qatar for hosting US forces.

The Pentagon was joined by Europe, or least the foreign minister of its most important state, Germany. Sigmar Gabriel said: “Apparently, Qatar is to be isolated more or less completely and hit existentially. Such a Trumpization of treatment is particularly dangerous in a region already plagued by crisis.”

Soon after the Turkish decision, Trump was on the phone to the Emir of Qatar offering mediation; 24 hours after his tweet, it seemed the message from his military had gotten through to him.

Trumpization :giggles:
