Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
'round these parts we might have said EBF, as in East Butt Fuck, as likely as having say BFE.
FWIW, Egypt, New York is not too awful far from me. Actually, it's closer to my folks, but still probably ~30 min drive.

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
I think I heard 'bumfuck, Iowa' a time or two growing up. Not really a common saying around here, though, this being Utah and uttering 'fuck' being sacrilege of the most unforgivable sort to most of the locals.

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
OK. According to The F Word, the 'Bumfuck' variant is the oldest of the three. It traces 'Bumfuck, Egypt' to 1972 and an unnamed U.S. Army Sgt. E-6 who apparently wrote somewhere: "They probably sent those records out to Bumfuck, Egypt." The next documented usage is from 1974, in Philip Kingry's The Monk and the Marine, page 31: "When they asked... whether he would... volunteer for Vietnam, he said he would volunteer for Bumfuk, Egypt first!"
Military origin sounds plausible to me, as soldiers are more likely than average folks to find themselves dispatched to some godforsaken location or another.

Until reading it here, I had never heard of the "BFE" variant. I'd heard "Bumfuck, Idaho".

I've not been acquainted with the term, either. I have heard "Outer Mongolia" used in the same way.

It's bum fuck, bum as in bad, like a bum leg. I always euphemismized this as Bad Lay, Egypt.

Or Iowa, as godfry said. I think I was about 12 when I first heard it, and then went looking for it in an atlas.

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
I just asked my east-coast raised significant other where Bumfuck is and he also said Egypt. Clearly, this should be a poll.
(somebody else should do it, though. I'm lazy.)

Hey, that's a good idea. I was thinking of doing that originally, but couldn't think of a way to organize it. I think your post has given me inspiration.

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
I already tried to do it and flubbed it. I should have done that to begin with.

I'm afraid you norms can't add polls to extant threads. That's one of our extra-special superadmin powers.

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
I was thinking about this expression the other day, googled it and this site came up. Basically this expression cracks me up...
I have been hearing this expression since the early seventies in the Northern Virginia area and even as far away as Barrow Alaska. I have NEVER heard it as Buttfuck Egypt...always as Bumfuck Egypt with Bumfuck refering to some out of the way, desolate, not-very-nice place where you DON'T want to be...It has never had any reference to fucking butts or bums....

Re: Etymology of Anally Adventurous Alexandrians.
I can't really say exactly when I first heard the term. Sometime back in the 70's or 80's, I guess. Much of those years are kinda a blur to me now though. I spent those years in Ga and Va, so there's another southern locale for you.
I've also heard a few variants, such as East Bumfuck.

I've never heard the term BFE over in the North East of England, although the term 'stranded in the Sahara' is used a lot.
