I rather understood that organized athletics were originally organized to promote healthier lifestyles, not initiate a new means of economic activity and erect an entire culture of entitlements. I don't care for the money grubbing in professional sports; I care even less so in 'amateur' sports...I don't think any of them should carry expectations of wealth, fame or special standing. They should be fun and engender healthier lifestyles.

Training for the Olympics and traveling to different competitions to be good enough for them is an expensive undertaking. Hell, even putting kids in a sport for fun and health is expensive....to the tune of hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year.
Additionally, competitions like the Olympics are extraordinarily expensive to put on...without commercial sponsors, and without athletes endorsing products before, during, and after competition nobody could or would foot that bill.
Most athletes know they wont get endorsement deals, or become famous, but why should the very best in the world not expect such recognition? How would kids know who those athletes are in order to be inspired to be healthy and play sports if they don't know who they are (because they are not famous nor on advertisements)?
Endorsements and advertising sell products in our consumer culture. You may not like that aspect of our culture, but I think it's silly to try to eliminate only athletes from participating.

Re: Checking my Privilege
The main focus of the article is fantastic and I think is the most important. She is graduating high school, the first in her family to do so, despite her heavy obligations in time and money for training and competing. That should be celebrated.
Many of her peers are working students I am sure. They get compensation for their work and have to make the same choice on whether to stick with school or drop out to support themselves and their families. Not working while going to school in that demographic is in itself a luxury, and she is working much harder and taking more risk than a kid with a job at the corner store. Beyond that she is college bound, which is even rarer for someone in her situation who does not compete in a NCAA sport. Serious congratulations to her for finishing school and for going on academically. It will take time away from her training at an age when she is in her prime. That is a tough choice, will be a challenging balancing act, and I think she is a hell of a role model.
Beyond that though, this young woman is a business owner. She is her own business and brand. If she wants to fire her manager, because he is not doing his job to her satisfaction, that is her choice FFS. It sounds like her new manager is a professional with serious clients and good ideas who will get better results for her. It is an intelligent decision for her to make. I have to wonder if some of the underlying discomfort is the result of a young black woman having the power and choice in hiring and firing a manager like that.
I say, good for her and more power to her.

Re: Checking my Privilege
Did she even think about how many private school tuitions, nannies, and luxury car notes her previous manager has to pay before she went and fired him?!

This is Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball and other critiques of the Zeitgeist, talking to Princeton. I feel it belongs on several levels in this thread.

Re: Checking my Privilege
It might be my thing, too. I just spent at least 30 minutes looking for a post I KNOW someone made. Only to forget why I was searching for it in the first fucking place.
RIP my friend Dingfod. Formerly Warrenly. I remember you fondly and miss seeing you here.
