I apologize for the inaccurate use of the word "philanthropist" in that headline.

Couldn't happen to a, etc.

Nelson Mandela, also the first black president of his country, also died at the age of 95. I struggle to think of many other similarities.

First concert ever, back in '78, was Eddie Money opening for some douchehole who shall remain nameless... In hindsight I should have chosen to go to Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow instead, but it was Eddie Money. RIP sir. :sadcheer:

Aw man, A Texas Trip! I forgot about this gem... What a line-up -- Fitch, Daniel Johnston, Stickmen with Rayguns, Butthole Surfers! At one time I had both the vinyl and the cassette of this, but who knows what happened to them? 1986-1992 was a long drunken psychotropic trainwreck, not unlike A Texas Trip. I'm lucky to be alive.

"I heard the voice of Satan, crying in the woods."
- Daniel Johnston
This version is very different than most other versions of this song, which is usually just him reciting the lyrics while doing his signature up/down strum on an acoustic guitar. I suspect Paul Leary and/or Gibby Haynes had a hand in the production of this.

RIP Daniel Johnston :sadcheer:

This makes me sad, as I really liked what DS9 and Nog in particular brought to the Ferengi.

The Ferengi started out as a failed TNG concept and had been relegated to the trash bin of species. DS9 picked them up but really wasn’t sure what to do with them. Quark was the only slightly established character, with Rom being thuggish dumb Ferengi #1 and Nog being generic troublemaking kid. And not a troublemaking kid to the protagonist, but to a character piece of the protagonist. Since Jake Sisko was created for the purposes of allowing easy and deeper exploration of Sisko’s fathering and family life, Nog started out as a tool that would test Sisko through Jake. A lesser show and a lesser actor would have left it at that but Nog grew into his own full individual character and not always a likable one either.

Nog goes from annoying kid to admirer of the federation and watches the command staff come back time and time again as heros so he joins starfleet, has a rocky time but makes it and becomes the first Ferengi in starfleet. With his new found pride he enjoys playing soldier right up until he ends up in a real battle in a real war and loses his leg defending some tech junk and everything changes the war damaged PTSD Nog of later seasons is deep and nuanced wanting to escape reality back to the days where everyone seemed invincible and heroic.

Ah, shit. 50 is insanely young, and Nog was one of the best characters in the Star Trek universe.

The Treachery, Faith and the Great River episode of DS9 was a personal favorite. Trying to procure a graviton stabilizer for O'Brien, Nog engages in a series of increasingly crazy looking financial maneuvers. When it appears as though all is lost, the Great Material Continuum comes through and Nog pulls everything together at the end.

That's the same episode in which Nog utters the epic Ferengi Rule of Acquisition No. 168, "Whisper your way to success."

Grateful Dead Lyricist Robert Hunter Dead at 78 :sadcheer::gd::sadcheer:

Quote:
...Over the years, Hunter penned the words to Dead classics like “Ripple,” “Box of Rain,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Dark Star,” and “Touch of Grey.” His lyrical contributions to the Dead were often considered the group’s soul. When the Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Hunter was included, the only non-performer ever honored as a band member. Later, in 2015, Hunter was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Beyond writing for the Dead, Hunter released several solo records and poetry volumes. He also held a notable creative partnership with Bob Dylan, co-writing songs on 1988’s Down in the Groove, 2009’s Together Through Life, and 2012’s Tempest. In addition, Hunter wrote songs for Elvis Costello, Jim Lauderdale, and Bruce Hornsby, including “Take You There (Misty)” off this year’s Absolute Zero.
