I lost! Don't ask me how, after a week of drinking tons of beer (the water in El Salvador isn't really safe), but I lost! :flowerdance:

You're stopping each one of your wees for two bike rides? :stunned:

I'm hoping to keep going in 2012 with the weight loss I started about 8 months ago. So far I've dropped 57 pounds and counting. I think I have about another 35 to go and then I'll be happy to maintain at about 195lbs.

This is the least I've weighed since university when I was playing tennis everyday. :cheer:
Just over a month later and I've lost another 6 pounds. We had a week where we went out for various functions 5 days out of 7. Took over a week to recover from that :giggle: So very happy with another 6 pounds.

I'm heading back to Canada in about a week and no one there has seen me since I started losing weight. Many of them won't even know until they see me, so hoping for at least a few shocked faces. Not why I'm doing it of course, but a little positive reinforcement never hurts :)

You guys remember how I used to be a giant fat man over 300 pounds, yeah, not anymore.

2 weeks ago I got under 300 and have stayed under. Hopefully that continues tomorrow.

Yay weight watchers, crossfit and running with my :beloved:

So, apparently the Tough Mudder marathon is coming to a City Near Me in October... I actually am really interested, it would be a fun challenge and give me a specific goal to work toward over the Summer, but I'm not sure I can come up with the entry fee, which is over $100...

Oooh, I would love to try that one. So far we have only participated in short ones (5k only) which seem to be way more focused on the theme, photo ops, and partying but which aren't overly challenging. But, yeah the tough ones don't come by very often and they are indeed pricy. :spend:

Hope you go anyway!

Enormous fun!

Yesterday I just started being able to criss cross my feet, stepping one over the other back and forth while skating. I'm setting up to try some slalom course skating.

:sadbye:

After 15 months at Crossfit, our gym shut down last week. :sigh: The owner/trainer is moving with his wife to Alabama because she got into grad school in Birmingham. I love for them that they're moving on to bigger and better things, but personally I'm devastated. That gym has been a huge part of our lives and recovery for a long time.

We got together with the other members and brainstormed ideas of what to do next. A few of them have switched to Crossfit gyms in other parts of town, but the hours didn't work for our busy schedules. We live pretty far away from everybody else (they're all in the city that we commute to every day) and we just couldn't make it work.

Instead! We bought a bunch of equipment on closeout from our gym and we're setting up shop in the garage. We figure we have each other and fifteen solid months of excellent training and we're going to strike out on our own. We spent about the same amount that another semester of gym membership would have cost, so pretty fair trade-off I think.

Check out the monster rack!

So fuckin' butch.

Holy crap. I thought the first picture was your garage, and thought you should turn that into a gym.

I'm going to go Zumba on Thursday nights. I don't know how much bike commuting I'll be able to do this term. One day at least, the others I haven't worked out routes for, plus I'll have to carry more stuff. Lab coats and what not.

Yeah, I wish. The same rack is in both pictures, to give you an idea of scale.

So this morning after our workout, I weighed in at 289.6 I haven't been below 290 in I don't know how long, it has been years. Certainly before I met ES. I am almost below 200 in base twelve, only a couple more pounds to go for that.

Since I started weight watchers at the end of october, I have lost 37.4 pounds, pretty fucking cool.

*Whew*! Just got back from a run.

My strength is good, but my endurance is lousy. My problem is that I have the physiology of a sprinter, not an endurance runner. There's a limit to what I can do about that, since the ratio of fast-twitch muscle fibers to slow-twitch muscle fibers is genetically determined. And I've always been a far better sprinter than endurance runner.

I can hike for miles and miles on steep, rocky mountain trails while carrying a heavy backpack, but that's because such exertion doesn't come close to bringing me to my anaerobic threshold.

At the gym, I can do the maximum weight on all the leg exercisers. (I've gotta admit that it's kind of gratifying to see some big muscly guy set the leg press machine to 300 pounds, then, with much grunting and groaning finally get it up. After doing 10 reps, he'll stagger off, complaining about how much his legs are burning. Then I'll calmly set the machine for 410 pounds -- the maximum -- and do 20 reps.)

So it's not a lack of leg strength. But I can only run at speed for about a mile, maybe 1.5 miles if I push myself. And that's ... well ... pathetic. Just a few years ago, I'd have considered a 1.5 mile run on flat ground to be a mere warm-up, and I thought nothing of 3-mile runs in the mountains of Idaho.

So, one of my goals for the Summer is to drastically improve my endurance.

Because of this injury, I hurt the knee even more just two days later on April 1st. I stepped off a step that was taller than I thought it was. I walked with a cane for a couple of weeks. Treated it with ice, Ibuprofen, and rest as much as possible. Got an MRI, which showed only that I had a bone bruise on my femur, no tears in the meniscus. Also, I sprained the IT band and MCL ligaments in the process. I am just now getting to where I walk without much of a limp. I know I'm getting better now though, my heel spurs are beginning to hurt again.

Did not know where to deposit this story, but I will shoehorn it into this thread, hoping perhaps to catch the attention of TLR. This is about specific pollutants in relation to weight. It is brand new info to me, although I am broadly aware of the often poorly understood effects of synthetic trace materials. I found it very interesting. The article is compact and concise, not TLDR at all.

Does This Pollution Make Me Look Fat? | Mother Jones

Quote:
Enter another fascinating conversation to the mix: Researchers at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health recently published findings that pregnant women exposed to higher levels of PAHs (chemicals released into the air from the burning of coal, diesel, oil, gas and tobacco) more than doubled their risk of bearing children who would be obese by the age of 7. The correlation was consistent with the findings from experiments in mice, in which researchers discovered that exposure to PAHs resulted in increased fat mass. Not only did mice feel the bulge, but cell culture studies also revealed that exposure to PAHs limited fat cells' ability to normally dispel lipids. The Columbia study is one of the first to show that obesity in humans isn't only affected by what you eat—it's also what you breathe in the air around you.

It is much much better now, probably 90% healed. And speaking of heeled, it's not the Plantar fascia that's bothering me now, it's the Achilles tendon.

My schedule isn't going to magically rearrange itself, so if I'm going to go bike riding, I gotta make time for it. I just got back from a quick ride up and down the road (around 9 miles) and I'm kind of overheated but feeling okay.
