I briefly owned one of these. It was a dream to drive but a bitch to maintain.

Love them old Scouts. I passed one of these Internationals off to my nephew. My Dad and Granddad bought a brand new 1948 Farm-All B. I ended up with it and thought what the Hell am I going to do with a tractor?

Use it for parts on your Scout!

That's a nice-looking piece of machinery to anybody with an appreciable chunk of land. Like a pair of mules....

My first car:

1969 Toyota Corona Mk II station wagon. It had a 'University of Poland' decal across the bottom of the rear window and didn't have the fancy roof rack.

It died an ignominious death in the grill of the three-quarter ton pickup after being t-boned at 30 mph on the passenger side. Still, I drove it to the scrap yard after I'd recovered from the trauma.

Mine was a 1963 Ford Galaxie 4 door with a 223 inline six and a two speed automatic transmission. I got it in 1972 from my Grandmother who abused the hell out of it. I still have the grill ornament from that car proudly displayed in my garage.

My dad bought one of these back in the 70s. He had until he died a couple of years ago. It was great for camping or just day trips on the desert. I swear we took that up grades where the flies were falling off the rocks.

Oh, yeah...I remember all the Ford Galaxies...but, at the time, I seem to remember that practically every other car was one of these:

The Chevrolet Impala...this particular one a 1963 model.

That's better than a "wet willy", I think.

My dad's car didn't have the tow rope on the front bumper. It had a tow bar so it could be hitched up to the truck for long hauls. We would get to the general area where we were going to go "jeeping", park the truck and unhitch the jeep. Then it was off over hill and over dale and hit the dusty trail (he lived in Arizona). Those were good times. My uncles; Dave, Ralph and George all had Willys jeeps of similar vintage and they would get together, along with their wives, and take lengthy off-road jeep trips in various areas of Arizona.

Oooh tractors!

My favourite is the Field Marshall single cylinder diesel.

They were made from 1945 to 1957. There was an earlier 'Marshall' - still a two-cycle single cylinder diesel but with an 8-inch bore and 10-inch stroke - that's 503 cubic inches! By 1945 the engine was a bit smaller capacity but higher revving. The starting procedure was a bit strange - a smouldering paper was screwed into the cylinder head and then the motor was cranked by hand. An alternate method of cranking the engine is to fit a blank shot gun cartridge into a special cartridge holder on the intake manifold and detonate it using a hammer - this cartridge method is not favoured by proud owners though as it causes wear and potential damage to the engine.

You guys had cool first cars.
Mine was an '85 Pontiac 6000 LE. Dark blue. I inherited it in '95, and by then the paint had boiled off in the Georgia sun, the A/C no longer worked, the radio was dubious, and the hubcaps had a habit of not stopping when the rest of the car did. Nothing brings on confidence like parking your car and running off to retrieve a hubcap for the fourth time in a week.

I had one of those for a brief period of time. It was a challenge in the Michigan winters. The thing had a habit of locking up the rear breaks and swapping ends in the icy conditions. It was pretty scary.

I had the misfortune of driving it during an ice storm once. It did indeed decide to swap ends. Can confirm, would never drive another Pontiac post 1980 model. Not that I could find new ones anymore anyways..

1990...

What we owned:

1969 VW van that had dents and rust, no front bumper and no seats other than the front two. It was my wife's rig and she loved it, but we couldn't rely on it to get us to and from the beach...

and

A 1986 Ford Thunderbird. A gift from my mother-in-law. Long story...I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I sold it to gypsies for cash on the barrelhead.

What I wanted at the time:

What we got:

A 1990 Toyota Corolla All-Track wagon. Ours was navy blue metallic with black highlights....a stealth vehicle. It was the only new car I've ever purchased. I was reasonably happy with it, but considered it 'cramped'. I used the All-Trak feature exactly twice in the nine years. I sold it nine years later for a two-year old Toyota van. The All-Trak had a little over 60K on the odometer at the time. Based upon reports from Cherokee owners, I'm really glad I couldn't afford such a thing at the time.

When I was teen my dad restored a 1969 Buick Wildcat. Looked exactly like this one, even the colour:

It was like a tank, heavy, solid and guzzled gas by the gallon. But it drove like a dream and had more power than any teen should ever be allowed to control.
