"freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order."
- Justice Robert Jackson, West Virginia State Board of Ed. v. Barnette
Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said on Wednesday that the Supreme Court decision that upheld slavery “remains to this day the law of the land.”
Huckabee appeared on conservative radio host Michael Medved’s show to defend Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who went to jail for contempt of court after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. The former governor compared the Supreme Court’s recent decision to legalize same sex marriage to the Dred Scott decision, which upheld slavery.
“Michael, the Dred Scott decision of 1857 still remains to this day the law of the land which says that black people aren’t fully human,” he told the radio host. “Does anybody still follow the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision?”

The headline's a little misleading since Cruz's statements show he knows that impeachment and removal of Supreme Court justices is in fact possible. The real gem there is Cruz's idea that we should have nationwide retention elections for Supreme Court justices every eight years.
I'm not so sure I like the idea of some foreign usurper wannabe having natural-born affinity with an enemy nation suggesting radical changes to the government of MY COUNTRY.

On the Today programme the same morning the increasingly flappable prime minister, David William Donald Cameron, pigheadedly refused to distance himself from the comment.
I'm pretty sure that my soul briefly left my body right here when I realized that, from now on, anyone can just call Cameron 'pigheaded' with plausible deniability because hey, it just means stubborn, and he is a pretty stubborn kind of guy as I take it.
Forever. That toothpaste is out of the tube, and it is never going back in.
Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are.
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are.
And when your hand is on your heart,
You're nearly a good laugh,
Almost a joker,
With your head down in the pig bin,
Saying "Keep on digging."
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find?
When you're down in the pig mine.
You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.
They have a brutal dictatorship and food insecurity, so it's a biting sociopolitical commentary, or something. Ignore the fact that it is a completely cliche racist Asian joke in every other way and doesn't mention any of those things and how you could make a (still unfunny) "joke" about how North Koreans are starving without referencing dogs...
Haha, Heartland calls the Pope an animist for his views on global warming. Surprised they drew the line at "Animist!" instead of going straight to antichrist.
Quote:
“There are elements of nature worship, and I would say that contrary to some of the criticism, that this is not communism that has entered the church, it is rather paganism,” Gene Koprowski, marketing director for the Heartland Institute warned a collection of reporters.
“I think that if we have a pope who doesn’t keep things in an orthodox manner, we’re gonna be having forms returning to the religion that are not orthodox,” he added. “I think we are seeing a revelation of a sort of animistic form in the church.”
