Only in Kansas...
Kansas now has a Democratic Governor and a new Democratic Representative.
It still does not make the state progressive, but the medical marijuana movement is gaining strength, considering all the surrounding states already have medical marijuana or, in the case of Colorado, recreational marijuana.

Chasing twisters are you? Drifting north into Kansas?
It's encouraging to hear that Kansas has shaken that ugly and debilitating Brownback addiction. It was like the entire state was losing teeth and gaining skin lesions.
It sounds to me as though vacationing in neighboring Colorado could become a premiere free-time attraction for Kansans, sucking large amounts of their disposable income to support education and enlightenment in Colorado.

Re: Only in Kansas...
This past summer we moved to my old hometown. I was born in the small hospital two blocks from our house. Our house in Oklahoma sold in three days, the new owners wanted to take possession in 30 days. We were not ready for that. We moved all our furnishings into storage for about a month, and we lived in a vacation rental house while I worked on demolition of the moldy basement wood and pet stained carpet and pad.
ETA: We paid $22k for the house and have no mortgage, which allows us to live on about 80% Social Security.

Re: Only in Kansas...
I drive through Kansas regularly. Several of my customers are in KC MO, and I'd much rather drive than take a plane unless I have to be there on very short notice.
Also, visiting family back east, it was always easiest to head to KC, and from there go wherever.
The problem we used to have with Kansas was finding Coffee.
A fellow once told me that the settlers in Kansas brought five pounds of coffee, and five pounds of Bacon, and they have yet to use up either.
Kansas coffee always reminded me of an old Coors Light joke about a Canoe.
It has gotten better. There are a couple of StarBucks along I-70, and Mcdonalds has actually improved their basic Coffee to something useful.
And driving across I-70 is as close to autopilot as you can get. Traffic is seldom heavy enough to use more than 5% of your processing power to navigate. Just trip the Speed control to 75, sit back, turn on some tunes, and go.

Naw, man, it's like the closest you can get to sleepwalking behind the wheel of a car. At least from Goodland to Topeka, anyway.

By the way you guys talk it's like Kansas inspired adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.
Either that or everything between the Dakotas and eastern Montana.

Re: Only in Kansas...
i was always glad to get to that landmark point at which you could climb a three storey tower and see three or four states via telescopes. By then you could see mountains off in the distance. Have i mentioned how much i hate Western Kansas (despite four years of wheat harvest experience at the the edge of the flat Earth)?

The Wonder Tower?
They say six states, but they say a lot of things.
(It's actually been closed for a while, but supposedly it's reopening some day.)

That used to be an interesting place to stop. All the old do-dads and shit that was, at one time, quite useful.
First time I stopped there was back in my Trucking days. My first view of the Rockies, after two days driving from KC. (not long after Tricky Dick declared the Speed limit to be 55 mph. The Smokies Loved writing truckers up.)

Just to show off my excellent skills at Pedantry, I must point out - That happened in Missouri.

Re: Only in Kansas...
Your non-compliance has been noted and reported to the authorities.
Here is a fair use sized portion of the article:
Quote:
Two bills introduced in the Kansas House on Wednesday generate funding for human trafficking programs by requiring all new internet-capable telephones or computers sold in the state to feature anti-pornography software and by mandating adult entertainment businesses charge a special admissions tax.
Sabetha Rep. Randy Garber sponsored legislation requiring the software installations and dictating purchasers would have to pay a $20 fee to the state, and whatever cost was assessed by retail stores, to remove filters for “obscene” material. No one under 18 would be allowed to have filter software deleted.
“It’s to protect children,” Garber, a Republican, said in an interview. “What it would do is any X-rated pornography stuff would be filtered. It would be on all purchases going forward. Why wouldn’t anybody like this?”
|
And here is the bill.
I think it would be pretty great if Randy Garber had to actually provide technical specifications for how this system would be implemented. It sounds like it would require all internet-enabled devices to be pretty locked down.

Them EU rules things. A lotta foreign local publications just shrug and block the EU rather than try to be compliant. A little Brexit should clear that right up. Maybe.

Re: Only in Kansas...
That porn filter thing might be the best thing to ever happen to cell phone shops in Kansas City (Missouri).

Or they could head this way where we also have the jazz musicians' cigarettes.
Anyways, it always bugs me when lawmakers who don't know what they're talking about come up with technical legislation that would be impossible or near impossible to implement.
