This is the same logic by which they cut benefits to people in social housing who have a room more than they absolutely need (the "bedroom tax"), when there is no accommodation available with fewer rooms.

Coincidentally, "Marketplace Money" is on NPR right now. I understand and appreciate that lots of people need money-management advice, but I really loathe these sorts of programs for two reasons.

First, most of the people whom they talk with have "problems" that I can't relate to. "Oh, I've got an extra $100,000 lying around, and I don't know what to do with it." They act like these people and their alleged problems are somehow representative.

Second, there's a whole lot of subtle (and not-so-subtle) blaming of the poor. For instance they were just going on about how 2/3 of Americans aren't saving enough for retirement, and how disgraceful that is. I wanted to reach into the radio and shake them and say, "Look, you idiots, when you're working two jobs and still not earning enough to pay for rent, transportation, and food -- your problem is not that you're lazy and irresponsible, and you don't have spare money lying around that can go into savings; heck, you're lucky if you have a savings account at all."

Right now, one of the commenters is blathering about how you should be putting aside 30 - 40% of your earnings for retirement. Yeah, that's a realistic goal for Joe Sixpack.

Of course they are going to kiss up to the top 1%, they have more money to contribute and keep NPR going. On our local PBS station it seems like every other month they have a 2 week beg-a-thon. I supported them for years till they started dropping most of the educational programming and the Pledge-Specials were totally different than regular programming, in fact that is how I know there is a beg-a-thon, I see the beg-a-thon specials in the TV listings.

Every financial advisor I've met with wants to put away 30-40% of my earnings for retirement. Just not in my accounts. Broker is the most apt term ever developed.

Perhaps it should be clarified, whose retirement are they putting away for?

Eliminate the poors and their ilk, or at least sterilize them after you've herded them into concentration camps, was the attitude of the real death panels in the 20th century. The did not see a problem with public gas chambers as a final solution to the social scum problem.

That is the world that today's Republican party wants to return to.

Failing that, seems to me the fall back position is just letting the poors starve. That's what's feeding the gun buying frenzy. Well, that and fear of Obama's highly effective gun control personal firearms reduction bans and confiscations.

The theory: End transfer payments to the poors, they will riot. In response to the riot, cut off water and logistics routes into poors heavy areas. Shoot whoever manages to escape the high poors densities because they will be out to ravage the countryside. This is what they are referring to when they speak of a zombeh apocalypse.

That's sort of the impression I get when I talk to lolbert internet arguing contingents.

McResources website has shut down after their latest idiocy: save money and your health by not buying fast food. No, instead, save those fast food coupons for Boxing Day, give them to your household staff and chauffeur.

Soon all will be working for government, then everyone will get a 10% raise every year!!

... but wait, where will government get the money .. print it?

Maybe government should allocate jobs to people then compensate them based upon the size of the voting block. This seems the fairest. It is democracy!!

Default Re: Fuck the Poors

This is primarily a Straw Man, wherein the rhetorician sets up an argument that only superficially resembles the views of the opponents, differing in ways usually intentionally chosen to make the argument weaker. Attacking this new, fabricated, weaker position will be, the perpetrator hopes, viewed by the audience as a successful attack on the actual positions held by the opponent.

There is also a dash of a particular rhetorical tactic whose official label, if it has one, I am not familiar with. It is similar to reduction to absurdity, only instead of actually stating what would result in the absurdity, the position itself is simply stated with an attitude of absurdity, as though both the fact of and the reason for the absurdity is obvious and unquestionable. This particular use is intensely amusing to me, since the statement meant to seem absurd on the face of it (10% raise every year) is exactly the kind of absurdity that Capitalism relies on; only instead of wages growing indefinitely and without limit, it's wealth, profits, and productivity! But obviously expecting wages to keep up with the same growth expected in every other aspect of the economy is just absurd! Silly liberals, perpetual growth in wealth and productivity is for owners, not peasants…
